Essential Dog Grooming Supplies You’ll Need for your New Dog

If you are thinking about adopting a new puppy, then are some duties you better be aware of. One of these is grooming. It is important for the overall health and happiness of the dog as well as your house and furniture. In order to begin grooming your new dog, you’ll need to begin by purchasing the correct dog supplies for the job.

To begin with, your grooming supplies depend on the breed of dog you have. Long-haired dogs require different shampoos and brushes than a short-haired breed. Here is a list of items you’ll need to get the job done:

Brushes and combs are a must. There are a variety of combs and brushes specifically designed for all sorts of breeds. The type of brush is dependent on if your dog has a single coat or a double coat and long or short hair, along with many other factors.

Dogs with a single coat typically only require a pin brush and a mat comb. These keep their coats looking great and the canine feeling good. If your dog has a double coat, then you’ll want to buy an undercoat rake and bristle. These allow you to reach the layer of fur closest to its body. Some breeds usually need more brushing and grooming than others. A dog with long hair has to be brushed daily to prevent tangles and snares. Short coated dogs can go about a week between brushings.

Next, you’ll need to buy some dog shampoo. While you may think any old shampoo will do, you need to get one which is made distinctively for canines. A dog’s skin will dry out if you attempt to use one of your shampoos. This will leave the dog feeling itchy and generally quite uncomfortable.

Don’t forget about your dog’s nails. It is important to keep them regularly trimmed in order to avoid painful breaking or possibly becoming too long. Active dogs that spend a a great deal of time outdoors running and digging will need their nails trimmed less often than an indoor dog. You’ll find there are a few types of nail clippers you can use. I personally prefer guillotine clippers. They are easy to use, especially when you have to do the job yourself.

Recent veterinarian studies have discovered canine dental disease can affect a dog’s overall health. Combat this by brushing your dog’s teeth to remove plaque. There are specially designed toothbrushes and toothpaste for dogs. My advice is to start brushing the dog’s teeth while it is still a pup. This way it will become used to the activity in later years.

Dog Grooming Products ? Which One to Start For Your Dog!

Dogs are most kept pets in the world. People look after them like their own family because dogs are famous friendly animal to man and so for that people try to keep their dogs clean and well groomed because dogs tend to play in mud and gets dirty roaming around.

If you are a new dog owner and are not familiar with the basic hygiene requirements of a dog, there are a variety of products available in market which includes shampoos, dog collars, anti ticks powders and sprays, clothes, shoes and basically anything you can think of to groom your dog.

To start from basic grooming to keep your dog healthy he needs to be cleaned and brushed regularly so that his loose and dead hair which collects underneath his coat brushes away easily and most importantly fleas and ticks do not get easy hiding place, but still if the dog has fleas and ticks problems you need to buy anti ticks spray which is easily available in the market, once a week is more than enough to keep insects away, this usage depends on which breed you have, if a dog is hairy then he needs to be regularly brushed, but if he has short hair then there is not much problem, but still he needs to be brushed once a week.

You should give your dog a bath every six to eight weeks or take him to grooming salon. Bath is very important as it cleans and freshen him up and secondly the dog will smell better too, depending whether grooming spray is applied or not. Ask for the best grooming spray in the market as it makes the dog smell nice and plus keep his coat shiny and protects from extra hair falling.

One aspect of grooming that is often neglected when it should be attended is your dog’s teeth, give its teeth a good brushing with a toothbrush of suitable bristles and toothpaste. If you can’t persuade your dog to have his teeth cleaned now and then, give him plenty of bones and occasionally a dental stick to help reduce the tartar levels and keep his gums stronger for longer.

Apart from keeping your dog healthy, if you want him to stand out from other dogs and make him look attractive you should buy clothes, shoes, bands, different dog collars which some in variety such as in chains which are for big heavy dogs to control and small leather collars for small dogs.

If you cannot give much time to your dog’s care, then you should regularly take him to grooming salon, remember to take your dog to a reputable salon because the staff there will be well trained and very well experienced, there you can get complete services for dogs, starting from bathing, nail cutting, hair cutting and hair coloring. All dog groomers should have cotton balls, dog shampoos, Q-tips and ear cleaner on hand.

Dog Grooming Take Patience

Grooming your dog is just as important as your personal grooming. Dogs are great companions and are good friends. Your dog is part of your life, and you will want him to look good and feel his best.

Start by keeping him brushed. Different dogs have different hair types. The different types of dog hair are long coats, medium coats, short coats, curly coats and wavy coats. There are brushes that are designed for your dog’s hair type. You may need to try a couple of different brushes until you see what brush works best for his type of coat and one that he likes you to use because it feels good. Don’t be in a hurry when brushing your dog. Don’t brush him too fast or so hard that you hurt his delicate skin by pulling on his matted hair.

Brushing your dog has many benefits. First: It is a bonding time between you and your dog. You can brush gently and talk to him quietly as you brush his hair to a beautiful glossy and smooth coat, free of mats and tangles. Second: Brushing helps to distribute his natural oils in his coat so that it will look healthy and shiny. Third: If you can consistently brush his coat a couple of times a week, depending on the need, you can reduce the tangles and mats that will develop. This is especially important if your dog has long hair. Fourth: It allows you to inspect his skin, looking for any type of irritation, skin disease, or fleas.

In addition to having a good brush and comb for your dog, the type of shampoo is also important. Do not use human shampoo on your dog. You should use a good non-detergent shampoo. Human shampoos are designed to remove oils, and this is not the goal when bathing your dog. A good shampoo that has a proper Ph balance will help eliminate any itching issues your dog may have. Using a dog shampoo dog allows his naturals oil to give him that healthy, shiny, silky looking coat.

Short hair dogs need less grooming, and may only need weekly brushing. A stainless steel comb or natural bristle brush will keep his hair shiny and healthy looking.

The longer the hair on your dog, the more attention it will need. The more often you brush him allows you to reduce the mats and tangles, and also reduces his shedding.

Curly haired dogs shed less, they have less dander, but his hair may have a tendency to get more tangles and knots. Brushing with a good dog grooming brush often can reduce these tangles.

Since long hair dogs require more care than short hair dogs, bathing more often will also be necessary. When you decide it is time for your dog to be bathed, you should first brush your dog’s coat. Bathing will automatically cause some matting or tangles and getting rid of as many mats as possible before bathing will help beautify his coat. There are also products that will allow the mat or tangle to release easier. When using this conditioner, apply it to the tangle and work it in for a couple of minutes, then comb it gently, being careful not to pull so hard you hurt your dog.

To shampoo your dog, use these steps:

If you are bathing him in your bathtub, put a towel or rubber mat down first to eliminate him from slipping.

Use warm water. Use care in washing his face. Use a wash cloth, wash mat, or soft sponge around his eyes, nose and ears.

Get his hairs completely wet and apply the shampoo, lathering generously. Be sure to clean his tummy, tail, his feet and in between his toes, the skin folds, his rump and under his tail. Keep the shampoo away from his eyes, nose, and ears, but gently and carefully wash his face.

Rinse him thoroughly. This can be a time consuming process especially on long hair dogs. Any remaining shampoo could cause a skin irritation.

Towel dry your dog thoroughly, and allow his hair to air dry completely or use a hair dryer, if he allows you to do that. Brush again.

Reward your dog for his patience. A treat or a loving squeeze just may be the praise he deserves and wants.

Reward yourself. You have done a wonderful service for your dog.

If you have difficulty with the shampooing process or you don’t have the time, space, patience, or desire, or the mats are just too difficult to remove, seek the services of a professional dog groomer. They will also trim your dog’s nails.

Your efforts will be rewarded by having a good looking dog. He will enjoy being clean, and you will enjoy a good smelling, faithful companion your dog.

Difference between Cat Grooming & Dog Grooming

Cats have been domesticated since the times of the Pharos of Egypt. They believed themselves to be the first enthusiasts to bathe cats. The grooming and domestication has not made the cats incapable of grooming themselves properly.

Pet grooming is very important for its fur as it aids in getting rid of the undercoat, prevents hairballs, prevents parasitic infection and improves circulation. Different breeds need different types of grooming. Some need combing and brushing daily some need it less often. Most cats groom themselves and spend the considerable amount of day grooming themselves. You need to check the ears, eyes, mouth, nails and feet when you groom your cat. It is the perfect opportunity to check it over for lumps and bumps. Part the hair and check the skin for any problem such as fleas, sore or inflamed areas that require serious attention. For any serious cat illness consult a vet.

Use a short toothed comb to remove the dead hair of your cat. Some cats with short hair have delicate coats and skin so you need to be cautious while you use these combs and brushes that you are not damaging the cat. You can loosen the dead hair with your hands before you resort to using a brush or a comb on your cat. Run along your fingers through the fur in the direction opposite to which the hair grows. This also stimulates the natural oil of the skin and this keeps the fur shining and healthy too. Then you can use the pet grooming equipments that are best suited for your cat’s fur. You do not need to bathe your cat if it has been groomed well and completely. The natural oils in the cat fur will make it gleam. Bathing the cat could result into knots and mats, making the fur extremely unmanageable. If your cat has a specific skin complaint or is suffering from fleas then use a shampoo that is suitable for its skin. The cat shampoos are easier to rinse out and make less lather. Wet the coat completely before you use the shampoo.

Let us look at how you need to groom a dog that will make the differences evident.

As the fur is the most important for cat grooming, for dog grooming nail clipping is the most important routine that has to be carried out a couple of times in a month. If you do not clip the nails the dog will start to suffer from infections that grow in the toe nails and these require expensive treatment.

Dog’s nails need to be long enough to reach the ground, but should not be so long that it makes a clicking sound when they walk. Trim a small piece from the end of the nail and keep trimming it until it is short enough. Dogs with dark nails have to be especially taken care of as the quick is difficult to see. Once the quick has been seen, you can use a nail file to smoothen the edges. Do not cut the quick as it leads to bleeding. Use some cotton to stop the flow.
