Grooming Needs of Miniature Schnauzers

Article by Lea Mullins

Miniature Schnauzers have a striking and unique appearance. Their look, and overall health, is dependant on good dog grooming practices.

Miniature schnauzers have a double coat. This means that they have a soft, short haired coat under a long haired coat. Occasional “haircuts” are required to help keep the coat from matting. What other upkeep is required?

Besides the coat trimming, the dog needs regular baths, nail trimming, tooth brushing and having the anal glands expressed. Some owners enjoy doing the grooming themselves, while others prefer hiring a groomer to do it.

If you decide to use a groomer, visit the groomer before taking the dog. Check for cleanliness and if the groomers are adequately trained. Another consideration is what chemicals or soaps will be used on the dog. Also check the area where your Miniature Schnauzer will be kept before and after grooming.

Like any other business, get referrals and call them. You can also contact the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints.

There are several grooming aids that you’ll need if doing the grooming yourself. These items include clippers, combs, shears, toenail clippers, dog shampoo, conditioner and dog toothpaste. They should all be readily available at the larger pet supply retailers.

Before clipping your pet, take a look at a Schnauzer grooming chart. This will give you an idea of how to get the look that’s associated with this breed of dog.

It’s also important to regularly brush your dog’s coat. If the dog isn’t brushed frequently enough, its coat can become so matted that the mats have to be cut out.

An area of grooming that’s sometimes overlooked is dental hygiene. Some dogs love having their teeth brushed. Others act like they’re being killed. Regardless to how your dog reacts, it’s an essential element in grooming.

Not brushing can lead to tooth and gum disease that can threaten the dog’s life. Be sure to use dog toothpaste. Dogs may drool sometimes, but they can’t spit. Some of the ingredients in human toothpaste may be harmful to the dog if swallowed.

Your Miniature Schnauzer will periodically need to have its nails trimmed. This is frequently included as part of the package at the groomers. If you’re going to do it yourself, be sure to get dog specific toenail clippers. You might want to get a styptic pencil too.

The thing to be careful of when trimming nails is that you don’t cut the quick. That’s where the styptic pencil comes in. Even the pros occasionally make a mistake!

Another, sometime unpleasant, aspect of dog grooming is expressing the anal glands. The anal glands are two small sacs located on either side of the dog’s anus. They secrete a fluid into the feces during the dog’s bowel movement. This fluid produces a scent unique to that dog.

When this fluid isn’t released it begins to thicken and can lead to infection. For the dogs health it’s important that the groomer or vet periodically removes the fluid.

Pet owners need to make sure that all of these aspects of dog grooming are addressed. This will lead to a happier, healthier Miniature Schnauzer.

Must-Have Dog Grooming Supplies

By bringing a dog into your domestic household, you are responsible to take care of its needs. Other than feeding it, its cleanliness and health are essential to its well-being and also not pose as a hazard to your home. As more owners are treating their pets as part of the family, dog grooming supplies are abounding in the market to cater to needs to pamper these animals. Before jumping headlong into the ocean of products, perhaps a step back is required to ascertain what you actually require to stock up for basic grooming needs.

Read up on what supplies are recommended to maintain a healthy dog based on type of breed. Normally a brush or comb is sufficient to remove knots and keep your pet’s coat shiny and tangle-free. A suitable pair of shampoo and conditioner to suit your dog’s skin and fur type is next on the list. If your animal is prone to fleas and ticks, medicated versions may be more suitable as advised by your local vet. Additional types of pest prevention and control are also available in the form of sprays and powders. To keep your dog’s hair in order and out of its eyes, a pair of sharp scissors is ideal for trimming sessions. Electric razors or shears make good alternatives in case your dog’s thick and heavy coat is too much work for the scissors.

Ears are an area worthy of attention as onset infection makes an unhappy and smelly pooch. Clean your dog’s ears as part of its bath routine. Ear wipes, drops and medicated powders thus make great additions to dog grooming supplies. Other than odors resulting from infected ears, bad breath is also a norm. Give its teeth a good brushing with a toothbrush of suitable bristles, and toothpaste. As your dog’s teeth get a good cleaning, you also enjoy some play time with him.

To maintain a healthy dog with a breath to match, more holistic approaches are catching on. Since an animal’s diet plays a major role in ensuring a long and disease-free life, natural foods are touted as better alternatives. Free from artificial additives, such foods have their origins in plants, animals or minerals. Going a step further, organic foods have evolved from being hype to reality. As pet owners treat themselves to these foods, they feel their pets deserve the same.

Choosing The Right Dog Grooming Salon

Choosing the right dog grooming salon is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. There are many things to take into consideration. You should check reviews of the location, as well as visit the salon and make sure that everything is healthy and comfortable for your pet.

The first thing to check with the salon is the employees. Make sure that they are qualified, trained, and that your pet is comfortable with them. You should also make sure that any trainees are carefully monitored, and do not handle complex tasks like nail trimming.

The next thing you need to consider is the cleanliness of the facility. Nail trimmers and fur clippers should be completely cleaned and sterilized between dogs. If electric nail files are used, the file head should be changed after each pet. It is also important that any messes made by the dogs are cleaned up immediately. This ensures the health of your dog while he is at the salon.

Finally, the right dog grooming salon should offer every service imaginable for your dog. Your dog should enjoy a flea dip, nail trimming, and a hair cut at the minimum. Some salons offer premium services such as conditioning the fur to make it sleeker and shinier. If you have a show dog, you want to be sure that the salon can follow your careful instructions for your pet, so that appearance is not altered in an undesirable way. Additionally, your dog should be treated with care, love and respect throughout its stay.

Toy poodle grooming – Part 1

Grooming your toy poodle

A poodle is very intelligent with a proud look and loving personality. They were one of my favourite dogs to groom at the shop and one of my favourite pets. They are quick to learn and easy to get use to the requirements we bring upon them for a certain look. They are eager to please you and love the attention brought upon them at grooming time.

I worked with a local shelter and on one of my visits there sat this little toy poodle with sad eyes. They said that if they did not find a home for her soon they were going to put her down. She was older and belonged to a lady that had been put in a nursery home. She came home with me. Pepper (because of the grey hair in her black fur) was a very loving companion, but she had some bad experiences with grooming and hated her paws to be touched. It is an obstacle with older dogs, but they can overcome the fear with loving attention and making groom time less stressful.

Poodles need to be brushed with a slick and pin brush daily to keep the fur matt-free and clean. The ears should be checked for cleanliness and dryness regularly to reduce problems with infection. They barely shed at all, but their skin is sensitive and needs special attention when older to stay moist and healthy. Nails should be kept trim and clipping done regularly.

Clipping should be done every six weeks. Professional grooming is best for the attention needed, but if you would like to work with them yourselves the easiest cut is the puppy clip.

Get a quality set of clippers, as the curls in their coats can be tight and catch in the teeth of the blade. Brush out the coat for a smooth and matt-free finish before using the clippers. Get a #10 blade to trim between the pads and the entire foot. This blade should also be used on the stomach, around the anus, and about an inch up the tail for a puffy ball to be formed. On the nose and around the face to just over their eyes is also the #10 blade.

On the body use a #5F blade to clip over the entire body except tail and ears. Start from the base of the tail and work up to the head slowly, then down the sides and legs. This will give an even coat that is easy to manage.

Trim around the ears with a good set of scissors. Hold the ear between your first two fingers and follow the line of the ear for even hair to that shape. Around the head shape into a bowl-like ball and at the feet for even skirt around the paws. Brush the tail to the tip and hold between your finger to trim evenly, then at the base of the tail shake it a bit to fluffy it out. Trim around the fluff to a ball-like sphere on the end.

Bathing should be done after the grooming. Bath once a week with a quality shampoo; when they become older use a good oatmeal brand for their skin’s care as well. Use a dryer and brush as you are to get a nice fluff to the coat. If you have just given a clip, check after the drying for any faults in the trim and use scissors to clean it up.
