Dog Grooming Tips

As most dog owners or lovers will agree, the hair and coat of any breed of dog is one of their main attractions. What they may overlook is the fact that like humans, dogs need constant grooming to maintain a healthy-looking appearance. They also fail to appreciate that aside from investing in expensive dog grooming shears and tools, the exercise requires a long term commitment of time and effort.

Dog grooming is a very challenging chore, this owes largely to the fact that dogs have the widest range of breeds, and that each breed require a unique form of grooming. As with the human hair from the different races, one grooming technique does not ideally suit all. Apart from keeping the dog in a visually attractive form, regular and proper grooming can help them in a healthy form. Most infections are skin related and proper care of their hair and coats would prevent or make any skin condition visible and subsequently treated. Dog grooming has proven to be one of the most effective ways of developing or strengthening a healthy bond with them.

Whatever the type of breed you own, there are some grooming fundamentals that apply to all dogs, the trick is in knowing how to do it properly and how often.

The hair is one of the biggest grooming challenging for dog owners. Certain dog breeds have continuously growing hair that fall off very frequently and can be as unsightly as it can pose health risks to humans. Due to the variety of dog breeds and their individual uniqueness, it is recommended that their haircuts and nail trimmings should be left to professional groomers; however, owning dog grooming shears is necessary to carry out basic maintenance.

More than often, all that is needed to maintain a healthy hair and coat for dogs is frequent brushing. For most dogs owners, investing in good quality combs and brushes is recommended over dog grooming shears. Haircuts can last for months, while brushing can even be done daily. Regular brushing goes a long way to prevent excessive shedding of the hair. Dogs love to be brushed, as much as it has numerous health benefits, and it can be a good regimen to strengthen your bond with the dog

Pets: The choice between a cat or a dog

One may look at myself and find it hard to believe that I am a lover of all animals. To most, I appear to be a typical cat lady. However, I do love and cherish all animals, and believe that certain pets are appropriate for certain people.

If an individual is trying to choose between bringing a dog or a cat into their household, there is much more to this decision than simply deciding which species is more appealing to the eye. Though both cats and dogs make wonderful companions, they both have very different needs, and are able to provide different things to their owners.

Let’s begin with the animals needs. Dogs need much more care and attention than cats do. A dog owner is responsible for feeding, walking, socializing, grooming as well as bathroom breaks. It is important that feeding times and amounts are consistent for the animal’s health and weight. Walking is essential for a dog to maintain health, as well as burn off energy. Failure to walk a dog or provide them with accurate exercise could result in suppressed energy that could be negatively displayed in other ways around the house (i.e. aggression and destructive behaviors). Socializing is another important thing when it comes to our canine friends. Properly socializing a dog will prevent them from becoming overly protective of their owner(s) and being potentially hostile towards strangers. Depending on the breed of dog, grooming can be a quick, or a lengthy chore. Baths are essential, as well as grooming fur. Regular fur trimmings could also be necessary depending on the type of breed. A dog’s owner is also responsibly for taking their dog outside to go to the bathroom. Potty training can be a lengthy and difficult process, and requires a good deal of time and patience.

When it comes to the needs of a cat, the list tends to be a bit shorter. Cats need to be fed, have their litter changed, attention/exercise as well as grooming care. Just as with dogs, regulated feeding times and amounts are important to proper health. Potty-training a cat is relatively easy since cats have a natural tendency to use the litter box on their own. Exercising your cat can be as simple as having another cat companion that your cat enjoys playing with, or having adequate toys available. Cats bathe themselves, so generally the only grooming required involves a good brush.

As far as what each animal can provide to their owners, I believe first and foremost that unconditional love is a given. When treated well, cats and dogs both love their owners. They provide affection, consistency and companionship. Dog’s can be the jogging partner you have always wanted. Cats can be the couch-cuddling companions you adore while reading a favorite book.

In general, when faced with someone that is having a hard time choosing a cat or a dog, I ask them to look at their lifestyle. Someone who is very busy and is rarely home would not make a good dog owner. Remember that dog’s need more care than cats including regular bathroom breaks. Cats are more self-sufficient, therefore, deal better with only a few hours of attention and care a day. Regardless of which animal you feel will suit you best, I guarantee that choosing one of these wonderful life-companions will be a decision you will never regret.

When it comes to trimming dog nails, many dog owners are intimidated up to a point of bringing their dogs to their veterinarian or dog groomer just to avoid this annoying procedure. Most owners seem to be concerned about hurting their dog or not being able to do a good job. They also fear that their dogs will not be able to sit nicely for the procedure or worse struggle, causing the procedure to become unsafe.

Not to mention, the risk of over trimming the nails causing extensive bleeding and the use of special products to stop the bleeding quickly. Dogs as a matter of fact, have an area in their nails called a “quick”. This is a point over which you do not want to cut. Quicks may not be clearlyvisible in dogs with dark nails or if you are in a dark room.

Fortunately should that instance occur, the bleeding can be stopped effectively by packing the affected nail with some flour. The flour will stop the bleeding and allow the blood to clot.

Luckily, now there is a new revolutionary product that should be able to help owners regain control of their dogs and successfully trim their dog’s nails by their own. This will also help owners save a significant amount of money since most dogs may require frequent nail trimmings especially those not exercised enough or senior.

Dogs with long nails may get injured easily and their paws may become slightly deformed as their toes become splayed. Some may also develop balance problems and even begin to limp.

This new revolutionary product is called Pedipaws, and it just recently was put on the market. Pedipaws works by gently filing the nail quickly and safely. Dogs will not feel pain, as this filer does not cut but rather, it rounds the nail so that it will no longer cause scratches or get tangled in carpets or upholstery.

Requiring only 2 “CC” alkaline batteries, Pedipaws can be taken anywhere: on vacation, on a walk or at the beach. Its size fits all, from Chihuahuas to Saint Bernards. Pedipaws is practical and economical in the long run. The product will cost you just about the same price it costs to take your dog for one nail trim appointment.

The old days of floors and furniture scratches are over. Dogs and owners now can enjoy each other without the frustration of having couches shredded or frequent vet visits to keep the nails short. Fortunately, this small tool has revolutionized the dog/owner bond allowing pets and owners to come to a compromise: less damaged homes and happier pets!
