Puppy Grooming Just What Is Required?

Keeping your dog looking nice is an essential part of caring for him. But many dog owners wrongly assume that dog grooming is an option, not a necessity.

It’s more than just dog grooming courses, experts will tell you. While brushing your dog is important, and counts for some grooming, the reality is that your dog needs professional dog grooming.

Why is Dog Grooming Important?

Professional dog groomers bring an expertise to the job that you just can’t replicate. They have access to dog grooming equipment that you might not, and they have experience and perhaps even training that gives them essential skills in keeping your dog’s fur healthy and attractive.

In addition, they often can provide your dog with a true grooming experience that goes beyond what most of us can do in our backyards or bathrooms.

Good dog groomers can ensure that your dog is clean, and that his fur is in good condition. But because a dog groomer will likely spend more time caring for your dog’s fur than you might, he or she might also see skin conditions that need care, or other conditions that need attention.

Beyond that, dog groomers have equipment you don’t have at home, including special dog wash treatments and the know-how to use them. They might also use dog clippers that are of higher quality than those you are able to buy for home use.

How to Find a Dog Grooming Service

Dog groomers can be found in a variety of places. Here are some ideas:

* Ask at the vet’s office for a recommendation; sometimes a good quality dog grooming service is available on site at the vet’s.
* Purchase an ebook, DVD or CD and learn do do at least part of the grooming yourself (will save you some money and helps build your relationship with your dog)
* Head to the local pet store and ask about their offerings; dog groomers can often rent a space at their local pet store and provide grooming while the dog’s owners shop.
* Look for independent dog wash facilities; sometimes these are located in suburban neighborhoods. You might help with the wash, or the dog groomer might do all the work.

You can just drop your dog off at any groomer’s facility, but you might want to ask a few questions of the groomer first. These can include:

* Has the groomer taken any dog grooming courses? This can assure you of a high quality dog wash and grooming session.
* If the dog groomer took dog grooming courses, did they include a discussion of how to look for skin conditions and what to do about them?
* Does the groomer provide puppy grooming? If you have a young dog this can be a relevant question since a puppy’s grooming needs can be different than an adult dog’s.

Grooming Your Dog at Home

If you need to save money or you just don’t want to take your dog to a dog grooming service, you might think that you can replicate a professional dog grooming session at home.

It’s a little hard to do in the beginning, but you can give your dog a good grooming session at home. Here are some ideas:

* Purchase an ebook, DVD or CD and learn do do at least part of the grooming yourself (will save you some money and helps build your relationship with your dog)

* First, make sure you have the proper equipment. This goes beyond a good dog brush, though that is important. Also purchase a high-quality dog shampoo (not human shampoo) and flea dip medication if that’s needed. Also have fresh clean towels and dog clippers.

* Be patient with your dog. Many don’t enjoy baths or being brushed and groomed. One advantage of taking your dog to a dog grooming facility is the dog can be leashed to the table, which makes the job much easier.

* Groom your dog on a regular basis. How often he needs grooming is dictated by his breed, but read up on the breed’s grooming needs and try to keep within that schedule. Otherwise, his fur could get out of hand and you’ll have no choice but to take him to a dog grooming service.

Your dog’s grooming needs generally aren’t excessive unless they are a high-maintenance breed. Be willing to do what’s necessary to keep him groomed, whether that is using a professional dog grooming service, or giving him a groom at home.

Dog Grooming Table question by Chetco: I’m a dog trainer but stumped! Is there a way to keep my dog from wagging tail so hard?
I have bred this lineage for over 20 years, and this is the first time I’ve had this problem. My 75 pound male beats me PAINFULLY with ihis tail! It is just like being beat with a hose. I hate to scold him to make him less happy, but I actually have bruises from being beaten by his ‘love’. When I stoop down I get it across my face, (OUCH!)when I stand up I get it on my butt or leggs. He is 29 inches at the shoulders, so hits me high. He also knocks anything within tail reach off the tables, especially the dining table. Putting him on the grooming table is taking my life in my hands. He is always a big happy clown. Has anynone else solved this problem?
I was thinking that perhaps Great Dane and other giant breeders would have the same problems.
The ‘sit’ option is very good! I am showing this kid, so it isn’t practical to teach him to sit when approached, but if I wasn’t that is an excellent idea! Perhaps after his show career is over.

This deffinatley sounds like a problem for you and only you. When a dog wags its tail it is just like when a human smiles or crys they have no control over this function. It is simply just a reflex of their emotions. When a dog is scared they put their tails between their legs. They cant contoll this because it is not a choice they make. (like chewing things or jumping on you) If you punnish him for wagging his tail he wont understand what he is being punished for and overall you might get a very depressed dog. so the best thing to do is try to avoid the tail when he is happy or excited or just block it with your hand.

there is even the possibility to take a certification online, through long distance

courses.

In case this alternative works for you, then, the trainer you pay for the classes should be

accredited.

Once the all breed dog grooming training is complete you can move on to the next level: starting

your own business.

Vet centers, rescue

centers, kennels and local groomers service local neighborhoods. In

case you are trying to launch your business, you should first invest in grooming equipment such as

table and brushes.

The rest of the equipment items are equally important. All breed dog grooming requires a

comprehensive set of hair brushes, combs,

grinders, clippers and the rest, so that all the challenges

of the grooming can be faced successfully. Experience and skill are the advantages that win customers’ trust and loyalty. All breed dog grooming means working on all sorts of dogs, some hairier than

the rest. There is a simple explanation for this: a

pet owner cannot groom a thick-haired dog at home because of the very the nature of the dog’s coat.

You’ll have to do the job and for good money too! Be

reasonable in your pricing policy, because, this too attracts customers.

All breed dog grooming is also tackled with in lots of books written by expert

groomers. Even so, keep in mind that an All-Breed-Dog-Grooming book will not qualify you for

doing the job and opening a business. You still have to go through the training steps necessary for

authorization. Any business requires certification and authorization, and those are the first

things you should be concerned about!

Dog Grooming Supplies question by : Can you answer these dog grooming questions?
I want a German Shepherd Dog. I know they shed a lot and require a good brushing, but I have some questions.

1. How often do they need to be bathed? I already no it shouldn’t be more than once a month, unless they really need it.

2. What shampoo do I use? I know it should be oatmeal based, but are there any good brands to look for?

3. What supplies will I need? How can I learn how to use them?
On the first question, I meant to say “know”, not “no”.
Thank you so much, everyone! I appreciate all the great answers.
