Jeanne's Dog Grooming

Dog grooming was all the rave during the 19th Century and the Poodle was the most popular breed of dog pampered and groomed. The first recorded grooming parlors were founded in France and the Poodle became the national dog of France under the First Republic. Due to its popularity, the breed soon became known as the French Poodle and not very long after, became the most popular breed in North America.

Pet grooming has faced many changes throughout the years as many more individuals “humanize” their four-legged companions. There are five fundamentals of dog grooming for any breed that make up the basic procedure. These are only the basics of grooming.

-Brushing/Combing

-Bathing

-Blow Drying

-Ear Cleaning

-Nail Trimming

To groom the Poodle, the groomer will need some basic tools before starting. A groomer should have all tools available before starting the grooming process.

-Brush

-Dog shampoo

-Sponge

-Heavy Towel

-Pet Dryer

-Cotton Balls

-Nail Trimmers

-Clippers (only needed if clipping of the hair will be done)

-Scissors

A universal brush is normally the only brush a groomer will need. This brush can be used on tangled or matted coats or a slicker brush can be used for delicate coats. A mat comb can be utilized if the coat is badly matted. For extreme matting, the coat may need to be fully shaven before bathing. After the coat is thoroughly tamed, the poodle is ready for a professional bath.

The ideal water temperature is approximately 110 degrees Fahrenheit. A spray hose connected to a faucet will make this task much simpler. Start with the hindquarters and completely wet the Poodle. The excess water should not be left in the tub and should flow down the drain. The Poodle is actually getting a “shower” rather than a bath. In case the dog decides to do the “shake”, a plastic apron will be very handy in keeping the groomer from being soaked during this process.

After the Poodle is soaked, place shampoo on the sponge and on the Poodle, from rear to front. Keep shampoo clear of the eyes even if the shampoo claims to be tearless. Work the shampoo into the coat not forgetting any areas including the bottoms of the feet. Rinse the shampoo thoroughly, letting the water rinse until it runs clear from the coat. If the Poodle was heavily soiled, the dog may need two washings. The coat of the Poodle has a naturally harsh, dense texture. A cream rinse is not recommended for this type of coat.

The American Pit Bull Terrier

The Pit Bull’s appearance screams power, passion, and undying willingness. The Pit Bull’s brick-like head, which is very broad to house the powerful jaws, is carried on a heavily muscled neck. The neck runs into a deep, thick, well-sprung chest. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a very muscular, stocky, yet agile dog and is undeniably strong for his size. The ears can be cropped, though this is optional. Docked tails are not accepted by the UKC or the ADBA. Their eyes are rounded and soulful. Its coat is thick, short, and very shiny. The tail tapers to a point.

Ranging in height from 18-22 inches (46-56 cm) at the withers, and with an average weight of 22 – 75 pounds (10-30 kg), the Pit Bull is not a large dog. The original APBT’s were between 20 – 40 pounds (9-18 kg.) and were bred small for their main purpose, fighting. One of the many misconceptions about APBT’s is that they are muscle bound, viscous hulks that weigh in around 85 pounds (39 kg.) but the fact is APBT’s that are that large have been crossed with other breeds.

The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Brush regularly with a rubber bristle brush, and bathe about once a month. This breed is an average shedder. Bathing too frequently can strip the coat of essential oils, leaving the coat dull. Between shampoos you can mix one part vinegar to one part water and sponge over the dog to remove unpleasant dog odors, leaving a beautiful shine. The vinegar smell will disappear quickly. Dampen a cotton ball with peroxide to clean inside the ears. There should be no clipping required on the very short coat. Clip the tips of the nails off at least every two weeks to keep them properly trimmed. Be sure not to clip the quick’ of the nail, which is the vein that runs through the center of each nail. Always have Quick Stop (available in all pet stores) nearby when clipping nails, just in case you cut the quick. The dog will yelp and it will bleed.

Generally a very healthy breed, although some do develop hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, allergies to grass and congenital heart disease. The life expectancy of the Pit Bull averages about 12 years. Grouped with the Mastiff, the American Pit Bull Terrier is recognized by the NAPDR, UKC, NKC, ADBA, CKC, APBR, APRI, ACR.

The American Pit Bull Terrier has a strong desire to please. The Pit Bull has evoked more human emotional, rational, and irrational response than any other breed that exists today.

Poodle grooming can be a daunting task, but a necessary part of owning this particular breed. Well-groomed poodles have healthier skin and coats and grooming also helps prevent health problems.

A poodle’s hair never stops growing, so a full clipping is necessary every six to eight weeks. If you can afford it, it may be best to pay someone else to groom your poodle. The steps involved can be labor intensive and it is sometimes best left to a professional.

Choose your groomer carefully and take advice from other poodle owners in your area. You might want to consider scooping out different breeders in the area. Visit their shops without your dog and pay attention to how the facility is managed. Look for a clean shop and a groomer with a gentle hand and manner.

If money is an issue, you can use a professional groomer every second time. You can maintain your poodles grooming yourself in between visits and save money.

To maintain your poodle’s cut between visits, you will need some quality dog grooming tools. Your groomer can often purchase professional tools for you at a discount, or you can find quality tools at a good pet store or at a dog show.

You will need a high quality pair of clippers and scissors. Keep your clippers in top working condition by cleaning the blades and oiling them regularly. Dull blades can scrape the skin of your poodle and cause clipper burn. Look for a pair of clippers that have a many blades, this way you can rotate the blades during the grooming session if need be.

You will also need quality brushes and combs to maintain your poodle’s cut between grooming sessions. Your dog should be well brushed at least twice a week, if not daily.

Even though poodles don’t shed as much as other dogs, they do lose hair. That hair remains in the dog’s coat until you brush it out. Brushing will also keep your poodle’s coat shiny by distributing the skin’s natural oils.

Ask your groomer for brush recommendations, as the right brush will depend on what type of cut your poodle has. Bi-weekly brushing sessions can be a great way to bond with your dog. Gentle but vigorous brushing will make your dog feel good and increase circulation in the skin.

You can bathe your poodle as often as once a week. Using a raised tub with a non-slip mat will make the experience more pleasurable for you both. To start, use warm water to soak your dog’s coat to the skin.

Since poodles are water dogs they naturally shed water so it might take some effort to get the coat completely wet. You can use a mild dog shampoo to bathe your poodle.

Make sure to rinse the shampoo out of the dog’s coat thoroughly. Any leftover residue can be irritating to the dog’s skin. After your poodle’s bath you can let the dog air dry for a curly look, or brush out the hair while blow-drying to give the coat a smooth and fluffy look.
