Dog Grooming Supplies question by Fur and Fiction: Dog grooming school or grooming training via Petco?
I am a grooming assistant at Petco, a corporation that I am not particularly fond of. I do, however, love my job.

I have been offered training to become a groomer through Petco’s mentor program. There is no cost to me, other than the cost of supplies. There is, however, a contract stating I need to work at Petco for a year following my training. I have never stayed at a job this long, so this intimidates me a bit, but I could see myself working there without any problem.

My issue is the type of experience I will be getting. I am not sure how well a Petco training program could possibly prepare me for the real world of grooming. The focus would be on common breeds, such as Shih Tzu’s and Yorkshire Terriers. Rarer breeds like Bedlington Terriers and Bearded Collie’s, will probably not be covered.

I also have the option of going to a grooming school. I am very privileged in that my parents are willing to pay for the grooming school. This would, however, be taking money out of my college fund, since I have opted to become a groomer before completing college.

I am not sure which here would be the better option for me. Has anyone been to grooming school or trained to groom at a Petco? I know technique will come in time- I just want good advice the first time around, rather than having to start over from scratch when I realize I have learned bad Petco habits. Face it: Petco groomers are not world class.

I think you answered your own question. The fact of the 1 year contract or non-compete clause may tie you down to a situation that you may find you don’t enjoy, then you’re stuck. I don’t have my dog groomed, but I have relatives who used Petco/Petsmart groomers once & will never go back. Talk to independent groomers with their own shops for some more insight from the other perspective. Good luck!

(add: not to “knock” good groomers–I’m sure there are some Petco stores with good ones. But I think a really good independent groomer with a loyal following, probably hasn’t gone to Petco groomer training.)

Dog crates: A Dog’s Crate Is His Castle
Dog Crate

If you don’t already own a dog crate for your pet, you might be thinking what the point is in getting one. After all, you bought a dog to become a cherished member of the family, not to lock it away in a little box?

Well, aside from the practical advantages I’m about to go in to, there is one big reason to celebrate the crate dogs dig dog crates! Dogs love to have a place of their own in which they can snuggle down and feel secure and if they were in the wild, they would probably be on the lookout for a handy den. A well-sized, comfortable dog crate will soon become your dog’s favourite hideaway. By the way, well-sized means not too big. An oversized crate will have your dog assuming it has en suite facilities!

Now for some practical benefits of dog crating. It can help with house training, when travelling and on any occasion when you want to control your dog’s movements, for example when expecting a visit from people who don’t own a dog and are wary of them.

]]>

But what kind of crate does your dog need? A soft dog crate or a wire one? Are wooden dog crates best for your pet? What type do you need for your overseas vacation?

If your pooch is a newly-trained pup that hasn’t quite got out of the chewing habit, you might want to opt for a wire crate. Don’t skip on quality, though. A good wire dog crate will resist chewing while a shoddy one will look a mess in a short space of time.

If your dog is a bit older, wooden dog crates are best in terms of aesthetics and can make attractive features in themselves. Wooden dog crates are also better for the environment than plastic ones.

If you need a crate that is lightweight, portable and easy to assemble, you might want to consider a soft dog crate. Soft dog crates are ideal if you do a lot of travelling.

And while on the subject of travelling, if you need to fly do you want your loyal friend to travel beside you as a fellow passenger or to be thrown into the cargo hold as a piece of luggage? Then you will need to invest in one of the many airline approved dog carriers. Airline officials follow strict guidelines on allowing dog carriers on a plane, and if yours is as little as an inch above regulation height you may be separated. Some breeds, especially larger ones, will have to travel in the hold anyway, in which case airline approved dog carriers are important to maximise comfort and reduce stress.

Dog Crate question by Misty_00: I’m looking for a dog crate for my Doberman puppy. How big does it need to be?
I’ve been reading that crating would be a good place to keep my pup while I’m at work. I’m not really sure how big it needs to be, though. He’s just a pup now (only 2 months old) but will grow up to be an average sized Doberman (the breed itself is pretty big, though). I’m looking for a crate to keep him in during the day while I work. I heard that dogs use the Crate as their den (Apparently, they are animals who are looking for “dens” to inhabit). Since this crate sounds like it will be the dog’s “clubhouse” and I will have blankets and toys in there for him, should he have room for him to run around as a puppy and just enough room to sleep as an adult dog? How big would that need to be?

Dog Crate best answer:

Answer by Lyn S
It needs to be big enough for him to turn around in and be able to stand up. Don’t buy a huge one for a full grown dog or the puppy would not feel comfortable in it. Also place an old towel in the bottom of the crate to give in some padding.

Tips on border collie grooming

4985754311 edb153d9f3 m Tips on border collie grooming

As an owner of border collies for over 30 years one of the best characteristics is their ease of care. Unlike a poodle or afghan hound or bichon – all beautiful dogs – the border collie’s grooming needs are minimal. Minimal does not mean non-existant however.

Basic grooming of any dog is needed and the border collie is no different. Learn to keep toenails in proper condition, flea and tick control and an occasional hard “recreational bone” to keep teeth in good condition.

The border collie, due to a working heritage, has several coats available within the breed. A smooth coat is “wash and wear” – sometimes an undercoat will need extra care to pull out when shedding but most of the time this is the easiest of coats to care for. There’s the medium coat or rough coat and beyond that a long coat, with most of these show dogs that sometimes are almost a sheltie coat. These do take extra grooming but most people are not maintaining show dogs.

Regular brushing to keep the coat in condition is all most border collies need. Whether this is weekly, a couple times per month or more often depends on the dog and activity. Many take a dip in a pool or lake and refresh themselves naturally. Regular brushing keeps the coat clear but get your hands on your dog every day. Regularly check his teeth and ears and keep them clean.

This lets you feel and catch problems before they become major issues. This was illustrated last spring when a smooth 3/4 border collie “felt” strange. She acted normal but when petting her it felt like there was “bubble wrap” under her skin, and as a few hours passed she “crinkled” when petted. A trip to the vet first thing in the morning revealed no cuts as ‘normally’ present according to the vet, but what it was diagnosed as was a bacterial infection that could have been life threatening if unchecked. As it was, she was on antibiotics for 10 days tucked in bites of hot dogs and as far as she knew she was just getting extra treats! Hands on is important and this is just one example of it saving in the long run.

This also lets you notice fleas, skin issues and other problems while they are new and easily treated. Because of the ease of care of these dogs regular brushing and trimming nails are the biggest grooming you will have. Do keep a parasite program in place, natural or otherwise and remember border collies can be sensitive to Ivomectin products. If you’ve ever seen a healthy dog drop and go into a seizure you won’t forget it…watch what you treat your border collie with.

The border collie grooming schedule is best done quickly and frequently and doesn’t take a great deal of time but does need done!

Shetland sheepdog grooming

4599592691 bec9f2300c m Shetland sheepdog grooming

The Shetland Sheepdog is commonly known as the “Sheltie” and closely resembles the Collie. Originating from the Shetland Islands, the Sheltie is highly intelligent with a gentle nature. Their coat is long and flowing which protects them from the elements. The coat will repel rain, block the dog from the wind and insulate their body from cold weather. In order to keep this luxurious coat in beautiful condition, regular grooming will be required.

Because the Sheltie enjoys the great outdoors, their long coat tends to pick up matter that can become tangled in the fur. Daily brushings are usually needed for this breed. Tools that will be needed for a regular grooming session should be gathered before the grooming process which includes:

-Brush and/or Combs

-Shampoo

-Sponge

-Heavy Towel

-Dryer

-Scissors (only needed if trimming excess hair from the face, hocks or the bottom of the paws)

-Nail Trimmers

-Cotton Balls

A universal brush is normally the only brush a groomer will need but for the Sheltie, a slicker and pin brush and wide metal combs will be needed. These grooming tools can be used on tangled or matted coats. A mat comb can be utilized if the coat is badly matted. A spray-on conditioner can be used to help detangle any mats.

For extreme matting, the coat may need to be fully shaven before bathing. If grooming a Sheltie that has a neglected coat, a groomer will need clippers with several sized blades. A number 7F blade will work for the overall coat, a number 15 can be used for the pads and a number 10 works well on the stomach area. If you are having to fully shave the Sheltie due to neglect, be very cautious for other signs of neglect during clipping such as sores and wounds. After the coat is thoroughly tamed, the Sheltie is ready for a professional bath.

The ideal water temperature for bathing a dog is approximately 110 degrees Fahrenheit. A spray hose connected to a faucet will make the bathing process much simpler. Start with the hindquarters and completely wet the Sheltie. The excess water should not be left in the tub and should flow down the drain. The Sheltie is actually getting a “shower” rather than a bath. In case the dog decides to do the “shake”, wearing a plastic apron will be very handy in keeping the groomer from being soaked during bathing.

After the Sheltie is soaked, place shampoo on the sponge and on the dog, from rear to front. Keep shampoo clear of the eyes even if the shampoo claims

Pet Grooming is Important

4599650751 998e108742 m Pet Grooming is Important

My dog Tyke is a Border Collie. Border Collies have a “double coat” consisting of an outer or “guard” coat and an undercoat. Although they should only be given a bath when needed, it’s necessary to have them groomed regularly to keep their coat shiny, smooth and healthy, especially during their winter and summer shedding periods. And yes, as Tyke has two coats, I need two different rakes to groom him!

I like grooming Tyke, not only because spending that extra quality time together strengthens my bond with him, but also because I may discover developing health problems like a tumor sooner rather than later.

Regular grooming is alas often overlooked as an important and necessary aspect of pet ownership that should not be ignored.

You may decide that it’s better to take your pet to a professional who is sure to do it right. A professional groomer will be sensitive to you and your pet’s needs; they are interested in gaining you and your pet’s trust. But because pet grooming is so important, it’s vital that you teach your dog to tolerate it as soon as you take her home so the experience can remain safe and stress free for her.

On the other hand, you may want to start a grooming business yourself. Pet grooming is an alternative pet business opportunity that is widely popular today, as more and more pet owners spend a lot of money to pamper their pets. Dog grooming experience can be gained through apprenticeship, therefore it is wise to spend at least one year gaining experience from a well respected groomer. Anyone interested in becoming a pet groomer should do online research to find out the right steps to take.

Apparently, a new trend that is highly likely to make you successful is opting for door-to-door, mobile pet grooming. Mobile grooming will succeed anywhere pet grooming is needed: you can install all the equipment that you need inside a van, and you simply drive to people’s homes. They don’t need to spend the time or do the effort to drive back and forth, and you don’t need to pay the rent for an office. A perfect win-win situation.

Rewarding though it is, catering to personable, caring people who desire this service, keep in mind that pet grooming is very physical work and requires patience and a strong desire to learn.

Always remember though, running a pet grooming business successfully is about building trust between you and the pet as well as its owner: that can only happen if you care about pets as much as you care about people.
