Want To Start With Dog Shows? Show Small Dogs!

Article by Blake Kritzberg

The lights, the ring, the glamour! Ever think you might like to become involved with showing dogs? If so, then starting with “toy” or small dogs can offer a great way to enter into this hobby with fewer demands on your time and space than a larger breed might involve.

The purpose of a dog show is to compare all entered dogs of a specific breed against a pre-established, written breed standard of perfection. The winners, or Best of Breed dogs, then compete against each other for Best in Group within one of the seven basic groups to which their breed has been assigned (the Herding Group, Hound Group, Non-Sporting Group, Sporting Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group or Working Group). The winner of each group then goes on to compete for the coveted Best In Show title and hopefully, earn more points toward a Championship.

As a new entrant to the world of dog shows, you’ll find there are advantages to showing small dogs over larger dogs.

Sitting Pretty

First, small show dogs generally take less time and effort to bathe and blow dry before a show. You may think this detail almost inconsequential, but after you attend a number of shows it becomes more important. Small show dogs are also easier to lift in and out of a tub, and require less water, soap and conditioner. With the exception of long-coated breeds, less dog equals less hair, which equals less drying time. As a result, it’s possible to thoroughly bathe and groom six toy-sized show dogs, like Chihuahuas, in the time it takes to groom one large Standard Poodle show dog!

Git Along, Little Doggies

Secondly, showing small or toy dogs means you can show more dogs because they take up far less space. Each small show dog requires a small traveling crate, but crates of that size are light to transport and simple to store. Small show dogs also require the use of grooming tables, but as long as they get along, two small show dogs can share one table.

Easy Does It

The third factor is, showing small dogs requires less physicality on the part of the person handling them. You’ll seldom see small show dog handlers huffing and puffing as they race around the ring. Instead, small show dogs work harder to cover ground and keep up with the handler, whereas large show dogs cover ground in great strides, requiring the handler to work to keep up. In addition, “setting up” a small dog for viewing is a simple physical task, whereas a larger dog can involve much more effort.

As you can see, showing small dogs enjoys a bit of an advantage over showing large dogs. As a result, you may find that showing small dogs makes a very rewarding start to a downright addictive hobby that you and your mini champ can enjoy together for years.

Dog Grooming Table question by Negativ: How much did it cost you to start your own grooming salon?
I just got a job as a bather at the Petsmart grooming salon. They are sending me to their “grooming academy” in February. I was just wondering how much it would cost to start my own grooming salon? Maybe in my house – or maybe if I found the right building to buy, I’d have a business. I live in South Dakota. The groomer that I take my dog to now works out of her house – it’s really clean and nice!

So, the clippers I’d need, dryers, cages, grooming table, etc.

Anyone reading this actually a groomer? Anything you can tell me about the job? I’ve always liked giving my dog baths, giving my parents dogs baths and cutting their hair. icon smile Precision Pet Professional Series Grooming Table with Arm Clamp and Noose, 36X24X30 I’m really excited to start my new job!

Giving a dog a bath is much different then actually grooming. Are youw illing to do the gross stuff? Anal glads, ears so full of stuff you want to die fromt he smell? Dogs pooing peeing on you, throwing up on you? clippers, grooming table, nooses ect are all small things right now, you need to look in the long run for this. going to a school like petsmart is not going to make you a groomer in a few months, it takes YEARS of practice and patentice to et to being your own boss. You need clientele, clippers alone will un you hundreds of bucks, so do scissors, hair dryers. then cages tables ect. are you going to use your own house? water bills, electricity is used SO much while grooming. If you rent out a place, as you willing to pay for any alterations to the place as needed (a all bath tub ect)?, will they cover the bills for water hydro ect? it takes alot and many years to get to where you can run your own place. the lady I work under has been doing grooming for 10 years, on her own only 4 of those years. You need a good mentor. if you are serious about doing this. find a good doggy salaon, get out of petsmart, and get in to a real salon one who will help you learn and not just be funded by a large franchise.

He really does not like his feet touched, but he is getting much better. I put my dogs on my lap because they are so small, but if you had a large dog you could sit them on the floor or grooming table and do the same thing. always try to Scoop out the hair you never just jab the clipper straight into the paw or you could cut the dog. I do this usually at least once a month on my dogs. I’m sorry if I sound stupid. The only areas I shave on my poms (unelss there is a disaster) is their pads of their feet, and around their private areas so they dont get mats or pee & poo stuck to them.

Dog Grooming Table question by TwistedxKiss: Any ideas on how to handle grooming for a grumpy old dog?
I have a 15 year old affenpinscher. His health is not perfect, but well managed between my family and our vet. However, he has developed the habit of biting anyone who touches him when he would rather not be bothered. He was never a biter before, and even in his teething stages NEVER bit my mother. We’ve checked it over with the vet and he is not in pain, the theory is that he’s just old and crabby and being stubborn. Affenpinschers are very stubborn dogs and he is well over his life expectancy, so that seems feasible to me.

The problem is that his groomer told us not to bring him anymore. He has always been a bit bad at the groomer, I expect he probably wasn’t socialized very well. (I am only 5 years older than him, so it wasn’t my responsibility to ensure this. Spare me the lecture, I’ve already given it to my parents. icon razz Aosom Portable Folding Pet Dog Cat Grooming Table w/ Wheels ) Apparently he slipped out of the little leash thing and nearly fell off the table, and when someone grabbed him to catch him he actually tore flesh from their thumb, as well as biting two other people during the appointment. So they told us that he’s just too old and badly behaved for them to handle safely anymore, and to get him groomed at the vet’s instead where he will be safer. But our vet doesn’t groom, and the only one in the area that does, our neighbor’s dog came home from with a broken leg that they neglected to explain. So my dear Max will not be going anywhere near there.

His hair grows way too long and causes him problems, so not grooming him is not an option.

Does anybody have any ideas of how to handle this? I am at a loss. If he’d let me I’d just trim up his face by myself, he’s too old for vanity at this point, but I’m afraid he’d fidget and I’d accidentally cut him or something. He isn’t cut very close to his eyes, it’s mostly hair on top of his head that hangs down, but I don’t want to risk it.
NOTE: The biting is NOT a constant thing. He is only nippy in the late evening when he starts to get sleepy and ought to be left alone anyway, and when he knows his insulin is coming soon (or grooming, apparently.) 95% of the time he is perfectly well behaved, playful, and affectionate. I don’t want anyone to think that he’s completely vicious. While unacceptable either way, the behavior is only during specific isolated circumstances, and he behaves normally otherwise.
The biting isn’t all that offended the groomers. They are concerned that he slipped out of the leash and almost fell off the table. They are afraid he will get hurt as well. So a muzzle and the groomer won’t work, and if AT ALL possible, I’d like to avoid stressing him out that much due to his age.
The reason why his face MUST be maintained is because he was born with some sort of eye condition that causes them to not produce enough moisture, and so his eyes get all goopy and gross. He has medicated drops and drops for moisture, and we clean out his eyes daily, so we do keep on it. But when his hair is long, his eyes could goop up during the night and make the hair crust his eyes shut. When he’s being groomed regularly there is no problem, but now we are having serious troubles.

And he has hair growing out between his pads that is making him slip on the kitchen floor, too. icon sad Aosom Portable Folding Pet Dog Cat Grooming Table w/ Wheels
I am familiar with Acepromazine. The vet says that sedating him at his age is out of the question.

Big Hairy Dog’s Bath Time!

Article by Andrew Dillon

I used to own a Boarder Collie and he was one hairy dog and I can tell you giving a large dog a bath will not always be an easy task but in the end you will have a much cleaner dog that will be a joy to have in your household!

You see big hairy dogs tend to smell more than little dogs especially if they have been out for a walk and decided to jump in the local swamp for a paddle.

grooming table or picnic table if possible a big dog harness for the dog hose with water that is mixed warm and cold spray nozzle on hose ice cream bucket for the water if you don’t have a hosedog shampoobucket for mixing up shampoo dog conditioner eye wash or plain saline eye dropsscissorssteel-toothed comb wire pin brush baby wipes paper towel woolly large terry cloth towel one or two assistants dog treats dog crate or enclosed space blanketfan

1. Put the harness on the dog first of all.

2. Get the dog up onto the grooming table. Have the assistant there to hold the dog and give it an occasional treat. Or as mentioned above you can groom and wash your dog outside with a gardening hose. Whatever is easier for you.

3. Turn on the water and check to see that it is “tepid” (the same temperature as your own skin is ideal).

4. Turn the spray nozzle to mist setting or use a sprinkler on your hose.

5. Place the nozzle directly onto the dog’s coat, starting at the top of the head and completely wet the dog down from head to tail.

6. Pour the shampoo into a bucket and add water so that it is sudsy. Or if washing outside place shampoo directly on to your dog.

7. Starting at the dog’s head, suds the dog all over, using your hands and pouring the suds out of the bucket when needed. Or rub the shampoo into the dogs coat until you have a well lathered dog.

8. Once the dog is all suds, then rinse the suds out of the coat well making sure not to leave any soap residue.

9. Pour the dog hair conditioner into your hand and massage into the dog’s coat thoroughly. This is a vital part of grooming and washing your dog so you need to make sure you do it correctly and thoroughly

10. Once again rinse the dog all over thoroughly

11. Dry the dog all over with the woolly towel and then the dog dryer if you have one, or just do what I do and use a normal hand held one. But a word of warning please don’t have it too hot that it will burn your dog.

12. Put the blanket into the crate or an enclosed space or just let your dog loose in the garden on a patio area but not the lawn or near any soil as it will mean having to re-bath your dog, it is up to you.

13. If you have decided to use a crate or enclosed space then you need to put the dog into the crate or enclosed space.

14. If you have decided to use a crate or enclosed space then you need to turn on the fan on medium so that it blows on the dog dry.

If you don’t have warm water in your hose (mixed) then use a bucket with the water in it to pour over the dog.Massage the suds into the coat well and leave set the required amount of time if it is a flea shampoo.

Using the conditioner will help to keep cocklebur’s and sticks and things from sticking in your dog’s coat.

Using the harness makes it easy for your assistant to hold onto the dog.

It is perfectly ok to use the soap and water in the dog’s ears, it will help to flush out grime and hardened wax.

Absolutely do NOT use cold water straight from the tap! It is too cold for the dog and can make him sick!

Rinse the dog very thoroughly, leaving soap “scum” in the coat will cause hot spots and dermatitis.

Be careful not to get shampoo in the dog’s eyes, use the eye drops immediately if this occurs and wipe them out with a paper towel. Dry the dog well with the woolly towel and do not leave the dog outside, it will get muddy again!

Curing Dog Constipation with Home Remedies

Article by Cristian Stan

Most people in life will face constipation at one point or another, and the same happens to dogs. Poor diet and not exercising are two of the main causes of constipation in dogs (also common causes for constipation in humans). While many people spend time seeking the various ways to get rid of constipation in their lives, let’s take a moment to cover some dog constipation remedies.

Having a good diet and getting plenty of exercise are every important for dogs, and can help avoid constipation for dogs. Dogs living in the home need to be walked a minimum of two times daily. If you find your dog is constipated try adding a teaspoon of bran to all his meals, which should make his bowel movements occur much more frequently.

Another home remedy for dog constipation is to add psyllium into the dog’s diet. Half of a teaspoon added two times a day works wonders, with the addition of drinking extra water the constipation should be completely gone. Mineral oil is another option is adding psyllium to the diet doesn’t work. Make sure to include meats and vegetables in your dog’s diet, and to make sure you add enough water to your dog’s food.

Many times feces can get tangled up in long dog hair, so it’s best to keep your dog groomed and up-kept. Dogs are known for eating everything they see, it’s your job to make sure they don’t eat and swallow any bones. It’s a known fact that almost all kinds of dogs, all breeds and sizes, are prone to becoming constipated. Do not feed your dog from your dinner table under any circumstances. Even giving him a few pieces of your food contributes and adds your dog’s constipation.

There are certain foods that cause constipation; these foods contain rice, dairy, sugar, and abnormally high levels of protein. Sweets and treats often times cause constipation in dogs. Not having enough fiber also causes dog constipation. Mega colon is a common problem found in dogs which causes constipation. With this disorder the colon is enlarged, making regular bowel movements much harder.

If your dog begins to discharge blood, even in small amounts, you need to take them to the vet. Keeping your dog healthy is extremely important in helping your dog live a long and happy life.

Dog Grooming Table question by boutique: I have some questions for dog groomers?
I am in the process of opening a self dog wash/food and supply. I think I have enough room to add a dog groomer..

1. How much room is needed to groom? Do you need access all around a table or can the grooming table be against a wall?

2. What is the commision for a groomer?

3. Is it ok if people can see you groom or do you like it to be private?

4. What should I look for during the interview?

Thanks!!!

Dog Grooming Table best answer:

Answer by Save the wolves.
1. If the dog is small, it’s not as hard to groom with the table against the wall. You can easily turn the dog around if you need to. Now if you have a larger dog on the table, such as a golden, you need to be able to walk all around the table.

2. 50-60% is pretty common.

3. No problem with people watching…however it can be rather annoying if the owner walks into the salon while you are grooming their dog, and they start calling to the dog, which gets the dog all excited and it wants to dance around the table…NOT a good idea, especially when you need to do scissor work on the dog.

4. Somebody with the right attitude. And watch how they handle the dogs.
