Shaving your pet dog would not only keep your dog clean and neat but would also make them more comfortable. For long-haired dogs, shaving their coat can help prevent heat strokes especially during summer. A lot of dog owners have been wondering how to shave a dog correctly by themselves without having to visit a pet grooming salon. The following are steps on how to shave a dog.

In learning how to shave a dog, choose the right shaver. Although using regular human shavers is okay, they heat up quickly and have the tendency to pull your dog’s hair or fur. Pet shavers are available at different pet shops or even at pet grooming salons.

Place your dog on a table with an overhead. Tie a leash to his collar so that your dog keeps his head up. This can also prevent the dog from jumping off the table. In the absence of an overhead, you can just hold the dog’s collar.

With a #10 blade on the pet shaver, start shaving your dog’s face, being careful not to poke your dog’s eyes. Shave against the body (not doing so might cut your dog’s skin). If your dog starts moving his head, wait until he settles down before continuing on shaving his fur. This is important when learning how to shave a dog.

When done shaving the head, move to shaving his ears. Shaving the outer parts of his ears is as important as shaving the corners of his inner ears. Be careful in shaving this part as your dog might move his head around too much and might cause you to accidentally nick his skin with the shaver.

After shaving the ears, move to his underarms. Lift up his arm and start shaving there. Do the same with the other underarm.

Next stop is the groin area. Lift his leg in the way he does when he goes to pee. Start shaving under the legs. Shaving this part will help in keeping himself clean when doing his business.

Go on shaving your dog’s bottom part as well. Raise his tail and start shaving around his bottom area.

After shaving all these important parts, shave the all the fur from the rest of his body. Before doing so, switch your #10 blade with a larger one. It is best to start from behind the dog’s head, going down to the neck, to his back part, and down on both his sides. Take care when shaving the belly part as this is a very sensitive part.

The above steps would help any dog owner who wants to learn how to shave a dog. Make sure that if your dog gets nervous easily, make him accustomed to the sound of the shaver first before using it on him as it might make him panic too much. Clean and oil your pet shaver regularly to prevent fur from building up. Remember that shaving your dog is not only a grooming essential but is also a good way of bonding with your pet.

Hair Trimming

When you trim a dog’s hair you may need to leash the dog. You will need to brush the hair both before and after trimming it as the brushing removes dead hair and stimulates the growth of new hair. Gently combing the matted hair is important in dog grooming, as matted hair resistant to brushing should be cut off with scissors. To trim a dog’s hair you will need a pair of good dog clippers which can be purchased at the vets or pet shops. The longer the hair though the more trimming it will require especially in the hot seasons.

Bathing

Before you trim your dog’s hair you will need to give them a good bath to remove the debris inside the fur then dry the fur completely before starting the trimming process. During summered you can wash your dog outside with a hose but during the colder months a bathtub is a better option with warm water.

Nail Clipping

It is best to start clipping your dog when they are puppies so that they get accustomed to the process. You need to take extreme care when clipping a dog’s nail especially to avoid the quick from being cut. If you do cut the quick then press on the bleeding area until the wound stops bleeding.

Cleaning Eyes, Ears and Teeth

Don’t forget that the eyes, ears and teeth are an essential part of grooming your dog as well. The dogs ears need to be checked for parasites, dirt and scratches etc. Depending on the dog will depend on what eye care it will require. Some dogs have hair that grow around the eye which needs trimming occasionally other dogs will have weeping eyes that will need to be washed out on a daily basis to avoid infection. The groomer can remove any dirt or foreign matter from the eyes, or from around its corners, with a soft clean cloth. Dogs teeth can be clean by giving your dog bones once a week or using specially designed tooth paste and tooth brush for dogs as well as giving then good dog biscuits.

Brushing and combing your dog should be made into a pleasant ritual. Select a place to do the grooming-a chair, table or bench will be satisfactory. Lift the dog onto the chair or table, talking to him, reassuring him that all is well. Let him know that he’s in for a treat, not an ordeal. Let him sniff each tool; the comb, brush, nail clippers and scissors. It’s very important that he learn to associate these tools with a pleasant experience. Handle the situation with tact and care, and the pup will look forward to it. Botch the job and you will be looking for the pup the next time you bring out the grooming tools.

When brushing the puppy, stroke the brush with and against the lie of the hair. This will help to loosen dead hair and stimulate the skin. Use a brush with the correct bristle length; short for medium- and short-haired dogs, long bristles for long-haired dogs. If you do any combing, use a fine comb for the short-haired dog and a comb with widely spaced teeth for the long-haired, medium-haired and wirehaired dogs. You can bring out the gloss in your dog’s coat by polishing with a flannel cloth or one of the commercial grooming gloves. These grooming gloves are available in pet shops or pet supply stores.

Matted hair

If you have a short- or smooth-haired dog, you will not have to worry about matted hair. But medium- and longhaired dogs do get tangled or matted hair from burs, paint, tar, chewing gum or other sticky or prickly objects. Dried food will also contribute to matted hair, and this is common in puppies and very old dogs. Matted hair is not only unsightly, but it can pinch and irritate the dog.

If the hair is not too snarled, try combing out the mats. Do this gently. Hold the matted hair or tuft in one hand and gently comb it. If it is too tightly matted, you will have to cut it off. Use blunt-end scissors. Puppies are very quick and wriggly, so be careful not to jab your pup with the scissors. There’s very little danger with blunt-end scissors. Gently pull the mat away from the dog’s body, then carefully cut the hair between the skin and the mat or tuft. Avoid pulling or yanking the tuft; it hurts. Tar, paint, and other sticky or gummy matter can be softened with acetone (nail-polish remover) and then combed out.
