7 Reasons To Get Better at Grooming

Article by Tristan Andrews

Grooming your dog is an essential part of dog ownership. Many people are familiar with the basics such as removing tangles and shampooing for a great, clean shine. It’s worth looking further into the world of dog grooming because there are many benefits you may not have considered before.

The first thing to realize is that grooming is not just for improving the look of your dog’s coat. There are also many health benefits if you groom regularly. You’ll want to start right away because:

1. Grooming will take away dead hair and skin. This will not only remove an unsightly and unwanted mess, it will also improve that air circulation to your dog’s coat. This is essential in the summertime when it’s hot and humid.

2. You’ll also find that grooming increases the blood flow to hair follicles. In turn, this will improve the health of your dog’s whole coat.

3. Grooming also stimulates the lymphatic system, which is similar to the results a human would get from a deep tissue massage.

4. Another benefit of grooming is that it will put your dog in a great mood. Combine this with your gentle voice and you’ll be helping to strengthen the bond that is between you.

5. A benefit that many people don’t think about is that you will become more familiar with your dog’s body while grooming. That means you will be able to detect many health problems that might occur.

6. You may find ticks or other insects that are attached to your dog. These can be very deadly so keep an eye out for them.

7. While you are grooming your pet you will also want to clip their nails. This will give you a chance to check the pads of their feet to see if there are any problems.

If you don’t have the essential grooming materials you can certainly find them at your local pet supply stores. If you would rather shop online there are many stores that offer the equipment for sale as well. As an added bonus you will also find a lot of great information and advice on the web.

For those who want to know more, your local community college may offer a program to teach dog owners how to groom. Dog clubs and other dog related groups might offer training as well.

If you move beyond the basics and become an excellent groomer you might even want to think about starting your own service. There are many pet owners who don’t have the time and know-how to groom their dogs themselves, but know it is a necessity. Turn their ignorance into dollars as you groom others’ pets part time or even full time.

Even if you don’t opt to start your own service you will be able to rest assured that your own dog is being properly cared for. There are obviously many rewards that go hand in hand with grooming, so start as soon as possible.

Tips on mini pincher grooming

4600248148 3de4d9554d m Tips on mini pincher grooming

Miniature Pinschers normally have short hair so they do not need to be groomed as often as other dog breeds. The one problem that people usually have with Miniature Pinschers are that they shed quite a bit. You end up with short but corse hairs all over the place and most Miniature Pinschers are black, so you have short black corse hair everywhere! It can become pretty overwhelming after a while if you do not know how to properly groom them. The best way to keep this potential mess at bay is to give your miniature Pinscher a bath with a desheeding shampoo. YOu need to make sure that you work it well into the hair and skin so that the undercoat is penetrated and you are able to get the most hair that will be faling out out before rinsing. This is one of the best ways to to keep them groomed because they are less likely to need major grooming as time goes by. The other item that I would suggest for you to get is a grooming glove. The combs are good to, but are usually for dog breeds with longer and thinner hair. The glove allows you to pet the dog or animal and get the excess fur instead of having to keep them still and rake a comb through their fur. Plus, the brisalls on the gloves are usually short and they will not cause harm to the skin as would a long bristalled comb. These 2 things are probably the best 2 items you can get for a Miniature Pinscher to keep them groomed. They don’t really need much more than that!

Some Miniature Pinschers have major issues with heir skin. Some have really bad dandruff while others may have what they call mange, which is caused by tiny mites on and under the skin. If your Miniature Pinscher have Dandruff, there are Shampoos out there especially made to fight dandruff, some say that oatmeal shampoo is one of the best you can give them and would be used in the place of your normal dog shampoo. After a few washings you should notice a reduction in the amount of dandruff that you see. If you suspect that your Miniature Pinscher has mange, you should go to the vet and have them examined. The vet should be able to tell you whether they do or not. If they do, you can get treatments that you put on the skin to kill the mites that cause the mange. The amount of time it takes to cure depends or the severity of the situation, but should not take long!

There maybe other problems that may cause your miniature Pinscher to smell even after freshly grooming and although it may be mange, you should have any other problems that you see looked at by your local vet. They would be able to tell you every thing that you need to know and may be able to work you through the process to fix the problem!

How to treat red tear stains in dogs

2257913999 54a79f8ce5 m How to treat red tear stains in dogs

One of the most frequent questions that I am asked as a groomer is how to prevent tear stains under their dogs eyes. There is nothing that spoils a dog’s cute expression more than dark red tear stains under their eyes and around their mouth. These stains can be prevented and cured.

There are several reasons why tears cause staining. The most common is that when the hair and skin is wet it causes a low grade bacterial infection or a red yeast infection. Other causes could be a blocked tear duct, ear infections, genetics, allergies, food and possibly the water they drink.

There are several methods of curing tear staining and you may have to experiment a bit with what works for your dog. Remember when trying any of these that the results may not be immediately visible. It takes time for the tearing to slow and for the stained hair to grow out.

Probably the best way to prevent and cure tear stains is with a trip to your vet. A low dosage of tetracycline for about 2 weeks has been found to be very effective at curing tear staining that is due to bacterial or yeast infection but your vet will be able to make the proper diagnosis and recommend treatment. They will also be able to determine if the staining is caused by a blocked or closed tear duct that might require surgery.

In addition to whatever method your veterinarian suggests, you can help the process along by following these steps daily. Make sure that your dog’s hair is not sticking up or falling into the eye and irritating it. Trim the hair or pull it up in a top knot. Then take a cotton ball and putting a drop or two of regular Visine on it. Gently rub under the eye on the stain. This will help to dry the area as well as neutralize stains themselves. Once you have the area clean and dry, you can take a tiny amount of petroleum jelly and smooth the hair down and out of the eye.

If your dog has staining around the mouth, you may want to make sure that your dog food does not have artificial coloring in it. Many dog foods have coloring that will cause staining. Also make sure that you are using stainless steel food and water bowls. Plastic bowls or cracked or chipped ceramic bowls can harbor the bacteria that cause staining around the mouth. Adding a little vinegar (1 tsp per quart) can help to change the ph balance and eliminate some staining. It takes a little effort to get your dog to actually drink this so start small with tsp per quart and work up slowly to 1 tsp.

There are many commercial products on the market that claim to reduce or eliminate tear stains such as Angel Eyes. I have heard various reports of whether they work fabulously well or not at all. I think that results with them are probably determined by what the cause of the eye stains is. Others simply bleach out the stains and do nothing to actually help prevent them. Just like bleaching your own hair, repeated use of bleach is going to dry the hair out and cause breakage.

Your groomer will trim the stained hair away from the eye as well as trimming any hair that might be falling into the eye. With regular grooming, this will keep tear staining to a minimum but removing the hair is only a temporary cure at best. Eliminating the cause along with good grooming is the way to keep your dog looking its best and healthiest.

Great Dane grooming – Part 1

4599646209 82149209ca m Great Dane grooming Part 1

The gentle giant, majestic, proud, loyal and friendly all describe the Great Dane. Great Dane’s are truly a joy to have as pets. They love people, are easy going and easy to care for. These massive creatures require little in the way of grooming. Your Great Dane will reward the time you spend on grooming them with more love and devotion than you could have imagined.

Great Dane’s are a short haired breed so their coat requires little maintenance. They do shed but it is far less than longer haired breeds. Maintaining their coat requires only a simple brushing. Some recommend a daily brushing but every few days will work just as well. The Great Dane usually enjoys this time because of the physical contact with their owner. Brushing with a firm bristle or body brush will help to loosen dirt and dead hairs and help keep the coat shiny and smooth.

Bathing a Great Dane can be quite a challenge given their size. Fortunately Great Danes should not be bathed very often due to their affinity for dry skin. Bathing too often will strip their coats of essential oils necessary for healthy hair and skin. When you do bathe a Great Dane, do not use human shampoo as this will irritate their skin and leave them with a dry itchy coat. A dry shampoo works well for Great Danes and is a lot easier on the owner.

Cleaning a Great Dane’s ears is an important part of the weekly grooming. Special cleansers are available but Tree Tea Oil works well too. Once a week squirt a little of the cleanser down into the ear canal then gently massage the area just below the ears for a minute or so. Most dogs will shake as soon as you are done massaging so be prepared because some of the cleanser will escape the ear canal. After massaging, take a soft cloth and gently wipe the inside of the ear and down into the canal to remove dirt and debris. Cleaning the ears weekly will reduce the risk of infection and because you are watching the ears regularly, you will immediately notice if redness or irritation is present.

Taking care of the Great Dane’s teeth is simple and will reduce the chances of developing tooth or gum disease. You can literally brush your dog’s teeth but it is much simpler to give him a bone 2 or 3 times a week. The action of gnawing on the bone helps to scour the teeth removing plaque and tarter build up. If you do not want to give your dog raw bones then brushing the teeth is really the only way you can ensure the dental health of your dog.

The final aspect
