I love my dog so much, but well.. he a lazy bum! and really quite dense! lol Hes had some basic obedience training, and knows how to sit and lay down, come, leave it, and how to roll over (well half way over anyway haha ) Anyway.. hes been shedding like crazy, so we got him one of those deshedding combs which we thought was expensive.. but was totally worth the $ 40! But you see he loves the thing! you comb him once and he sits.. so you try to get him to stand up and then you brush him again and sits.. so i make him stand again.. then you comb him and he sits.. repeat.. repeat.. repeat.. then after doing this a million times he flops and rolls over.. like “oh yeah that’s the spot!” lol my lazy mutt! If he would just stand long enough for me to de fuzz his fuzzy bum we would all be happy! So does anyone have any ideas on how to get this through his thick skull? Ive tried the clicker training the way we did it in class to teach him everything else.. and he goes pretty well, but when that comb comes out, He gets a case of the wiggles that can’t be stopped and his eyes just kinda glaze over in pure delight and nothing works! I’m seriously considering building or buying a grooming table or something, if only my fiance would clean out the garage a bit so we had a place to put it. lol.. anyway, im very open to suggestions on how to get him to stand more while being brushed, without making the grooming process any less enjoyable for him.

Have you taught him a “stand-stay” command? If not, start now. Start with giving him the command when he is already standing. Praise him while he continues to stand. Then release him by giving him another command, and praise that. If he sits or moves without you having released him from the stand-stay, give him the “no reward” marker he already knows from training. Gradually increase the time before you release him. Once he has the duration up, start with distractions – handle his head, back, feet, legs, try to distract him with toys, etc., while he holds the stand-stay, praising him for standing and “no reward”ing him for breaking the stand-stay. Then, once he is solid and has adequate duration, bring out the comb as a distraction. Just touch him with it at first, and slowly work your way up to actually using it on him in the stand-stay.

This way takes a while, but gives you really rock-solid behavior, and should be well worth it in the long run.

Miniature Schnauzers have a striking and unique appearance. Their look, and overall health, is dependant on good dog grooming practices.

Miniature schnauzers have a double coat. This means that they have a soft, short haired coat under a long haired coat. Occasional “haircuts” are required to help keep the coat from matting. What other upkeep is required?

Besides the coat trimming, the dog needs regular baths, nail trimming, tooth brushing and having the anal glands expressed. Some owners enjoy doing the grooming themselves, while others prefer hiring a groomer to do it.

If you decide to use a groomer, visit the groomer before taking the dog. Check for cleanliness and if the groomers are adequately trained. Another consideration is what chemicals or soaps will be used on the dog. Also check the area where your Miniature Schnauzer will be kept before and after grooming.

Like any other business, get referrals and call them. You can also contact the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints.

There are several grooming aids that you’ll need if doing the grooming yourself. These items include clippers, combs, shears, toenail clippers, dog shampoo, conditioner and dog toothpaste. They should all be readily available at the larger pet supply retailers.

Before clipping your pet, take a look at a Schnauzer grooming chart. This will give you an idea of how to get the look that’s associated with this breed of dog.

It’s also important to regularly brush your dog’s coat. If the dog isn’t brushed frequently enough, its coat can become so matted that the mats have to be cut out.

Another, sometime unpleasant, aspect of dog grooming is expressing the anal glands. The anal glands are two small sacs located on either side of the dog’s anus. They secrete a fluid into the feces during the dog’s bowel movement. This fluid produces a scent unique to that dog.

When this fluid isn’t released it begins to thicken and can lead to infection. For the dogs health it’s important that the groomer or vet periodically removes the fluid.

Pet owners need to make sure that all of these aspects of dog grooming are addressed. This will lead to a happier, healthier Miniature Schnauzer.

My girlfriend has just started her dog grooming course she paid 900 for the course it self and then she also had to buy a grooming kit which was 400 so she paid 1300 in total but she really enjoys it and the grooming kit is yours to keep so its a nice start.

The coat of the Irish Red and White Setter is beautiful with it’s long and luxurious fur. However, it does take some maintenance and regular care to keep their coat in excellent condition. Although the breed is an average shedder, the medium length white hair left around on the carpet and furniture often appears to be more than it actually is.

Like most dogs, they do have a heavy, twice a year, seasonal shed. Daily brushing for about a half hour will remove quite a bit of hair. Invest in a good quality dog brush and always brush in the direction of the fur. Your dog will love the attention and you will appreciate a cleaner house.

As the fur is long around the tail and stomach it is prone to collecting twigs and small burrs when they are outside. This is especially true if you take your Setter hunting. Work the burrs out with your fingers as soon as they come in the house, doing so will keep them from becoming embedded in the hair. Should you find that debris is tangled, use blunt tip dog grooming scissors to cut it out being careful not to nick the skin.

Typically, this breed does not require regular clipping of their fur. If you have your dog professionally groomed make sure to tell them only trim around the paws and ears. Once you start clipping the rest of the body, it will change the texture of the fur from soft to coarse.

Since the Setter is bred to be a hunter, spending time outdoors trudging through the woods and lakes, their fur has developed natural oils for protection. Therefore, bathe your Setter as little as possible to retain the natural oils. When you do give your dog a bath, be sure to use only pet specific dog shampoo and conditioner. Human products contain different ingredients that will cause skin irritation on your dogs’ skin. There is some dog shampoos sensitive enough to use more often if would like to bathe your Setter every couple of months.

Once the bath is over it’s time for a full dog grooming session, that is brushing, towel drying, brushing their teeth, and the dreaded nail trimming. If you are like most dog owners this can be a lesson in taxing your patience especially for puppies that just want play and wiggle around or older dogs that prefer to just lie down.
