Dog Grooming question by Joan F: How do you begin a career in dog grooming when there is no school close. What should I do? Where do I start?
I want to learn dog grooming but there is no schools close to me where I can take a course. On-line courses are offered but I feel it is a hands on learning experience. Where do I start?

Look for a job where they do dog grooming like SuperPetz or Petsmart for example. See if they have on the job training. I wouldn’t go to a independent shop. They are more family owned and want family members working there.

Poodles have been a popular amongst MILLIONS of people around the globe. Poodles are just wonderful dogs. They are glorious dogs with great features. I will state their features and explain more about this great breed of dog. Poodles, wow, are you serious?

Poodles come in three different sizes. They can be toy poodles, miniature poodles or the standard poodles. Poodles are dogs with the non shedding feature. This feature is admired by dog breeders so this feature makes this dog popular in the breeding process. They are usually bred for their non shedding feature. They have an allergen free feature as well which makes them compatible with people who have allergies with dogs. The toy poodles, miniature poodles, and standard poodles look the same, the only difference being, the sizes of these dogs. The poodles have a wiry coat of fur which needs to be groomed daily and the poodle should be bathed after every other day or if they are dirty. The poodle comes in a variety of colors like white, cream, blue, brown, tan, black and some other bright and dark colors. The poodle is known to be one of the world’s most intelligent dog breed there is. This is also a feature which makes it popular.

The toy poodle is the smallest version of the poodle. The toy poodle is really smart and is a popular choice among dog lovers. The appearance is the same like all the other poodles. It can come in a variety of colors. It needs to be groomed daily and bathed as needed. Since it is small it might have to go to the bathroom more. It might be around 13 inches tall. The toy poodle makes an excellent watch dog because it has a high pitched bark. If you live in an apartment this poodle would be an excellent choice but it should be trained not to bark because if it does bark a lot then the people next door will come and complain so Beware. It is still a great dog.

The miniature poodle is the medium sized poodle. The miniature poodle is also really smart and looks the same as the toy poodle and the standard poodle. The miniature might be around 20 inches tall. The miniature poodle makes for an excellent watch dog because it does bark a lot. Also, the owner should groom this dog everyday and give it a bath as needed. The miniature poodle is also a great dog for the apartment life because it is also pretty small. Two words “Great Dog.”

The standard poodle is the biggest of them all. The standard poodle is intelligent and stands around 30 inches. The standard poodle is a popular choice among dog owners. This poodle makes an excellent watch dog as well because it barks a lot. Like the other types of poodles it needs to be groomed daily and bathed as needed.

Here you have it the great features of the toy poodle, miniature poodle, and the standard poodle. Remember that the poodle needs to be groomed daily and that it is a really lovable dog. A simple sentence would describe it, “A great dog with some great features.” The poodle has some admired features and would love to be under the care of a great dog owner.

Dog breed: Shed – Part 1

Some dogs may shed less hair, but there are no dogs that are completely allergen-free. My Mum is allergic to dogs so I am speaking from experience. For those who suffer from allergies you will know the discomfort that they can cause. It can make you sneeze, then your eyes may itch, the more you rub them the more they hurt but you need to rub them. Allergies can make you wheeze, all in all they are very unpleasant.

My Dad wanted a dog, my Mum was allergic so what did we do? We borrowed a toy poodle to see if she was allergic. They have wool not hair so they don`t shed. It didn`t seem to cause too many problems so off we went to buy a poodle.

Of course my Dad doesn`t like small dogs so we bought a big dog, a standard poodle. He was around 29 inches and black. Now it is true, poodles don`t shed as they have wool not fur. However the wool grows, it needs clipping. No dog hairs though so no allergies? Not quite true.

The poodle would need clipping about every six weeks. In this time he would need grooming or he would become tangled. Now he wasn`t a show dog, he was a pet. He didn`t have the extravagant coat of the show poodles, he was clipped quite close. He still became tangled if not groomed regularly. My Mum was unable to groom him as this would make her sneeze.

Dust would be the main problem here. Most people who are allergic to dogs are in fact allergic to dust also. When the dog`s wool became longer, he attracted more dust, therefore he was not allergen free. I must say though, it was much better for my Mum to have this dog than one who shed hair, but he still made her sneeze.

The other problem that my Mum had with this dog was his barking. I don`t mean it got on her nerves. What I do mean is, when he barked, his saliva would spray (very minute droplets that no-one could see). This would make my Mum sneeze and would cause irritation making her face itch. So you see, this allergy was nothing to do with shedding hair.

Anyway, my Dad then wanted a lurcher who was going to live outside, then outside at night, then she was allowed in the kitchen, then the whole house. My poor Mum. We picked a short haired lurcher who didn`t shed much. My Mum was still more allergic to the lurcher than the poodle. She would take anti-histamine tablets frequently. Whilst it was not unbearable for her, she did not enjoy it as it did make her suffer.

This short haired lurcher who didn`t shed much was groomed outside most days

Toy poodle grooming – Part 1

Grooming your toy poodle

A poodle is very intelligent with a proud look and loving personality. They were one of my favourite dogs to groom at the shop and one of my favourite pets. They are quick to learn and easy to get use to the requirements we bring upon them for a certain look. They are eager to please you and love the attention brought upon them at grooming time.

I worked with a local shelter and on one of my visits there sat this little toy poodle with sad eyes. They said that if they did not find a home for her soon they were going to put her down. She was older and belonged to a lady that had been put in a nursery home. She came home with me. Pepper (because of the grey hair in her black fur) was a very loving companion, but she had some bad experiences with grooming and hated her paws to be touched. It is an obstacle with older dogs, but they can overcome the fear with loving attention and making groom time less stressful.

Poodles need to be brushed with a slick and pin brush daily to keep the fur matt-free and clean. The ears should be checked for cleanliness and dryness regularly to reduce problems with infection. They barely shed at all, but their skin is sensitive and needs special attention when older to stay moist and healthy. Nails should be kept trim and clipping done regularly.

Clipping should be done every six weeks. Professional grooming is best for the attention needed, but if you would like to work with them yourselves the easiest cut is the puppy clip.

Get a quality set of clippers, as the curls in their coats can be tight and catch in the teeth of the blade. Brush out the coat for a smooth and matt-free finish before using the clippers. Get a #10 blade to trim between the pads and the entire foot. This blade should also be used on the stomach, around the anus, and about an inch up the tail for a puffy ball to be formed. On the nose and around the face to just over their eyes is also the #10 blade.

On the body use a #5F blade to clip over the entire body except tail and ears. Start from the base of the tail and work up to the head slowly, then down the sides and legs. This will give an even coat that is easy to manage.

Trim around the ears with a good set of scissors. Hold the ear between your first two fingers and follow the line of the ear for even hair to that shape. Around the head shape into a bowl-like ball and at the feet for even skirt around the paws. Brush the tail to the tip and hold between your finger to trim evenly, then at the base of the tail shake it a bit to fluffy it out. Trim around the fluff to a ball-like sphere on the end.

Bathing should be done after the grooming. Bath once a week with a quality shampoo; when they become older use a good oatmeal brand for their skin’s care as well. Use a dryer and brush as you are to get a nice fluff to the coat. If you have just given a clip, check after the drying for any faults in the trim and use scissors to clean it up.
