Dog Grooming Table question by Mackenzie: Grooming my dog at home?
I have a pair of dog scissors, shampoo and pedi paws/nail clippers. What other tools do I need? Can electric razors used for humans be safe for dogs too? Also, my dog gets very growly and snappy when being groomed so as an extra precaution I was thinking of using a muzzle or muzzle strap. Is there something at home that can be used instead of this? Can his ears be cleaned with cotton balls and water? Do I need to brush his teeth? If so how can I get him used to this? Any tips will be appreciated. I am planning on grooming him outdoors on a folding table as he is small. His hair is medium length sort of like a king charles. Thanks!
Can I get different blades for a human razor if I can’t use the same blades? Cant afford dog razor…
Also, he lets me put my fingers in his mouth but hates having his nails cut which is why I need the muzzle. He dislikes having his paw hair trimmed, around his butt etc.
arabianowner: i am going to buy dog clippers but I was just curious to know if there were different attatchments. I am not a professional but my dog lets me trim his hair with scissors, brush his teeth, etc. I just plan on doing the full haircut and ear cleaning, nail trimming, etc.

you can’t use a human electric razor for dogs, dogs have more hair and sometimes finer/silkier hair and require a different blade. They sell some reasonably priced ones at WalMart. Buy a pin brush, brush out all mats and tangles before using the clippers. bathe him AFTER doing a “rough” cut (less hair to wash/dry), then do a detailed cutting after he’s dry.

Get someone to help you groom him. this person can help by holding him still and giving him tiny treats when he behaves nicely when being groomed.

Ears – cotton ball and an ear cleaning solution (from vet or pet store). water will not break down the gunk that’s there. do this after the bath so you make sure all the water is out and he doesn’t get an infection.

Teeth – brush his teeth and make sure you’re using doggie toothpaste not human. I usually have my dog chew on the bristles while brushing.

Nails – make sure you know where your dog’s quick is so you don’t over cut. oh and buy some Kwik/septic(?) powder just in case you do over cut and need to stop the bleeding.

Buying Dog ClothesIn buying dog clothes there are several things to consider. Clothes for your dog may seem to some, a silly idea, or just something that only women buy to show off their dogs. But for some breeds it is almost mandatory that they be clothed. Those breeds don’t have hair are prone to the elements especially when they are outside. Keeping your hairless dogs warm and protected from the sun is important. Of course you want your dog to look good too and not just have any rag on them. When your hairless dog is in indoors, protecting them from sunburn when the sit in the window of your hose or car is also important. You will want your dog to have quality dog clothes too. Many places sell inexpensive clothes that look good but are not made very well. The material is too thin or rough on your dogs sensitive skin and the thread used in the seams is weak. That causes the seams to come apart in a very short time. The thin material won’t protect your dog from the harmful UV rays either. Then there is fashion. You will want your kids/dogs to look good when they go out and be dressed, as you are, for the occasion. But the clothes must be OK for the dog to wear. I saw a “Funniest Home Videos” show the other day where a dog was dressed in a wedding dress and had gone all over it, getting both the dress and the girl dressing him wet. I don’t think the person that made the dress had much experience in making dog clothes. They have to be made to allow the dog to relieve themselves without getting their outfit soiled. If you are making your own clothes for your dog they are different for male and female dogs. Please take that into account. Clothes can be fashionable and look good on your pup as well, whether you are carrying them or have them on a leash. A stylish dog collar and leash are a must here too.Of course you will want your outfits to be unique, made well and be a great value, and not cost as much as your own outfit. Those are hard to find all in one place so shopping around is definitely worth doing. It wouldn’t seem that buying dog clothes would be anything but just doing a search, finding a site and picking out what strikes your fancy and your pocketbook. But taking into account the quality of the cloths, the fashion, and the uniqueness of them will all add up to a great value. Dachshunds are elegant creatures, their short legs and elongated bodies make them quite a recognizable breed. This dog breed has a wide variety of colors, the most dominant of which is red along with black, tan, chocolate, silver, or cream. They come in one solid color, dappled or a combination of any two or three colors mentioned. Dachshunds come in three coat varieties; short-haired, wire-haired and the long-haired dachshunds. When it comes to dog grooming, the long-haired variety poses the most challenge and requires more special attention from their owners.

Long haired Dachshunds need regularly; they have soft, shiny, slightly wavy hair, which flags at the bottom, creating a dust sweeper effect. They have a fluffy, fine undercoat that is quite prone to shedding. The hair growth in their ears, their paws have thick hair and the undersides of their tail also tend to be longer and create a flag. This can easily get mopped and tangled if not given regular brushing and combing.

Shedding can be controlled by regular brushings once every two days, especially during the warmer months when the amount of hair shed tends to be more than during the winter. During colder months, when the dachshunds

Dog Grooming Tools question by Bubbles: Where to find a small trimming grooming tool for small dogs?
I bought the normal size trimmer for my 8 pound dog and it works great on her body but I need a smaller trimmer for her legs. The video that teaches you how to groom showed a smaller pair of clippers to do the dogs legs and paws. I can’t find a smaller trimmer at Petco or Pet Stuff. Any suggestion on where to look?

When I groom smaller dogs, I will use the clippers on the body and then sweep them gently over the tops of the legs. Then I comb/brush the legs and use shears to just trim the hair to just ‘neaten’ it up. Usually shaving the legs will make the legs look super skinny when compared to the body, if you just trim them it balances the look out. Good luck
