dog grooming question by okiegirl: DIY dog grooming. My dog is kinda mean, so I am being forced to do it myself?
I have a 6 year old male Shih Tzu. Everytime he goes to the groomer he gets scared and he growls and snaps. I had a groomer before that could deal with him, but I have since moved out of state. I have tried every groomer in the area where I live now, they either wont groom him at all or they call me in mid groom and say “Come get him, I cant work with this dog.” Or they charge me about 100$ over the normal price because they said he acted bad and took up to much of their time. So I have been forced to face the fact I am going to have to do this myself. I bought a dog grooming kit with shears, brushes and clippers. But I am confused about something, do I shave the dog before the bath? Or do I give him a bath, dry him then shave him? Or should I bathe him then shave while his hair is still wet? And please dont tell me this breed does not need to be shaved, I know that, but he just isnt happy when his hair is long. Any info and tips will help alot, thanks!

Answer by Dalai I’m a groomer of 10 years. Take him to a Vet that offers grooming. Have him stripped down nose to tail every 3 months and let them tranquilize him at first.It will either get better (where the dog is again OK with being handled by a groomer) or worse ( they will need to completely Anastasie the dog)I assume that either you didn’t take him for regular grooming from puppy hood (every 4 to 8 weeks) or he had a bad experience at the groomer.

Although the grooming tools that you use will be reflective of the dog breed that you have, I have found that there are a number of grooming tools that every dog owner should have, which will make grooming your dog much easier.
Number 5: A Dremel Tool
When I first found out that you could use a dremel with a sanding attachment to trim a dog’s nails, I was a bit sceptical. One, I thought it would be a bit of a nuisance to constantly pull out the dremel tool for this job. Two, I thought it would be much more expensive to constantly replace the disks and three, I thought there was no way my dog would allow it.Even still, I tried the dremel tool on my dog and while he didn’t enjoy it at first, he quickly grew to accept it. Personally, I found the dremel tool to be a dream and it made nail trimming go much faster and smoother. In addition, I never had to worry about cutting the quick and making the nail bleed since it would cauterize the quick immediately.So, for ease of use and the ability to create a nice finish on your dog’s nail, the dremel tool is definitely a must have tool that any pet groomer can’t live without.
Number 4: Furminator
This is a tool that you can live without if you have a dog without an undercoat, however, if you don’t, then this is really a tool that you should have. The furminator is a tool that looks very similar to an undercoat rake and its complete function is simply to strip away the dead hair that is found in the undercoat.While there have been a number of sceptics concerning the Furminator, the tool really does cut down on the amount of shed hair in your home if you use it properly and often. My only word of advice with this tool is to use it outside or in a room where the hair can be swept up easily because it does remove a lot of hair.
Number 3: Straight Shears
If you have a dog with a shorter coat, you probably won’t need straight shears at all, however, if your dog has any type of length to his or her coat, then these can be a lifesaver from time to time. I always recommend having a pair in the house to tackle anything that gets in to the coat and mats it to the point that it cannot be worked out with a comb. This will help prevent your dog from feeling pain and you can easily snip out the hair. In addition, it is perfect for tidying up the look of your dog around his head and trimming hair between his paw pads to prevent him from being uncomfortable.With straight shears, make sure that you always choose a pair that is designed for hair and make sure that you don’t use them for anything else. Also, for safety, try to purchase a pair that has a blunted end or a rounded end to prevent poking your dog.
Number 2: Ear Cleansers
While it isn’t exactly a tool, it is something that you should have in your dog grooming kit for a number of reasons. One, ear cleansers will help with cleaning on a regular basis. They are designed to help break down the dirt and they allow the debris to be soaked up much easier. Two, ear cleaners often have a drying agent in it. This will keep your dog’s ears from getting infections and will cut down on the amount of moisture in them. Lastly, ear cleansers often contain a small amount of medication, which is also beneficial to staving off ear infections.When it comes to grooming tools I can’t live without, this is definitely in the top 5, especially when I am grooming dogs with long, hanging ears.

It may have been obvious, but a good quality dog brush is something that everyone should have in their grooming supplies and I even recommend that you have two or three of them. The reason for this is to meet all of the grooming needs of your coat type. The more brushes, the better the finish and the more likely your dog’s coat will be cared for. The better your dog’s coat is cared for, the healthier it will be and will look.

If you are anything like me, you love your dogs and want to keep them groomed as best as possible. Unfortunately, crating, packing up the car and then traveling to the nearest groomer can be stressful to both yourself and your dog, not to mention costly. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to provide your dog a top quality grooming experience in the comfort of your own home? I am going to share with you 3 easy steps that will allow you to begin dog grooming on your own.
Step 1: Learn to Brush. Brushing is the foundation of proper pet grooming, not only does brushing help your dog’s skin and coat health, it will also create a strong bond between you and your dog. Breed standards and coat will determine how often you should be brushing but a basic guideline is to brush daily for silky or long coated dogs and to brush one to two times a week for a short or curly coated dog.
Step 2: Give your dog a bath. Luckily for us, dogs in general tend to be happy to get into water and this makes bathing a snap compared to other home pets. The rule of thumb is that a dog should be bathed every 2 months or so and definitely no more than once per month. The reason for such long periods between bathing is to protect your dog’s natural oils. These oils are what allow dogs to be such great swimmers and also what allows their fur to keep them warm. In the warmest months of the summer, longer haired dogs may require washing as often as every two weeks but if so, it is important to use high quality pet shampoo’s to protect their natural oils and keep their skin from becoming irritated.
Step 3: Dry out your dog’s coat. When drying a dog most people choose to use a towel however it is perfectly fine to use a blow dryer or even a combination of the two. While keeping a calm tone, remove excess water by commanding the dog to shake or by simply petting the dog in long strokes that push out the excess water from the coat. Once excess water is removed, use towels to hand dry the dog from the head to the back and then from the sides to the underside, chest, legs and tail.
In this article I have shared the three basic steps of successful dog grooming: brushing, washing and drying.
