How Important Is A Dog Crate?
Dog Crate

The much anticipated call from your breeder has comeYour new puppy is ready to go home. Having a dog crate is one of the most important purchases you can make as a dog owner. Aside from speeding up the process of housebreaking and a place to sleep, a dog crate offers a safe haven and the security of a den like feel.

One the first training exercises you will embark on as the proud owner of a new puppy is housebreaking. A can cut that time in half when sized correctly. The crate should be large enough for your dog to stretch out, get up and turn around, but not so large that they can curl up in one corner while leaving three-quarters of the crate empty.

Dogs will not defecate where they sleep or eat and having the right size crate is essential for housebreaking. This does not mean that a new puppy should be expected to hold his business for eight hours when they first come home. Successful housebreaking still takes time as new puppies will need to relieve themselves every half hour for the first week or two so be prepared.

What a dog crate can do for housebreaking is ensure that they will ask to go outside when the time comes instead using their crate or your carpet. Again, this depends on buying the right size crate. Unless you plan to buy a new crate when your dog is fully grown, purchasing a dog crate that can grow with your dog is a great investment.

Life Stage dog crates like the one from Midwest have a moveable panel that is included with the crate that allows pet owners the flexibility of increasing the size of the interior to accommodate your dogs growth. To provide that den like feel use a towel or small blanket placed on the divider so the crate feels the right size for your dog.

For all dogs and especially small dogs, a crate offers a safe haven. Anxiety felt for small dogs living in a lively household is the fear of being trampled. Vets have said many broken bones in small dogs is due to accidentally being stepped on by a family member. A safe haven for your dog means just that, a dog crate is never to be used for punishment. The last thing any pet owner should do is raise their voice, order their dog in their crate, and lock them in. A time-out area is for human children not for your dog.

Because of the crates den like feel they are great for relieving anxiety when traveling. come in a variety of styles from hard plastic to pop-up camping travel crates. Visiting a busy Veterinary office can be a scary experience for a small dog and keeping them safe and secure in a dog crate can ease the tension they feel.

Lastly, a dog crate will keep your pooch out of trouble when they are left home alone. Depending on your breed dogs, mature at different rates. For some maturity arrives by the age of two while others it could be age three. While a dog should spend no more than an eight hour stretch locked in a crate, dog crates offer pet owners the peace of mind that their dog will not tear up the house or injury themselves while off to work or on an errand.

Once old enough you can leave the crate door open so that your dog can come and go as necessary offering you the opportunity to purchase a designer dog crate. These crates resemble a quality piece of furniture such as an end table or nightstand doubling as a dog crate. These are great for adding some style to your home while providing a comfortable house for your dog.

Dog Crate question by IamU: Can using an old plastic dog crate be dangerous even after cleaning?
I bought a used dog crate from good will that was very filthy but plan on washing it. I don’t know if I want to use it for my future puppy. Can that material harbor parasites, fleas ect…
I bought it cause it was a good deal 8$ .

Dog Crate best answer:

Answer by Linda Lee
It can’t habor parasites, but it can harbor parovirus and distemper. I would clean it with bleach very thoroughly and then a good rinse before allowing your puppy to be inside of it. It takes a powerful cleaner, like bleach, to kill parvo and distemper! There are special cleaners for kennels, but they are expensive and you usually have to special order them.

The ugliest dogs

4648814264 c23354a015 m The ugliest dogs

I am the proud owner of a Chinese Crested Dog. Now this breed is often the taker of Ugliest dog awards. I had seen these contests for years and thought them a little quirky and a little mean spirited. Of course beauty is only skin deep and there is no one that I have more respect for than my little Crested, Baxter. Not only is he the bright light in my day, giving me something to look forward to each day after work and school, but he’s the most courageous little guy and he doesn’t even know it.

I received Baxter from a customer at my previous place of employment, a large chain pet supply and dog grooming company. At first when I saw him I thought, that poor little ugly thing is in tatters! He literally had fleas everywhere he has hair (which, by the way is only on his head, feet and tail) his acne was the worst I’d ever seen on a hairless breed.

His owner asked if I could wash him up as she was going to meet with a woman that was considering purchasing him. I said yes, but we needed his proof of rabies, which she didn’t have and had never had him updated on. After bathing the dog, (at the time his name was “Macho Man”, I began kindly lecturing her on the importance of proper heath care and accurate documentation. Afterward she asked me, since I knew so much about caring for a dog, if I would like to have him!

I stammered for a moment and started concocting reasons and excuses why I couldn’t have a dog. Yet hours before I had been looking on-line for Italian Greyhounds. My friend and co-worker looked at me surprised after she had just heard a whole diatribe about how i needed a dog. I stopped and before I could come up with a legitimate reason my friend blurted out: “Yes, she’d love to take him!”

I looked at this silly little dog, so afraid, damp and shifty as we made arrangements for food, and supply exchange. And as I stood there flustered and astounded I realized I had a new dog, he wasn’t the sleek graceful Italian Greyhound that I wanted but he was someone to love. And in the weeks following I came to understand that this strangely mutated breed got a variety of reactions from people, the negative f which I always tried to defend. But one day Baxter looked at me before I began to verbally assault a woman who had out and out called Baxter ugly. and as he looked at me he seemed to say: “It’s okay mommy, their opinion doesn’t bother me, only yours”. I picked him up and gave him a kiss and loudly called him my handsome man.

So if you ever think that your opinion of a dog matters to them, just understand that it doesn’t really bother them unless your someone they love. Then just care about being loved and having fun. Ugly isn’t looks its what you are. And I’ve never met an ugly dog in all my life.

Dog Grooming And Dog Training Made Simple

We may have made our pets dependent of a comfortable life, in which the master takes them out for casual walks and feeds them on command, after having cuddled them behind their giddy ears, but a natural instinct for self-grooming will never be gone, and the proud owner should sustain this instinct. This process is a daily and a weekly one, so dog grooming training is necessary in order to make it easier for the pet and for you too. As funny as a bubble bath may seem to our kids, your furry friend may find it strangely irritating, unless you follow some simple training guidelines to make him go through the ordeal of grooming: from clipping his toenails, brushing his fangs, to smoothing that cute rich fur of his, or sleek glossy hide with a welcomed bath. That is the reason why dog grooming training sessions are required, and the good news is you dont have to have a PhD or a BD for this; you do need some special tools, rewards to motivate the pet and the persistence of your school teacher when telling you about logarithms. The result will be a satisfying one, though, and your dog will be fit to walk on a cat walk!

A Dawdling Process

There are these few main activities that are compulsory when speaking of a dog grooming training session: the brushing of his teeth, the clipping of his nails so as not to scratch that beautiful leather arm chair you just bought or to gather germs that make him prone to diseases and taking care in every possible way of his fur, less or more existent, depending on the breed: the coat of a groomed dog must be glossy, healthy and resistant. In order to do this, you will imminently annoy the dog by touching him in forbidden places: his aggressiveness might be aroused and he may act strangely every time the process recurs. The most important thing is not to hurry up, dawdle here and there, with smooth caresses and sprinkle the dog grooming sessions with several rewards, so that he develop a conditional instinct of pleasure specifically in these times. The first activity is the brushing of his mean fangs, to maintain their health and that of the gums too. The muzzle of the dog is another sensitive area so pat him gently and caress the nose and when he pulls up his lip, you will be able to position the toothbrush. Make him feel good during this by enhancing his self-esteem, speaking to him slowly and soothingly and offering him a reward: you shouldnt be surprised if this training hint will enable you to brush his teeth often and even turn it into a spa for your pet, an enjoyable one.

If you desire to clip the nails, the identical gentle behavior and treats are required, except that you have to touch his paws and to press them to see clearly the nails: it is not a particular pleasant thing for your furry friend so be patient and persistent: the time you are investing in the dog grooming training will be recovered soon, when he will sit calmly every time you want to perform the task a bit faster. The brushing of the pets coat of fur is definitely not that difficult or disagreeable, like brushing his teeth or clipping his toenails, to some extent. However, when delicate areas such as his back end or tail are involved, things have to be taken slow: make him comfortable first, when touching these parts of his body, give him rewards, speak soothingly to him, pat him carefully and in the end he will lighten up and allow you to act there as well: operate with slow strokes of the brush in the back side and at the tail to obtain an ideal grooming where it is genuinely needed.

As it has been said, rewards and persistence are the main ingredients to performing a proper dog grooming training, achieving both a better relationship between you and the dog, and make it a more enjoyable task with the permission of your pet.
