I have a 6 year old male Shih Tzu. Everytime he goes to the groomer he gets scared and he growls and snaps. I had a groomer before that could deal with him, but I have since moved out of state. I have tried every groomer in the area where I live now, they either wont groom him at all or they call me in mid groom and say “Come get him, I cant work with this dog.” Or they charge me about 100$ over the normal price because they said he acted bad and took up to much of their time. So I have been forced to face the fact I am going to have to do this myself. I bought a dog grooming kit with shears, brushes and clippers. But I am confused about something, do I shave the dog before the bath? Or do I give him a bath, dry him then shave him? Or should I bathe him then shave while his hair is still wet? And please dont tell me this breed does not need to be shaved, I know that, but he just isnt happy when his hair is long. Any info and tips will help alot, thanks!

I’m a groomer of 10 years. Take him to a Vet that offers grooming. Have him stripped down nose to tail every 3 months and let them tranquilize him at first.It will either get better (where the dog is again OK with being handled by a groomer) or worse ( they will need to completely Anastasie the dog)I assume that either you didn’t take him for regular grooming from puppy hood (every 4 to 8 weeks) or he had a bad experience at the groomer.

1. Whether your dog is a long-hair or a short-hair you should brush it regularly. This keeps the dog’s coat from matting and helps ensure a bright, shiny coat.

2. Try to bathe your dog at least once monthly. And if he or she is an outdoor dog, you should probably bathe it even more frequently.

3. When you do bathe your dog, make sure you use a soap or shampoo designed specifically for dogs.

4. Blow drying may be recommended for certain breeds, but the preferred method is to let the dog go outdoors and dry naturally.

5. Wash from the front of the dog to its back and do not apply soap or shampoo to the dog’s face.

6. When you’re brushing or grooming the dog, make sure you feel under its coat for lumps or bumps. If you do find any, you should probably schedule a trip to your vet.

7. Clean the dog’s ears with a cotton ball and try not to get water into them.

8. Another important component of good grooming is to trim the dog’s nails. However, make sure you use a nail trimmer designed for dogs and be careful not to cut the nails so short that they begin to bleed. A good rule of thumb is to just cut the tip of the nail.

9. It is also important to brush the dog’s teeth. If you do this once a week, it will help ensure that the dog does not develop dental problems. Be sure to use toothpaste designed for dogs.

10. In the summer, when fleas are out and about, be sure to purchase a flea brush and use it daily, especially if your dog spends most of its time outdoors.

Two other important things to do when grooming your dog are: first, check the dog’s eyes to make sure they are clear. If you see anything out of the ordinary such as mucus or swelling, get your dog to the vet as it may have developed conjunctivitis.

Second, check the dog’s pads to make sure no stones or thorns have become embedded.

If there is anything that i could do with, it’s something that can catch our German Shepherds hair as it drops, because he seems to be moulting all year round, sometimes it seems excessive. We groom him two or three times every week and each time his brush is overflowing with fur, it seems to get everywhere.

If out of condition then this is a completely different story, you will find masses of dead undercoat hair everywhere. What’s Involved in Dog Grooming?

While dog grooming can be performed at home, the best results can be achieved via a professional dog groomer. A thorough dog grooming session takes care of all the hygienic needs of your dog. The grooming process generally takes a hour or two to accomplish, but the results are well worth the time spent. A typical dog grooming session consists of the following treatments for your dog:

How Often Should Dog Grooming Take Place?

* Short-Coated – Dogs with short dense coats, such as Corgis and Boxers need a weekly brushing, but do not need to be bathed more than once or twice a year unless a problem arises.

* Long-Coated – Long coated dogs, such as Collies and Sheepdogs, require a daily brushing to keep their coats in good condition. Additional dog grooming including regular bathing, should be administered once every other month.

* Silky-Coated – Afghans, Cocker Spaniels and Pekinese dogs belong to the silky coated dog group. These dogs require daily brushing and a thorough dog grooming session four times a year.

* Wire-Coated – Wire coated dogs require considerable dog grooming. Dogs such as Terriers and Schnauzers should be bathed every three months and have their coat clipped every six to eight weeks.

* Smooth-Coated – The smooth-coated class of dogs includes Labrador Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers and Dachshunds. These are very low maintenance dogs and require only weekly brushing and bathing as necessary.

Whatever type of dog you own, it’s important to see that proper grooming is maintained for the health and happiness of your canine companion.

Most people believe that when buying a short haired dog they are getting a pet with little maintenance when the reality is that a short haired breed of dog such as the beagle sheds a lot sometimes year round depending on the climate where you and your beagle make your home. So if you do not want your friends and family to think you have a new designer sofa made from fur then you need to follow a consistent routine of brushing and other required grooming tasks.

The Beagle needs to be bathed only every three to four months; however the ears need to be cleaned weekly, this is especially important in a drop-eared type of dog such as the Beagle. The reason for this is that because of the weight of the ear and the fact that the flap covers the whole ear, very little air gets into the ear canal resulting in an ear that is persistently moist; ideal conditions for an ear infection. Your beagle’s ears can be cleaned by using commercially available dog ear cleaner and several clean cotton balls, place a few drops of ear cleaner on the cotton ball and gently wipe out the ear paying special attention to the crevices. Never insert anything into the ear canal itself or pour ear cleaner directly into the ear. Follow with a clean dry cotton ball until you no longer see dirt on it.

Your beagle’s nails should be checked monthly to see if they need clipping. Dogs that spend enough time walking on hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete need less regular nail trims if at all. If you are not comfortable clipping your beagles nails yourself it is easy enough to drop by a grooming salon or have them done when you are at the vet’s office.

The most time-intensive part of grooming your beagle is going to be brushing. Regular brushing will cut down on the amount of shedding your dog does and it also plays a vital role in keeping your beagle in tip-top condition with a healthy, shiny coat. Keep to a regular brushing schedule with your pet, twice weekly is ideal but once a week is certainly sufficient. You will need a rubber tipped brush such as a Zoom Groom to properly brush your beagle’s coat.Starting at the top of your dog’s head and using short firm strokes brush your beagles coat in the direction of the hair growth. Continue brushing in this manner until there is no more dead and flyaway hair coming off. If this is the first time using a rubber tipped brush on your dog you will be amazed at how much hair you pick up. Enough to make another beagle!

As you can see having a short haired dog does not lessen your responsibilities in the grooming department but without the extra expense of regular haircuts that longer haired dog’s owners incur it is certainly less expensive and very manageable.
