Dog Grooming Clippers question by Good Knowledge: My dog got cut with grooming clippers and it acting really mellow.?
I have a Schnauzer/ Yorkie mix dog that I was grooming and with a flinch I clipped the webbing between his hind leg and stomach. He is normally a very hyper and active dog that is always jumping from me to my fiancee looking for who is going to give him more attention, but after the cut he is really mellow. I gave him a Greenie, his favorite treat, and he doesn’t even act like he wants it and is just laying in my lap calmly, something he has never done in the year that I’ve had him. I contacted the vet and sent him a bunch of pictures and I need to take him in for a checkup tomorrow, but the vet wasn’t too worried about him tonight. I have a sock wrapped around him right now to stop the bleeding, at the vet’s request.
Anyways, is it the pain, discomfort or a loss of blood or a combination of anything that could be causing all this mellowness. I feel really bad and have been in tears for almost 2 hours to see my pup go through this. And I just don’t know what to do until his appt tomorrow. Any suggestions.

But to answer your question, it could be the dog thinks you are mad at him for something he can’t remember so it is sad because he can’t figure it out. Just give him love and keep him close. He doesn’t need treats, just love at this point.

I am a dog and cat groomer. I have tried various clippers such as Andis or Oster clipper. I would like to hear some opinions of others as to which clippers they use and why.

I like the andis ultra edge clippers. I don’t really like oster clippers because they’re a little heavier and the clipper itself feels bulky in my hand. Plus osters are extremely loud (to me anyways) and sometimes scare the pet. The ultra edges are quiet, light weight and easy to maneuver. But as far as them getting hot, they’re all gonna get hot fairly quickly depending on the haircut and such. But what I’ve learned is to have multiple blades of the same length so that way you can just switch them out instead of applying coolant every 5 min. I have several #40′s, #10′s and #7′s since these are the ones I use most but I have at least 2 of all the others. But if you must use coolant, I recommend the oster kool lube, it smells good and helps your blades not to rust so fast. Hope this helps!

My dog is a Rhodesian ridgeback and is a solid 160 pounds. His nails have gotten so large that I can’t find any nail clippers that will fit his nails. I’m not sure if the grinders will work. Are there any extra large nail clippers out there?

You will probably need to use the grinder attachment for a Dremel tool, but be very careful. That’s a big dog, and if he isn’t used to having his nails ground, I wouldn’t just try doing it…it would be dangerous both for you as well the dog.

Your best bet is probably to ask a groomer, and if necessary, go to the hardware store and buy the grinder head and take it with you – they should have a grinder there, but the sandpaper drum they normally use won’t be hard enough.
