Dog Grooming Tools question by KelsandDane: need advice on tools for grooming dog nails?
I want your opinion on different tools to clip my dane’s nails…. i have tried some manual, and want suggestions on the electric grinders…. plus’s/minuses? brands, sites/stores?
She is very large and hard to restrain and hates her paws being touched(makes it very hard because she 100+lbs), the clippers seem to hurt because they squeeze and break the nail
Thanks for all your help!

Dremmel…not only good for dog’s nails but useful for many purposes. I still clip my dogs (and all the dogs that I groom) with regular clippers and I see no purpose for my business to do otherwise.
It’s harder to get a dog used to an electric grinder than clippers (since in my business, I don’t have the time to train each one)….
Also, try an emery board after clipping….same effect…Or an emery board daily….then you don’t have to worry about clipping

Pet Zoom Review – Some Crucial Information

mydoghelp.com Grooming and brushing a dog is not quite as simple as it sounds. If you think you can use any of the several types of brushes available to groom and brush your dog, you will be so wrong. Each of the grooming tools available in the market is meant for a specific use, and a good understanding about the specific application is necessary to make grooming easier for you. Professional dog groomers have the expertise to look after your dog in a better way than you can manage. The expert dog groomers would use slicker brushes to remove mats and tangles from the dog’s fur for all types of coats. A slicker brush would remove dead hairs from the undercoat and = coarser hairs from the outer coat of the dog’s fur.

Difference between Cat Grooming & Dog Grooming

Cats have been domesticated since the times of the Pharos of Egypt. They believed themselves to be the first enthusiasts to bathe cats. The grooming and domestication has not made the cats incapable of grooming themselves properly.

Pet grooming is very important for its fur as it aids in getting rid of the undercoat, prevents hairballs, prevents parasitic infection and improves circulation. Different breeds need different types of grooming. Some need combing and brushing daily some need it less often. Most cats groom themselves and spend the considerable amount of day grooming themselves. You need to check the ears, eyes, mouth, nails and feet when you groom your cat. It is the perfect opportunity to check it over for lumps and bumps. Part the hair and check the skin for any problem such as fleas, sore or inflamed areas that require serious attention. For any serious cat illness consult a vet.

Use a short toothed comb to remove the dead hair of your cat. Some cats with short hair have delicate coats and skin so you need to be cautious while you use these combs and brushes that you are not damaging the cat. You can loosen the dead hair with your hands before you resort to using a brush or a comb on your cat. Run along your fingers through the fur in the direction opposite to which the hair grows. This also stimulates the natural oil of the skin and this keeps the fur shining and healthy too. Then you can use the pet grooming equipments that are best suited for your cat’s fur. You do not need to bathe your cat if it has been groomed well and completely. The natural oils in the cat fur will make it gleam. Bathing the cat could result into knots and mats, making the fur extremely unmanageable. If your cat has a specific skin complaint or is suffering from fleas then use a shampoo that is suitable for its skin. The cat shampoos are easier to rinse out and make less lather. Wet the coat completely before you use the shampoo.

Let us look at how you need to groom a dog that will make the differences evident.

As the fur is the most important for cat grooming, for dog grooming nail clipping is the most important routine that has to be carried out a couple of times in a month. If you do not clip the nails the dog will start to suffer from infections that grow in the toe nails and these require expensive treatment.

Dog’s nails need to be long enough to reach the ground, but should not be so long that it makes a clicking sound when they walk. Trim a small piece from the end of the nail and keep trimming it until it is short enough. Dogs with dark nails have to be especially taken care of as the quick is difficult to see. Once the quick has been seen, you can use a nail file to smoothen the edges. Do not cut the quick as it leads to bleeding. Use some cotton to stop the flow.

Then go over the same area with the slicker brush to remove small mats. Be certain not to use too much pressure or brush in the same area too long with the slicker to stop brush burn. Work your way up the leg in layers to be certain to get thru the hair. When you’re able to the higher leg, be particularly sure to brush this area completely. Do not forget to sweep inside the leg as mats form here really readily.

Working your way to the front of the dog in this fashion will assure you get all the dead and loose undercoat removed. Another area susceptible to matting is the armpit. To brush here, pick up the dogs foot and hold the leg out in front of him. If you find small mats here, they can usually be brushed out. But if they’re big, they could have to be shaved out. Most groomers will do this for a small fee. Then, once they are shaved, you can keep them from forming again by regular brushing.

The area around the neck is sometimes extraordinarily thick and will take the most time to sweep. In layers, beginning at the rear of the neck, working round the front, and then around the other side.

Pay particular attention to the fine hair behind the ears. Small mats here can be combed out but again if they are massive and near to the skin, have them shaved out. NEVER, EVER take a scissor to mats behind the ears on your dog! It is extremely straightforward to cut the skin. Brush the head of the head, and the cheeks. They lost here, too! Whisker removal is solely a matter of choice. You can use a small, blunt tipped pair of scissors for this.

dampen a cotton ball and clean the ear only so far as you can see into the ear.

To trim toenails, I find a pliers type trimmer to work the best. To avoid cutting the quick in the nail, when dog grooming techniques, take tiny bits off the nail. White nails are easier as you can see the vein through the nail. This can stop the bleeding. Check the feet for any wounds or burrs stuck in the hair between the pads. Being very careful, you can trim the hair even with the base of the foot. To trim the foot, brush the hair down, and trim it round the edge. Then brush it up, and trim it even with the top.

Hotspots are moist areas that typically occur when the dog continually gnaws on a particular spot. Often this is due to flea bites, or not rinsing well enough during a bath. To stop them, when you bathe your dog, rinse well. When you suspect you’ve rinsed enough, rinse for fifteen to 20 minutes more . The are many good books and web sites dedicated to dog grooming techniques, it is worthwhile to check some out.

Many dogs are allergic to flea bites and start gnawing these areas to alleviate the itching. Remember, the more vigilant you are about proper dog grooming techniques, the less work it is.
