If you buy small dog crates for larger dogs then your dog might feel uncomfortable and even suffocated and this will not only affect his temperament but also make him grumpy. Most of the transport dog crates have been created keeping in mind the requirement of dogs of different sizes.

While picking up dog crates, you need to take into consideration the height as well as the length of your dog. You should keep in mind that the transport dog crates should be big enough for your dog to lie down and even stand up without having to duck his head. A thunderstorm rolls in and you’re out of the house for the afternoon. The thunder roars and the lighting cracks around the sky, and your dog is frightened half to death. With no one around to comfort him, where can he go to feel safe and protected? It may be time to consider giving your dog his own special place.

Enter the dog crate. This can be a regular dog kennel, a small wire fence, or even just a special area that your dog can call its own. In any case, it should be able to be closed off. You will be creating a space that your dog can call its own, a special space that your dog can go when he needs to be away from everyone, or a space that he can feel safe if, say he is escaping the vacuum cleaner or another frightening household noise.

The thinking behind the crate is that it suits your dog’s instinct of den building. The ancestors of the dog are all den diggers and use the space as a safe zone where they can hide from danger or protect their pups. A dog, while not having as many threats or dangers in its life, still values that safe place.

The benefits of having a crate for your dog are many and varied. From your dog’s perspective, he will have a safe place to avoid the stress of other areas of the house. From your perspective, you will have a place to put your pet if guests are coming who may not appreciate your dog, your dog will become house trained more quickly as he will not want to soil his crate or den, and you will have a convenient way to transport your dog. If you need to fly and your dog has never spent time in a kennel before, the flight will be terribly stressful. If your dog understands his crate to be his special place, he will be more (though not entirely) comfortable while in the air.

You will have several options when selecting a crate for your dog. There are many material to choose from, including plastic, collapsible fabric and metal. Most important is that the crate should be the right size for your dog. Fido should be able to stand up and turn completely around easily when the crate is closed.

Next, consider what the crate will be used for. Will you consider to bring your pet on flying trips? Will he be riding in the car? Your pet store associate will be able to help you choose the right crate.

Just before we dive into the training methods, here are some words of advise. Your dog’s crate is your dog’s own special place in the house. It should always be a good place to be and should never be used for punishment. You must also remember that dogs of different ages will be able to stand different amounts of time in the crate. Puppies and very old dogs may not be able to hold their bladders for very long.

How to Crate Train Your Dog

Begin by leaving the crate out in a place your dog can’t miss. Allow him to explore it at his leisure. You can also place a mat or cushion on the bottom. Soon after, start to place your dog food nearer to the crate and eventually to just inside the door. The goal is that your dog will eventually take his meals in the kennel without fear.

While your dog is in the crate, close the door briefly before opening it again, gradually prolonging the amount of time your dog spends with the door closed. In the beginning, stay close to the kennel so your dog can see you, but as time goes on, move out of view and earshot.

Between mealtimes, try to get your dog to go into the crate willingly. Make it a point to praise your dog and follow up with a treat every time he enters the crate voluntarily.

Eventually your dog should become comfortable staying in the crate for at least half an hour. At this point you might try keeping him in the crate over night or while you leave the house briefly.

Some dogs will whine while in their crates. Try to figure out if your dog needs to be let out to relieve himself or if he is simply whining to be let out. If it’s the former, let him out and put him back in once he’s finished. If not, choosing to ignore the whining is the best solution. Be sure you don’t reward your dog for whining.

I have been a dog groomer for 11 years and my parents have owned a dog kennel for 16 besides that I was raised with dogs all my life. In all my experiences with dogs of all sizes and having groomed well over 20,000 dogs I have to completely disagree that smaller dogs are safer than larger ones. I have been bitten hundreds of times throughout the years and 90% of the time it has been by a smaller dog. The damage they have done has by far been worse than a larger dog as well. I am a professional and have an advantage of reading a dog but the everyday person is not as lucky. I have 2 children who have been raised around dogs as well and of course they want a little dog they can carry around but they also have been bitten by smaller dogs and never larger ones.

Coming from a family that has made dog care a profession we often have the many children in our family around strange dogs as well as family pets. My mother has 2 larger dogs, a pit bull and a husky, both very friendly dogs. The children like to think of them as horses at times and pull on their ears as well but neither dog lets it bother them. In addition to the 2 larger dogs she has 3 smaller dogs as well one who has bit pretty much every child in our family. Nothing too severe but a bit none the less. We have definitely went out of our way to teach them all the correct handling of strange dogs of all sizes but kids will be kids and they do not always listen. Smaller dogs are less tolerant of child play and not quite as sturdy as a larger dog so children need to be more gentle, which is a lot to ask of a child at times.

I will agree that a larger dog has the potential to do more damage based on the size of the teeth and the strength of their jaw but the assortment of larger breeds that are dosal and well known as family dogs far outweighs that of smaller breeds. I would never allow a shih tzu, cocker spaniel, or a chihauha around my children as they are 3 examples of the worst I have seen of all dogs. On the larger breed side you have wonderful commonly owned golden retrievers, labrador retrievers, newfoundlands, collies and so many more that I could list that I have never seen aggression from. It is hard for me to say that when it comes to any smaller dogs. It is not because I am grooming them because I am one of the most patient groomers and well known for doing the most difficult of dogs. I am not afraid of being bit because I can read a dog. Not everyone is able to do so. I also have the luxury of using a muzzle if needed which I do not like to do but when I have to it is usually on a smaller dog.

I would never say to run out and get a chow or a doberman for your child as there will always be certain breeds not well suited for children but larger dogs are just more sturdy and able to be tolerant of childs play. I can name far more larger breeds great for children than smaller breeds but no matter what it will always come down to training the dog while it is young. All breeds are known for a certain temperament so you must consider that when choosing a dog for a child’s pet. I also have many scars from smaller breeds and only 2 from larger ones. The choice in larger dogs being pets as opposed to smaller dogs can be seen as well throughout the dogs we board in our kennel. It is Thanksgiving weekend and we have approximately 150 dogs of which less than 20 are smaller breeds. It has become the family choice to have a larger more dosal breed than a smaller wirey one. Either way always choose wisely, have your children meet and play with any dog before you make the decision on whether to make a permanent choice.

Dogs are not only part of your family but the most loyal and loving companions that you will ever have. They stay by your side when you are happy or sad and love you unconditionally. If you go out for as little as ten minutes, they let you know how much they missed you when you come back. Our responsibility, as a dog owner, is to provide our dog with everything it requires, to live a healthy, happy life.

Always feed your dog a healthy diet, as you do not want them to become overweight or underweight. Dog treats are great but stay away from ones that contain a large amount of sugar or salt. Be aware that there are people foods potentially fatal to your dog. Some of these are chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, coffee and certain mushrooms. Give your dog only food and treats that they make specifically for dogs. Never give your dog chicken bones, fish bones or pork chop bones. There is a possibility of the bones splintering into very sharp pieces and lodging in your pets throat. Have fresh, cool water available at all times.

Dogs need daily walks, exercise and play time, so be prepared to spend time doing this. A fenced yard is great but some dogs are fantastic escape artists, so make sure your property is secure. A dog kennel that is large enough for your pet to get fresh air, look around with enough room for some exercise, is a great option for people with unfenced yards.

Dogs require grooming but how much will depend on the breed of dog or coat type. Some dogs with long hair require an hour or more of grooming daily while grooming once every few weeks is fine for others. There are dogs that require haircuts, as their coats grow continuously, such as poodles and miniature schnauzers. You should consider this when selecting a dog because, unless you cut your dogs hair yourself, it can become a little costly.

Depending on the breed, bath your dog when necessary or a few times a year. Dogs coats contain oils that protect and keep their coats clean. If you bath them too often, this can remove these oils causing the dog to have more of an odor. Bath dogs, which require haircuts, every six or eight weeks before grooming them. If you are bathing your own dog, brush or comb a longhaired dog first, as it is very difficult to untangle damp or wet hair. Start at your pets head and work your way back. A little apple cider vinegar on cotton balls works great at keeping water out of your pets ears. When there is no time to bath a smelly dog, try rubbing a little baking soda into their fur and then brushing it off.

Dogs nails need trimming occasionally. If you want to do this yourself, have the vet or a professional dog-grooming person show you the proper way. Brush your dogs teeth daily using toothpaste made specifically for dogs. This helps prevent dental problems as your pet ages.
