Dog Grooming Table question by Erica B: Help with Dog Grooming and Boarding Shop.?
HI, I need a lot of help with a new shop I am trying to build.
I already have my equipment and a bathing tub, tables, ect. so those are not included.
I am starting an at home grooming and boarding business. It will be small so I’m looking to build/buy a 32 x 16 building.
1st question…..I have a $ 12,000/ $ 15,000 budget on just the building is there a place where I can order a shop kit or would it be cheaper and better just to build it?
2nd question…..where could I find a building floor plan for a grooming shop?

Dog Grooming question by Shasta: how would convert a cargo trailer into a mobile dog grooming business?
In the future i plan to buy a cargo trailer with a side door and convert it to a mobile dog grooming business. How would I go about this. I tried researching, but came open scam site that wants you to pay for info that you can get for free.
I just need instructions, already have a floor plan.
Answer by Harbinger Have you established that it is cheaper to haul a trailer around than to have people with vans or suvs, go to the clients locations and transport the dog to your shop and then return the pet? The time you are driving between locations is costing you money. If you hired people to bring you the pets, you could just keep working.

There are many aspects of Do It Yourself Dog Grooming that are easy to perform, and learning how to fluff dry your dog is one of the easiest ones to do. There will be times when you want your pet to have that “just came from the groomers” look, but you don’t have the time, or the money, to get her to a professional dog groomer. Depending on the size of your dog, and assuming she is on the smaller side, you can “neaten up” your dog in about half an hour.
The only items you will need to fluff dry your dog is a tub, shampoo, a blow dryer, and a dog brush. It is really important to wash him first, unless he was just washed in the last week or so. His coat will respond to the fluff drying process much better if it is relatively clean. If you don’t normally wash your own dog, the most important thing to remember is that you need to rinse him thoroughly. Leftover shampoo isn’t good for his coat, and will also make the fluff drying process much harder, if not impossible, because the areas of leftover shampoo will feel oily to the touch.
Once you have thoroughly rinsed the shampoo off your dog, you can towel her off to remove excess water. It is important here to not dry her too much with the towel, as you want the hair damp once you start the fluff drying process. This is especially true if she has curly hair and you are trying to straighten it out by fluffing.
After you have toweled off the excess water, put his leash on your dog and loop it on a door handle or heavy piece of furniture. The object here is to not allow him an avenue of escape! Most dogs don’t like the blow drying process, although if they are regular visitors to the grooming shop your little household blow dryer will seem tame compared to the dryers we use on them.
The heat and force setting you use on the blow dryer is really dependant on the amount of hair your dog has. The more hair that’s there, the higher the force setting you should use. Watch out for the higher heat setting, as you may dry her coat too quickly, and could actually irritate her skin if she has an extremely thin coat of hair and sensitive skin.
Now all you do is dry the dog with the hairdryer and brush it at the same time against the grain. If you start at his rear end, brush and blow dry toward the head. Basically, you are going to brush up, or towards the top of the dog. Use short, quick strokes, and do this all over his body. In most cases you can do some of the drying without the brushing, as long as you continue to dry against the grain. Once you have finished drying, brush him all over, still against the grain. If you find any areas that look out of place, or funny (too fluffy), just brush it back with the grain.
When you have finished, your dog will have that just been to the groomer look!
Mark has bathed and dried more dogs than he would care to count. If you have ever wondered what part of the grooming process most dogs don’t like the most, it’s the getting wet and the getting dry part!! There are plenty of convenient options when searching for dog grooming courses: Either to become an accredited groomer, or to take care of your dog and your friend’s dogs. You can watch DVD’s about proper technique and practice on your own dog, take a classroom based course under the watchful eyes of an instructor, or take one of the many complete and affordable online courses that will give you the qualifications you need to open up your own grooming center.
What you choose will be a matter of personal preference, intended outcome and budget. Instructional videos are cheap and easy to come by. Classroom courses are time-consuming and generally not always affordable for everyone. Online courses are convenient and cost-effective; yet some of us need a classroom setting, while others thrive working in their own environment.
The format that works best for you, while giving you the end result you need is what you should choose. Most videos can be found on YouTube, while finding the right dog grooming courses for your needs can prove a little more difficult.
First of all make sure if you’re going to invest money in an online or classroom based dog grooming courses that you’re going to end up being a certified groomer capable of opening your own business, or able to work for a grooming shop.
Second make sure that you have the time to complete the course in the allotted time frame. This will obviously be more imperative with classroom courses, but online coursework may give you a time deadline to complete your studies as well.
Third do your research. Ask questions on dog grooming forums, around town, etc. to make sure you’re making the right choice and that the course has a good background of success. You want to read both the good and bad testimonials to form an educated opinion about what school/course is right for you.
Your Shih Tzu Grooming Shop’s name should be carefully planned. The name will become your trademark. Try to think of a name that is short, appealing and describes you as a Shih Tzu Groomer Specialist. Some names could include: Shih Tzu Grooming Palace; Shih Tzu Glamour Manor; Shih Tzu Grooming Boutique; Shih Tzu Beauty Parlor; The Pampered Shih Tzu.
Hair Style Charts
You will want to frame and prominently display photographs of Shih Tzu hair styles and clips in your reception area. A Shih Tzu owner can easily indicate a choice of style, and eliminate confusion as to what is wanted. A beautiful collection of very large Shih Tzu photographs would be quite impressive in your reception area. You can even supplement the display with photographs of your own of Shih Tzu and their owners you have groomed.
Accessories
A Shih Tzu owner will be more motivated to purchase accessories if she or he is satisfied with your services. You might want to carry a specific line of well made brushes, combs, collars, leashes, shampoos, rinses and perfumes, eye and ear preparations. You will probably want to start out with a limited inventory and see how well accessories sell in your shop. Beautiful custom made bows and barrettes for topknots might be a good seller for you. Anything that would be unique to the Shih Tzu would help to set you apart from other general pet groomers.
Bookkeeping
A simple set of books should be set up so you will know what kind of business you are doing from week to week and month to month. A basic accounts receivable and accounts payable is all that is needed. You might want to open a business checking account at your local bank so you will be able to make deposits and withdrawals by check. This will automatically provide you with a record of your income and expenses.
Constantly strive to improve your work with Shih Tzu grooming. Never allow yourself to fall into sloppy work habits. There must be no clipper burns, no nicks, cuts or injuries and no mistakes in grooming the Shih Tzu. Not everyone can be a superb Shih Tzu groomer, but almost anyone with a liking for Shih Tzu can be a good Shih Tzu groomer, and that is sufficient. If your desire is strong and you wish to make a career of Shih Tzu grooming, than it will take extra time, patience and perseverance. Everyone develops and progresses at a different pace. Attend Shih Tzu dog shows and find out who is the best in Shih Tzu grooming. Try to learn from the best of Shih Tzu groomers. Some people are just naturally talented and artistic for one breed or another. For those very fortunate few, everything comes easier. For the average Shih Tzu groomer, however, you should start to become pretty good after about six months. You should reach a peak at about one year. Learn the fundamentals of dog grooming first, then start your specialty with Shih Tzu grooming.
