Dog Crates – Essential Tools For Training Your Dog
Dog Crate

One of the essential training tools that you should have when you get a new puppy is a dog crate. This wonderful tool can help teach your puppy self control with regard to going to the bathroom, and it can help your puppy feel safe when he or she is at home alone. Using a dog crate can help make your training efforts much easier and well worth it.

There is and always will be the argument of whether or not a dog crate should be used, but the truth is that it depends on your viewpoint and what you intend to use it for. If you’re using it for and honest effort of training your dog and not using it to simply keep your dog locked up all day long, then a dog crate is perfectly fine. In many cases when the dog is inside the crate, they feel safe and secure, which helps keep them more calm. It may take some time to get to this point as your dog may be a little reluctant to remain in the crate for extended periods of time, but they will get used to it. If you simply allow your dog to run loose all day long, then that just leaves more opportunity for them to get into trouble and behave less appropriately. This will put a damper on any training efforts that you have used already.

]]>

The dog crate creates a cozy environment for your furry little friend that they will enjoy and become used to once they’ve stayed in it for a while. They’ll begin to consider it to be there own little den so to speak and will enjoy the security that they feel while in the crate since it protects them from anything that may try to harm them otherwise.

There are a number of things you can do to make your dog’s stay in the dog crate more enjoyable. For example, you can add a crate bed, or perhaps some of your dog’s favorite toys, or any other items that will help keep him or her entertained and occupied. Once your dog begins to get used to this environment, don’t be surprised if you find him or her bringing items into the crate that are near and dear to them. It is not uncommon for dogs to store away their favorite items in those places which they spend the most time.

What type of dog crate is perfect for your dog? There are number of different types that you can choose from, and the best one really depends on your dog and the environment that they’ll be staying in. The first thing to remember is to get the right size. You don’t want your pet to stay in something that is too small because that would be uncomfortable. Make sure that they have plenty of room to move around in the cage, they should be able to stand freely and move around in the crate without constraint. If you want a crate that has a little more strength and security, then a wire dog crate would be the answer. Otherwise there are also soft dog crates that can serve the same purpose but with a little more comfortable feel.

Pros and Cons of Wire General Cage Dog Crates
Dog Crate

In 1964 there was a manufacturing company in Indiana called Monticello Manufacturing, they made square, wire mesh trash burners. One of their customers was using and selling these as a cage to hold puppies. Now, unlike today, the pet trade was practically nonexistent. But, as a forward thinking company, they saw the opportunity and formed a spin off company called General Cage and started making wire dog crates. In the last 40 years, their product line has expanded, but lets take a detailed look at the pros and cons of the original wire General Cage dog crates.

They allow your dog to see what is going on around them. This can either qualify as a pro or a con, depending on your dog. Your dog may normally have the run of the house, but sometimes he needs to be put in his crate. A wire General Cage dog crate allows your dog to feel more like a part of what is going on in your home because he can see what is going on around him.

Wire crates are well ventilated, this can be especially important if you live in a warmer climate or if your dog has a longer coat. It allows plenty of air flow for your dog to stay cool.

Wire crates are collapsable for easy storage, and can be broken down quickly and conveniently.

]]>

They are easy to clean with their slide out tray. If your puppy does have an accident, the wire bottom keeps your puppy out of his mess. Being well ventilated, General cage dog crates allow any obnoxious odors to escape.

One of the things that I really like about our wire dog crate is that it has two doors, one on the side and one on the front. Mostly we use the front door, but there have been times when traveling when only the side door has been accessible.

Last, many General Cage dog crates offer dividers. A divider can be used to keep two dogs separated without getting a second kennel, or are great if you have a puppy that will grow to be a large dog. It saves you money by only having to buy one crate that will last your puppies growing spurt. A small puppy in too large of a crate removes one of the benefits of crates in general – allowing your dog to feel secure with a den like environment. This problem is overcome with a divider panel that can be adjusted as your puppy grows.

If your dog has a tendency to whine or bark, then a wire crate can accentuate the problem because he can see what is going on around him but he cannot join in the fun. Sometimes this problem can be solved with a cover or a chew toy.

Wire General Cage dog crates offer less insulation than a plastic crate, this can be bad for smaller dogs or puppies, or if you live in a colder climate.

They are not airline approved, so if you travel, you will need a second crate.

Another bad thing if you travel or have to move the crate often is that they are heavier than plastic crates, especially if you have a large dog.

It is funny how an advantage for one person, can be a disadvantage for another, depending upon circumstances such as where you live, the breed of dog or even your dogs personality. We have a wire dog crate, and it works great for our dog and lifestyle. But if a wire crate does not fit your needs, remember that General Cage dog crates come in other styles as well. The one thing I do know, is that a crate trained dog makes for a happier dog and dog owner!

Dog Crates ? The Perfect Training Tool
Dog Crate

Unfortunately, some people think that using as a training tool is cruel when in fact, multiple studies have been conducted that show of all methods used for things such as housebreaking, crates are the safest and most effective solution. While every person is entitled to an opinion, we wanted to offer some insight that might help clear up some of the confusion or concern.

to help with training are split. One group consists of animal lovers who believe that placing a dog in a crate seems more like punishment than training. This group of individuals feels that this form of training should be used as a last resort and some feel crate training does more harm than good. The other group of dog lovers understand that a new puppy must be housebroken, which means roaming free is not an option. To these people, using crates or kennels is safe and humane.

Regardless of the breed, all puppies are curious. Even if you were to turn your back for a minute, you can be sure the puppy will get into something. In addition to chewed corners of furniture, tipped over trashcans, and socks strewn about, puppies also have accidents. Obviously, allowing a new puppy to wander around the house while leaving little gifts is not a viable option. In addition to damage being done to the flooring and furniture, a puppy without supervision would be subjected to danger.

you know to expect accidents. Some dogs choose just one or two areas of the home for business while others simply squat and go wherever they are when the urge hits. Then, some puppies, as well as older dogs tinkle when stimulated or excited. When you think about the training aspect of housebreaking coupled with potential danger of your pet chewing on anything he could get in his mouth, it is easy to see the safety value associated with dog crates.

]]>

Rather than view a crate or kennel as prison, think of this as a private, comfortable, and safe space used for training purposes. Keep in mind that initially, a puppy will have accidents inside the crate, which is perfectly normal. After all, when young, bladder control is not possible. Therefore, the bottom of the crate would need to be lined with material that could easily be tossed out. It is also important to understand that for training of this kind to work, the crate or kennel should only be used for short periods.

rather than be left in that space all day while you work, he would learn to appreciate the space instead of fear it. Therefore, as a part of training, you want to make the crate a happy and positive space for the puppy to enjoy. Dog experts agree that using a crate or kennel for punishment would have negative effects on the goal you are trying to achieve. Instead, you want the puppy to connect safety and comfort with the space.

If you have ever read National Geographic or watched documentaries on television about dogs in the wild, you know that mothers build dens where pups are safely kept until old enough to venture out. This is natural behavior so introducing your puppy early would be best. One of the keys to dog crates being a successful training tool is to place the crate in a quiet and comfortable room of the home. You also want to have the crate near a door to the outside so you can get your puppy out immediately after opening the door. It would also be important to have the crate positioned so the puppy can see goings on in the home.

, it is common to see dogs choose to make this space the bed. In other words, rather than sleep on an actual dog bed, your dog might feel safer and more comfortable inside his private “den.” Of course, you want to purchase a crate or kennel that offers enough room for your dog to stand up and move about. Sometimes, a puppy will do better in a small crate so as he grows, you would need to invest in a larger crate to accommodate.

The market is flooded with all kinds of design options, as well as sizes, materials, and features. Some of the newer plastic crates are made to withstand abuse such as chewing but if you have a dog that will not grow much and you plan to use the crate for both training and a bed, you may want to consider one made from metal. Although not as fancy, metal crates last a long time while still being affordable. As you can see, crates are not the enemy as long as training is done right.

How to Choose the Right Dog Crates and Kennels for your Dog
Dog Crate

If you want to provide your pets with comfortable, safe and nice place to rest, you can turn to dog crates and kennels. These small structures come in different sizes, shapes and differ in materials used. Choosing one for your pet can become an overwhelming experience if you don’t know how to choose one. Below are some tips to help you out. Dog’s Size or Breed

You may have already noticed that dog crates and kennels come in different sizes. The reason for this is, obviously, to accommodate the different types of dogs. When selecting dog crates, the very first thing that you have to consider is your dog’s size and breed. There should be enough space for your dog to move around inside the structure. If you’re buying one for a puppy, you must estimate its adult size.

dogs weighing up to 25lbs. (Jack Russel Terrier or Chihuahua): 24-inch dog kennels or, dogs weighing between 26-40lbs. (Dachshund or American Pit Bull Terrier): 30-inch dog kennels or, dogs weighing between 41-70lbs. (Cocker Spaniel or Bassett Hound): 36-inch dog kennels or, dogs weighing between 71-90lbs. (Irish Setter or Dalmatian): 42-inch dog kennels or, dogs weighing between 91-110lbs. (Rottweiler or German Shepherd): 48-inch dog kennels or, dogs weighing over 110lbs. (St. Bernard or Great Dane): 54-inch dog kennels or crates

]]>

Frequency of Use

Most of the time, dog crates are placed outdoors. Some dog owners prefer that their dog stays in dog crates and kennels most of the time while some just prefer that their pet stays in these structures during the night. So make sure that these structures are sturdy enough and can withstand harsh weather, such as rain or storm, and should still be able to provide your dog with comfort, safety and protection during times like these. If you travel a lot, choose dog crates that have added safety features such as padded sides and covers, and also make sure that there is window for ventilation.

Types of Dog Crates

One type of dog crate is the solid plastic crate, which is ideal if you travel a lot. They are safer compared to the other types of dog crates however, they cannot be folded and they take up a lot of space.

Another type is the aluminum crate, which can either be folding or fixed. Aluminum crates are light weight, will not rust and they allow for excellent vision and airflow for the dog. Compared to the wire crates, they look more appealing and can be very sturdy when constructed with appropriate bracing.

Wire crates are relatively heavy, which makes it difficult to be folded for transport or storage. But the good thing about this type of crate is that it looks cleaner and provides more airflow for the dog.

Soft crates are light weight and can easily be folded for transport and storage. Aside from providing the dog with a stronger sense of security, these crates also allow for better airflow and visibility.

Choosing the right dog crates and kennels can be a bit tricky. But with these tips in mind, you are bound to find one that is just right for your beloved pet.
