Shaving your pet dog would not only keep your dog clean and neat but would also make them more comfortable. For long-haired dogs, shaving their coat can help prevent heat strokes especially during summer. A lot of dog owners have been wondering how to shave a dog correctly by themselves without having to visit a pet grooming salon. The following are steps on how to shave a dog.

In learning how to shave a dog, choose the right shaver. Although using regular human shavers is okay, they heat up quickly and have the tendency to pull your dog’s hair or fur. Pet shavers are available at different pet shops or even at pet grooming salons.

Place your dog on a table with an overhead. Tie a leash to his collar so that your dog keeps his head up. This can also prevent the dog from jumping off the table. In the absence of an overhead, you can just hold the dog’s collar.

With a #10 blade on the pet shaver, start shaving your dog’s face, being careful not to poke your dog’s eyes. Shave against the body (not doing so might cut your dog’s skin). If your dog starts moving his head, wait until he settles down before continuing on shaving his fur. This is important when learning how to shave a dog.

When done shaving the head, move to shaving his ears. Shaving the outer parts of his ears is as important as shaving the corners of his inner ears. Be careful in shaving this part as your dog might move his head around too much and might cause you to accidentally nick his skin with the shaver.

After shaving the ears, move to his underarms. Lift up his arm and start shaving there. Do the same with the other underarm.

Next stop is the groin area. Lift his leg in the way he does when he goes to pee. Start shaving under the legs. Shaving this part will help in keeping himself clean when doing his business.

Go on shaving your dog’s bottom part as well. Raise his tail and start shaving around his bottom area.

After shaving all these important parts, shave the all the fur from the rest of his body. Before doing so, switch your #10 blade with a larger one. It is best to start from behind the dog’s head, going down to the neck, to his back part, and down on both his sides. Take care when shaving the belly part as this is a very sensitive part.

The above steps would help any dog owner who wants to learn how to shave a dog. Make sure that if your dog gets nervous easily, make him accustomed to the sound of the shaver first before using it on him as it might make him panic too much. Clean and oil your pet shaver regularly to prevent fur from building up. Remember that shaving your dog is not only a grooming essential but is also a good way of bonding with your pet.

Clipping the hair of your dog is just as essential as it is to wash it. Some dog owners tend to shy away from this task for one reason or other. This may be based on past experiences or an attitude that makes hair clipping simply a peripheral activity. We will look at hair clipping here in general and hopefully, you will benefit from a few tips.

The first step is to get all the equipment and supplies that you will need to carry out an effective procedure. One of such equipment is a grooming table which is designed specifically for these kinds of tasks. The table can be adjusted to a height of your choice and has a leash to fasten the dog and minimize its movements while you clip. Place your dog in the middle of table and let is lie or stand. Once it has been fastened, clipping may start.

Start by clipping the body parts that are less sensitive such as the back or sides. This helps your hand gets used to the clipping while also helping relax the dog. Clip away leaving a narrow layer of hair on the dog’s body. Strive to clip evenly across the whole body. Certain parts will be sensitive and harder to clip such as between legs and so on. These will require the dog to be calmer. Fortunately, the clippers in today’s markets are fairly safe to use and will be adjusted to any height you want.

As you clip, use the opportunity to also conduct a physical examination for any swollen areas or cuts so that you may attend to them. When done well, this massage will help the dog stay calm. If cuts exist, you will need to clean with sterile material and cover it up. Be careful not to clip hair into wounds since these may carry germs.

The size and type of dog has influence on the type of clipper you want to use. A small dog will probably need only a medium duty clipper but a large dog may do well with a heavy duty clipper. Heavy duty clippers have high speeds and are suitable when you want to do a lot of clipping quickly. If you are new to dog clipping you should start with lighter clippers before switching to heavy duty.

Since there will be a lot of hair after you clip, you should determine in advance how you will handle this. Small children should not be nearby when you clip. They might try eating the hair and this can be very dangerous. Work where is easy to collect after you clip. If you are doing it outdoors, you should determine in advance the wind directions to minimize the fur or hair that will be blown into your face or clothes.

Finally, create sufficient time to clip your dog’s hair as part of the grooming routine. If you are hard pressed for time, you can use professional people to do this for you. The best way to create time usually is to have a regular schedule for clipping.

Dog Grooming Tools question by Bubbles: Where to find a small trimming grooming tool for small dogs?
I bought the normal size trimmer for my 8 pound dog and it works great on her body but I need a smaller trimmer for her legs. The video that teaches you how to groom showed a smaller pair of clippers to do the dogs legs and paws. I can’t find a smaller trimmer at Petco or Pet Stuff. Any suggestion on where to look?

When I groom smaller dogs, I will use the clippers on the body and then sweep them gently over the tops of the legs. Then I comb/brush the legs and use shears to just trim the hair to just ‘neaten’ it up. Usually shaving the legs will make the legs look super skinny when compared to the body, if you just trim them it balances the look out. Good luck

Dog Grooming Tools question by hlhindle70: How do I get my dog to enjoy being groomed?
My dog has a medium-length coat that seems to mat rather than shed. I’ve tried different kinds of grooming tools and giving her treats, but she does not like being groomed. I assume that it is uncomfortable for her because she is a good-natured girl and always tries to do what I want.
Is there a particular brush or tool that won’t cause discomfort? Or something I can put on her coat to make it easier to brush? Anything else you can suggest?
She is such a sweetheart I hate to do something to her she doesn’t like.
My dog is a German shepherd mix. The black parts of her coat are coarse and glossy and don’t mat/ The tan parts are soft and fuzzy and want to mat. The tan parts are on her legs and rear, where she is most likely to get dirty.
She never whines when she’s brushed. She will just lick my hand to let me know she doesn’t like it and she will leave if I let her. I give her treats or even a nice bone to distract her before she starts to get antsy.
Any suggestion on a good detangling conditioner for dogs? Or do people conditioners work well?
Do groomers mind working with dogs that have never been professionally groomed and want to get away?
My dog loves people and isn’t aggressive, she just would probably really not want to be there and she’s a medium-sized dog.

I have a yorkie and I know how hard grooming can be for both the lovely pup adn for the owner. I did some research of the groomers in my area and just found one that wokred with Toby until he was comfortable going. Now when I say “groomers”, he wags his tail! i know this doesn’t help unless you live in san diego. But you might find someone like that in your area! Good Luck

Help me figure out what these dog grooming tools are for!

A couple of months+ ago we adopted two adorable pomeranians.. their owner has since passed away and it was her wish that her boys would get a nice home. They have become a part of our family pronto, I am happy to say. The owner gave us everything, which included some of the grooming tools I am confused about. Some of these look a bit serious! Any help is appreciated

To be honest, it doesn’t really affect the training of the dog in the but many owners like to do it this way, nonetheless.
