Dog Grooming Table question by Mackenzie: Grooming my dog at home?
I have a pair of dog scissors, shampoo and pedi paws/nail clippers. What other tools do I need? Can electric razors used for humans be safe for dogs too? Also, my dog gets very growly and snappy when being groomed so as an extra precaution I was thinking of using a muzzle or muzzle strap. Is there something at home that can be used instead of this? Can his ears be cleaned with cotton balls and water? Do I need to brush his teeth? If so how can I get him used to this? Any tips will be appreciated. I am planning on grooming him outdoors on a folding table as he is small. His hair is medium length sort of like a king charles. Thanks!
Can I get different blades for a human razor if I can’t use the same blades? Cant afford dog razor…
Also, he lets me put my fingers in his mouth but hates having his nails cut which is why I need the muzzle. He dislikes having his paw hair trimmed, around his butt etc.
arabianowner: i am going to buy dog clippers but I was just curious to know if there were different attatchments. I am not a professional but my dog lets me trim his hair with scissors, brush his teeth, etc. I just plan on doing the full haircut and ear cleaning, nail trimming, etc.
bigmac: what else did you want to know??

you can’t use a human electric razor for dogs, dogs have more hair and sometimes finer/silkier hair and require a different blade. They sell some reasonably priced ones at WalMart. Buy a pin brush, brush out all mats and tangles before using the clippers. bathe him AFTER doing a “rough” cut (less hair to wash/dry), then do a detailed cutting after he’s dry.

Get someone to help you groom him. this person can help by holding him still and giving him tiny treats when he behaves nicely when being groomed.

Ears – cotton ball and an ear cleaning solution (from vet or pet store). water will not break down the gunk that’s there. do this after the bath so you make sure all the water is out and he doesn’t get an infection.

Teeth – brush his teeth and make sure you’re using doggie toothpaste not human. I usually have my dog chew on the bristles while brushing.

Nails – make sure you know where your dog’s quick is so you don’t over cut. oh and buy some Kwik/septic(?) powder just in case you do over cut and need to stop the bleeding.

And Lindsay has a dog grooming business in Seddon called Doggy Dooz. Oh, and Pam Petrie from Parkdale is one. FROM the outset, Paul would like to make it clear that he doesn't hang around toilets. But he has been making a bit of a study of them. …

7 Reasons To Get Better at Grooming

Article by Tristan Andrews

Grooming your dog is an essential part of dog ownership. Many people are familiar with the basics such as removing tangles and shampooing for a great, clean shine. It’s worth looking further into the world of dog grooming because there are many benefits you may not have considered before.

The first thing to realize is that grooming is not just for improving the look of your dog’s coat. There are also many health benefits if you groom regularly. You’ll want to start right away because:

1. Grooming will take away dead hair and skin. This will not only remove an unsightly and unwanted mess, it will also improve that air circulation to your dog’s coat. This is essential in the summertime when it’s hot and humid.

2. You’ll also find that grooming increases the blood flow to hair follicles. In turn, this will improve the health of your dog’s whole coat.

3. Grooming also stimulates the lymphatic system, which is similar to the results a human would get from a deep tissue massage.

4. Another benefit of grooming is that it will put your dog in a great mood. Combine this with your gentle voice and you’ll be helping to strengthen the bond that is between you.

5. A benefit that many people don’t think about is that you will become more familiar with your dog’s body while grooming. That means you will be able to detect many health problems that might occur.

6. You may find ticks or other insects that are attached to your dog. These can be very deadly so keep an eye out for them.

7. While you are grooming your pet you will also want to clip their nails. This will give you a chance to check the pads of their feet to see if there are any problems.

If you don’t have the essential grooming materials you can certainly find them at your local pet supply stores. If you would rather shop online there are many stores that offer the equipment for sale as well. As an added bonus you will also find a lot of great information and advice on the web.

For those who want to know more, your local community college may offer a program to teach dog owners how to groom. Dog clubs and other dog related groups might offer training as well.

If you move beyond the basics and become an excellent groomer you might even want to think about starting your own service. There are many pet owners who don’t have the time and know-how to groom their dogs themselves, but know it is a necessity. Turn their ignorance into dollars as you groom others’ pets part time or even full time.

Even if you don’t opt to start your own service you will be able to rest assured that your own dog is being properly cared for. There are obviously many rewards that go hand in hand with grooming, so start as soon as possible.

Dog Grooming Tools question by Lissy: What is the best way to de-mat my dog with these tools?
I have a havanese that gets particularly whiney when I de-groom him, so I would like to make it as comfortable for him as possible. I bought de-tangler and a de-matting brush. I also have a steel comb, scissors and a regular brush.
What’s the best (and most comfortable) way to get these mats o out? Thanks!

Dog Grooming Tools best answer:

Answer by Fetch!
~ Have you ever tried a leave in dog conditioner?

It helps for dogs that have long hair that mats easily. Also, comb through it slowly while holding part of the hair at the top so you don’t pull the skin. I use a big soft plastic brush and then a little comb for little tangles on my Poodles. However, I keep them cut down so this is usually not a problem other than the ears. I would give the conditioner a try, and make sure you only try to brush when the hair is dry as wet hair tangles easier.

Dog Grooming: Behavioral Benefits of a Regular Schedule
Dog Grooming Supplies

Most pet owners know that the way a dog is treated can have a serious impact on the animal’s behavior, and dog grooming is no exception. A regular grooming schedule not only keeps your pet healthy, it can also improve the dog’s temperament. Working to ensure that your dog has positive grooming experiences will help him or her be comfortable in many social situations, and it can also deepen the bond between you and your pet.

The care provided to a dog through dog grooming provides the basic foundation training that your dog needs to become comfortable with being touched. If your pooch is uncomfortable having her paws or ears handled, a regular routine will teach her that she doesn’t have to be afraid. Long-haired breeds can quickly develop painful mats and tangles in their fur if it isn’t brushed regularly, and this can lead to a dog that shies away from being touched because the dog has learned that petting can hurt.

Regular dog grooming can also help you learn to communicate better with your pet. As you learn to respond to Fido’s needs, he also learns acceptable ways of letting you know when he is uncomfortable or in pain. As your dog becomes accustomed to a scheduled routine and around grooming tools you may find that he behaves more calmly in other social situations as well such as when children approach and want to play with the puppy’s ears or tail. If your dog has already learned to be comfortable having her ears handled or being around dog grooming clippers, she can take this in stride and stay calm through the attention.

Eventually, you may find that your pet dozes off during your dog grooming sessions. This provides excellent behavioral conditioning for your pet as well. Some dogs have been known to wake abruptly, and even snap or growl, when they are touched while sleeping. Continuing the dog grooming session while your pet dozes helps the dog learn that being awakened by a touch is nothing to be afraid of.

If you have never groomed a dog before, it is best to find a professional groomer that your dog likes. The groomer can teach you how to care for your dog, and can give you tips and advice on the tools you will need to do the job at home. Some breeds need to be groomed more than others, and some breeds may actually suffer if they are groomed too often. Your groomer and your veterinarian can both provide you with information on your specific dog’s needs, and help make the experience enjoyable for both you and your pet. They can also recommend the proper dog grooming supplies and tools required to get the job done the right way.

The best part about setting a regular grooming routine for your dog is that it makes having a dog more enjoyable. Clean, well-groomed dogs are a pleasure to snuggle and cuddle up with, and the extra attention goes a long way toward establishing a life-long bond between you and your pet. While grooming your dog may be challenging at times, and you may lose your patience sometimes stick with it. The benefits of dog grooming are well worth the effort!

Dog Grooming Supplies question by cnj4ever: Which dog grooming tools should i buy?
Okay I am currently a bather at Petsmart and I am about to go to grooming school here shortly. I just don’t know which clippers/shears/blades to buy. Everyone in my groom shop says Oysters over heat even though they are very fast and powerful. They also need alot of maintenence. And andis are low maintence but not as much power as Oyster. And as far as shears I have no Idea which ones to get. I heard Paw Brothers are nice at first but stiffen up very quickly. I dont know about bladesd either…ceramic or metal? which sizes should I start out with. I am just looking for something that will last me for a while but not break the wallet? I know grooming supplies are expensive but I dont want clippers that cost me like 400 bucks either. so if you have any suggestions on a GREAT starter kit, let me know.

Dog Grooming Supplies best answer:

Answer by Rotten Rotts
The school should tell you exactly what you need as far as blades and sizes of sheers .Your clippers have allot to do with which one fits best in your hand, so do your sheers. Oster and Andes are about the same quality, I have used both. I never like Paw Brothers, they just did not fit my hands. I spent a bloody fortune on sheers so before you buy try some out at school before you buy them.
Ask the Pet Smart groomers to let you try theirs out. Remember you will be doing this all day for years to come and you don’t want to end up with carpel tunnel or arthritis like me.

Dog Grooming Tools question by KelsandDane: need advice on tools for grooming dog nails?
I want your opinion on different tools to clip my dane’s nails…. i have tried some manual, and want suggestions on the electric grinders…. plus’s/minuses? brands, sites/stores?
She is very large and hard to restrain and hates her paws being touched(makes it very hard because she 100+lbs), the clippers seem to hurt because they squeeze and break the nail
Thanks for all your help!

Dog Grooming Tools best answer:

Answer by Borders Rock
Dremmel…not only good for dog’s nails but useful for many purposes. I still clip my dogs (and all the dogs that I groom) with regular clippers and I see no purpose for my business to do otherwise.
It’s harder to get a dog used to an electric grinder than clippers (since in my business, I don’t have the time to train each one)….
Also, try an emery board after clipping….same effect…Or an emery board daily….then you don’t have to worry about clipping

Pet Zoom Review – Some Crucial Information

mydoghelp.com Grooming and brushing a dog is not quite as simple as it sounds. If you think you can use any of the several types of brushes available to groom and brush your dog, you will be so wrong. Each of the grooming tools available in the market is meant for a specific use, and a good understanding about the specific application is necessary to make grooming easier for you. Professional dog groomers have the expertise to look after your dog in a better way than you can manage. The expert dog groomers would use slicker brushes to remove mats and tangles from the dog’s fur for all types of coats. A slicker brush would remove dead hairs from the undercoat and = coarser hairs from the outer coat of the dog’s fur.
