Dog Grooming: Behavioral Benefits of a Regular Schedule
Dog Grooming Supplies

Most pet owners know that the way a dog is treated can have a serious impact on the animal’s behavior, and dog grooming is no exception. A regular grooming schedule not only keeps your pet healthy, it can also improve the dog’s temperament. Working to ensure that your dog has positive grooming experiences will help him or her be comfortable in many social situations, and it can also deepen the bond between you and your pet.

The care provided to a dog through dog grooming provides the basic foundation training that your dog needs to become comfortable with being touched. If your pooch is uncomfortable having her paws or ears handled, a regular routine will teach her that she doesn’t have to be afraid. Long-haired breeds can quickly develop painful mats and tangles in their fur if it isn’t brushed regularly, and this can lead to a dog that shies away from being touched because the dog has learned that petting can hurt.

Regular dog grooming can also help you learn to communicate better with your pet. As you learn to respond to Fido’s needs, he also learns acceptable ways of letting you know when he is uncomfortable or in pain. As your dog becomes accustomed to a scheduled routine and around grooming tools you may find that he behaves more calmly in other social situations as well such as when children approach and want to play with the puppy’s ears or tail. If your dog has already learned to be comfortable having her ears handled or being around dog grooming clippers, she can take this in stride and stay calm through the attention.

Eventually, you may find that your pet dozes off during your dog grooming sessions. This provides excellent behavioral conditioning for your pet as well. Some dogs have been known to wake abruptly, and even snap or growl, when they are touched while sleeping. Continuing the dog grooming session while your pet dozes helps the dog learn that being awakened by a touch is nothing to be afraid of.

If you have never groomed a dog before, it is best to find a professional groomer that your dog likes. The groomer can teach you how to care for your dog, and can give you tips and advice on the tools you will need to do the job at home. Some breeds need to be groomed more than others, and some breeds may actually suffer if they are groomed too often. Your groomer and your veterinarian can both provide you with information on your specific dog’s needs, and help make the experience enjoyable for both you and your pet. They can also recommend the proper dog grooming supplies and tools required to get the job done the right way.

The best part about setting a regular grooming routine for your dog is that it makes having a dog more enjoyable. Clean, well-groomed dogs are a pleasure to snuggle and cuddle up with, and the extra attention goes a long way toward establishing a life-long bond between you and your pet. While grooming your dog may be challenging at times, and you may lose your patience sometimes stick with it. The benefits of dog grooming are well worth the effort!

Dog Grooming Supplies question by cnj4ever: Which dog grooming tools should i buy?
Okay I am currently a bather at Petsmart and I am about to go to grooming school here shortly. I just don’t know which clippers/shears/blades to buy. Everyone in my groom shop says Oysters over heat even though they are very fast and powerful. They also need alot of maintenence. And andis are low maintence but not as much power as Oyster. And as far as shears I have no Idea which ones to get. I heard Paw Brothers are nice at first but stiffen up very quickly. I dont know about bladesd either…ceramic or metal? which sizes should I start out with. I am just looking for something that will last me for a while but not break the wallet? I know grooming supplies are expensive but I dont want clippers that cost me like 400 bucks either. so if you have any suggestions on a GREAT starter kit, let me know.

Answer by Rotten Rotts
The school should tell you exactly what you need as far as blades and sizes of sheers .Your clippers have allot to do with which one fits best in your hand, so do your sheers. Oster and Andes are about the same quality, I have used both. I never like Paw Brothers, they just did not fit my hands. I spent a bloody fortune on sheers so before you buy try some out at school before you buy them.
Ask the Pet Smart groomers to let you try theirs out. Remember you will be doing this all day for years to come and you don’t want to end up with carpel tunnel or arthritis like me.

How To Choose The Right Transport Dog Crate
Dog Crate

There are different types of transport dog crates available out there to choose from but the one thing that should be at the top of your mind is how comfortable your dog will be in the dog crates. If you buy small dog crates for larger dogs then your dog might feel uncomfortable and even suffocated and this will not only affect his temperament but also make him grumpy. Most of the transport dog crates have been created keeping in mind the requirement of dogs of different sizes.

While picking up dog crates, you need to take into consideration the height as well as the length of your dog. You should keep in mind that the transport dog crates should be big enough for your dog to lie down and even stand up without having to duck his head. He should also be able to lie down without feeling cramped. If you have a puppy then you can always buy wire dog crates with a dog kennel divider panel. The main advantage of having a divider panel is that it will add more versatility to the dog crates as well as help you save money. Using the divider panel, you can adjust the size of the transport dog crates according to the growth of your puppy.

There are different types of transport dog crates available but they can all be classified into three primary groups:

Plastic Dog Crates: The plastic transport dog crates are mostly made from durable polypropylene and have chrome plated steel doors as well as chrome-plated ventilation side panels. These dog crates also have a leak-proof bottom. One of the best things about plastic crates is that they can be assembled without tools and go together in minutes. They are great for housebreaking puppies and the bottom half can be used alone as a pet bed. Plastic dog crates offer the dog privacy and are the only dog kennel approved for airline travel.

Metal Dog Crates: Metal dog crates provide the strength and durability serious gundog owners look for when selecting a dog transport box. Our metal dog crates are pre-assembled and ready to transport your hunting dog in the back of your pick-up truck or SUV. When selecting a metal dog box you should select a model large enough for your puppy or dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down with a water bowl.

Wire Dog Crates: Wire dog crates are easy to clean, having a tough rust-proof ABS plastic pan which slides out for easy maintenance. These dog cages provide maximum ventilation and security. Portable dog crates have the advantage of being able to fold-down to a suitcase size for easy storage and portability. Our Midwest Folding Dog Cages come with doors that overlap the frame and are secure with two slide bolt latches making these dog kennels extremely sturdy.

If your looking for a new dog crate take a look at our online store, we have a huge choice of transport dog crates for all shapes and sizes.

Dog Crate question by atta: Where can I get a good deal on a dog crate?
I’m hoping to find a wire dog crate that is at least 33″ H for under $ 100. Right now my dog has a 30” crate, and it’s a tad short. They seem to be just over at places like Petsmart/ Petco. Is there somewhere where they are a tad cheaper, on-line is fine!

Are small dogs safer pets around children? – Part 4

Actually, the size of the dog isn’t nearly as important as the breed of the dog and the temperament of the dog of that breed. Throw in the age of the child and the temperament of the child. Then tack on the ability and knowledge of the adult’s responsibility in teaching that child the proper way of handling, training, grooming of that new friend and any dog no matter the size, shape or breed will make an excellent pet for your child.

Most people will just automatically start naming different breeds. But in every breed, I’m sorry to say, there are good ones, and there are bad ones. Do not ever make the mistake of just assuming, that you have read “Labrador Retrievers” make excellent kid dogs without first selecting the right Labrador Retriever that coincides with the personality of that child.

Do all of the research you can on the breed of dog you feel as an adult, you yourself can handle. For you as the adult, will be the one who teaches that child/dog relationship. Dogs learn from the alpha of any pack, and let’s face it, in the eyes of that new addition, that is exactly what you are to him or her. It’s new pack. For someone who wants a great dog but isn’t around dogs all that much and for those who may work a lot of hours away from the home and don’t have a lot of time, I would steer clear of the high maintenance grooming type breeds; (cocker spaniels, poodles, schnauzers.) For someday it will be your child that takes on the role of grooming and not much worse than a matted coat that you have to shave off on a dog that just doesn’t quite look right with no hair!

Take in major consideration the age and activity level of your child; and make sure that child goes with you in the selection process! Watch how your child interacts with the puppies but don’t be fooled if he or she shows a strong like for one. Watch that puppies interaction with your child too! If you child leans more on the “lazy” side and spends much more of his or her time in front of the TV rather than outside running and jumping and playing; you sure do NOT want to pick out the highest energy puppy! Those require a lot of exercise to spend that energy, and unless you are willing to be the one to “entertain” this new addition, you might want to persuade your child for a less active, calmer puppy.

Certain breeds are just naturally “more protective” then other breeds. I would NEVER suggest one of these breeds for any child who is that of a “loner”. For when you introduce this type of breed to a child that is not known to have a lot of other people for that dog to come in contact with, the dog will become TOTALLY protective of that child. (German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, Dobermans), and that child’s territory.

Also, you may just love the little toy breeds. But more for the safety of the dog, rather than your child, please, please PLEASE, take in consideration the “gentleness” factor of your child. Dachshunds are sweet and cute, but they also have a very weak back, and if your child is klutzy or just plain a rough houser, PLEASE stay away from this child/dog relationship.

I am a firm believer that there is a kid for every dog as well as there’s a dog for every kid. I am also a firm believer that it is the parents responsibility to be able to teach children the RIGHT way to handle and love a dog, and then nature just takes over from the dog’s point of view of how to handle and love your child no matter how big or how small it is!

Why the miniature schnauzer is a popular dog in the USA

4599606747 ea456e6cbe m Why the miniature schnauzer is a popular dog in the USA

Why People Love Miniature Schnauzers

I believe the miniature schnauzer to be one of the great undiscovered pets of the large dog lovers of the world. Many a big-dog lover has scoffed at my little miniature schnauzer, thinking that because he is a small dog, he can’t be much fun. I believe in fact, that the miniature schnauzer often believes he is a big dog trapped in a small dog’s body. This is why all types of dog lovers can come to adore the miniature schnauzer.

My husband is a shining example of why the miniature schnauzer should not be judged for his size. When I brought our little mini “Max” home from the Humane Society, I could tell my husband was less than thrilled. Always having been a big-dog kind of guy, he couldn’t see how this 21-pound little guy was ever going to keep up. Boy did Max prove him wrong.

Athletic

The miniature schnauzer is surprisingly athletic for a little dog. Our mini Max can climb mountains like a billy goat, leap from a stationary position up to four feet in the air, and keep pace with a fast-moving vehicle. His athleticism does have its limits. Although he has learned to swim, his skinny stick-legs are rather inefficient at paddling through the water. Swimming certainly is not his favorite, but he still has the determination to do it when needed.

Temperament

The miniature schnauzer is a little dog with a big personality. Look into the eyes of a mini, and you will see what I mean. This dog will love you to pieces every time you come home, even if you just left five minutes earlier. He will sense when you are sad or ill and snuggle up against you to make you feel better. He also knows when it is time to play, and loves a good session of rough-housing.

Ideal Family Dog

The miniature schnauzer really is ideally suited to family life. He can play and rough-house with the dad, get tender loving attention from the mom, and be hours of entertainment for the wee ones. He will also keep the family in shape, whether it is through the daily walks that he looks forward to with glee, or trips to the dog park where he can run free.

Non-allergenic

In addition to all of these unique qualities, there is one aspect of this breed that really makes the “miniature schnauzer an ideal pet. Although you do need to take your mini to a groomer regularly, or “groom him yourself, his coat is ideal in that he does not shed! This means no dog hair to clean up after and no issues if a family member has allergies.

In the end, Max won my husband’s heart and to this day my husband insists that Max is now “his dog” even though I was the one that picked him out. I had to do a little convincing in the beginning to get my big-dog lover to open his heart to this small guy, but five years later they are the best of buds.
