How to Shave Your Dog Properly

In learning how to shave a dog, choose the right shaver. Although using regular human shavers is okay, they heat up quickly and have the tendency to pull your dog’s hair or fur. Pet shavers are available at different pet shops or even at pet grooming salons.
Place your dog on a table with an overhead. Tie a leash to his collar so that your dog keeps his head up. This can also prevent the dog from jumping off the table. In the absence of an overhead, you can just hold the dog’s collar.
With a #10 blade on the pet shaver, start shaving your dog’s face, being careful not to poke your dog’s eyes. Shave against the body (not doing so might cut your dog’s skin). If your dog starts moving his head, wait until he settles down before continuing on shaving his fur. This is important when learning how to shave a dog.
When done shaving the head, move to shaving his ears. Shaving the outer parts of his ears is as important as shaving the corners of his inner ears. Be careful in shaving this part as your dog might move his head around too much and might cause you to accidentally nick his skin with the shaver.
After shaving the ears, move to his underarms. Lift up his arm and start shaving there. Do the same with the other underarm.

Dog Grooming Table question by TwistedxKiss: Any ideas on how to handle grooming for a grumpy old dog?
I have a 15 year old affenpinscher. His health is not perfect, but well managed between my family and our vet. However, he has developed the habit of biting anyone who touches him when he would rather not be bothered. He was never a biter before, and even in his teething stages NEVER bit my mother. We’ve checked it over with the vet and he is not in pain, the theory is that he’s just old and crabby and being stubborn. Affenpinschers are very stubborn dogs and he is well over his life expectancy, so that seems feasible to me.
The problem is that his groomer told us not to bring him anymore. He has always been a bit bad at the groomer, I expect he probably wasn’t socialized very well. (I am only 5 years older than him, so it wasn’t my responsibility to ensure this. Spare me the lecture, I’ve already given it to my parents. ) Apparently he slipped out of the little leash thing and nearly fell off the table, and when someone grabbed him to catch him he actually tore flesh from their thumb, as well as biting two other people during the appointment. So they told us that he’s just too old and badly behaved for them to handle safely anymore, and to get him groomed at the vet’s instead where he will be safer. But our vet doesn’t groom, and the only one in the area that does, our neighbor’s dog came home from with a broken leg that they neglected to explain. So my dear Max will not be going anywhere near there.
His hair grows way too long and causes him problems, so not grooming him is not an option.
Does anybody have any ideas of how to handle this? I am at a loss. If he’d let me I’d just trim up his face by myself, he’s too old for vanity at this point, but I’m afraid he’d fidget and I’d accidentally cut him or something. He isn’t cut very close to his eyes, it’s mostly hair on top of his head that hangs down, but I don’t want to risk it.
NOTE: The biting is NOT a constant thing. He is only nippy in the late evening when he starts to get sleepy and ought to be left alone anyway, and when he knows his insulin is coming soon (or grooming, apparently.) 95% of the time he is perfectly well behaved, playful, and affectionate. I don’t want anyone to think that he’s completely vicious. While unacceptable either way, the behavior is only during specific isolated circumstances, and he behaves normally otherwise.
The biting isn’t all that offended the groomers. They are concerned that he slipped out of the leash and almost fell off the table. They are afraid he will get hurt as well. So a muzzle and the groomer won’t work, and if AT ALL possible, I’d like to avoid stressing him out that much due to his age.
The reason why his face MUST be maintained is because he was born with some sort of eye condition that causes them to not produce enough moisture, and so his eyes get all goopy and gross. He has medicated drops and drops for moisture, and we clean out his eyes daily, so we do keep on it. But when his hair is long, his eyes could goop up during the night and make the hair crust his eyes shut. When he’s being groomed regularly there is no problem, but now we are having serious troubles.
And he has hair growing out between his pads that is making him slip on the kitchen floor, too.
I am familiar with Acepromazine. The vet says that sedating him at his age is out of the question.
Answer by Luna13 Put a muzzle on him and take him to the groomer. He’ll have to deal with it.

Dog Grooming Table question by Angeln: How to teach a dog to stand while grooming?
I love my dog so much, but well.. he a lazy bum! and really quite dense! lol Hes had some basic obedience training, and knows how to sit and lay down, come, leave it, and how to roll over (well half way over anyway haha ) Anyway.. hes been shedding like crazy, so we got him one of those deshedding combs which we thought was expensive.. but was totally worth the $ 40! But you see he loves the thing! you comb him once and he sits.. so you try to get him to stand up and then you brush him again and sits.. so i make him stand again.. then you comb him and he sits.. repeat.. repeat.. repeat.. then after doing this a million times he flops and rolls over.. like “oh yeah that’s the spot!” lol my lazy mutt! If he would just stand long enough for me to de fuzz his fuzzy bum we would all be happy! So does anyone have any ideas on how to get this through his thick skull? Ive tried the clicker training the way we did it in class to teach him everything else.. and he goes pretty well, but when that comb comes out, He gets a case of the wiggles that can’t be stopped and his eyes just kinda glaze over in pure delight and nothing works! I’m seriously considering building or buying a grooming table or something, if only my fiance would clean out the garage a bit so we had a place to put it. lol.. anyway, im very open to suggestions on how to get him to stand more while being brushed, without making the grooming process any less enjoyable for him.
Answer by Jeannette W Have you taught him a “stand-stay” command? If not, start now. Start with giving him the command when he is already standing. Praise him while he continues to stand. Then release him by giving him another command, and praise that. If he sits or moves without you having released him from the stand-stay, give him the “no reward” marker he already knows from training. Gradually increase the time before you release him. Once he has the duration up, start with distractions – handle his head, back, feet, legs, try to distract him with toys, etc., while he holds the stand-stay, praising him for standing and “no reward”ing him for breaking the stand-stay. Then, once he is solid and has adequate duration, bring out the comb as a distraction. Just touch him with it at first, and slowly work your way up to actually using it on him in the stand-stay.
This way takes a while, but gives you really rock-solid behavior, and should be well worth it in the long run.
