Want To Start With Dog Shows? Show Small Dogs!
Article by Blake Kritzberg
The lights, the ring, the glamour! Ever think you might like to become involved with showing dogs? If so, then starting with “toy” or small dogs can offer a great way to enter into this hobby with fewer demands on your time and space than a larger breed might involve.
The purpose of a dog show is to compare all entered dogs of a specific breed against a pre-established, written breed standard of perfection. The winners, or Best of Breed dogs, then compete against each other for Best in Group within one of the seven basic groups to which their breed has been assigned (the Herding Group, Hound Group, Non-Sporting Group, Sporting Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group or Working Group). The winner of each group then goes on to compete for the coveted Best In Show title and hopefully, earn more points toward a Championship.
As a new entrant to the world of dog shows, you’ll find there are advantages to showing small dogs over larger dogs.
Sitting Pretty
First, small show dogs generally take less time and effort to bathe and blow dry before a show. You may think this detail almost inconsequential, but after you attend a number of shows it becomes more important. Small show dogs are also easier to lift in and out of a tub, and require less water, soap and conditioner. With the exception of long-coated breeds, less dog equals less hair, which equals less drying time. As a result, it’s possible to thoroughly bathe and groom six toy-sized show dogs, like Chihuahuas, in the time it takes to groom one large Standard Poodle show dog!
Git Along, Little Doggies
Secondly, showing small or toy dogs means you can show more dogs because they take up far less space. Each small show dog requires a small traveling crate, but crates of that size are light to transport and simple to store. Small show dogs also require the use of grooming tables, but as long as they get along, two small show dogs can share one table.
Easy Does It
The third factor is, showing small dogs requires less physicality on the part of the person handling them. You’ll seldom see small show dog handlers huffing and puffing as they race around the ring. Instead, small show dogs work harder to cover ground and keep up with the handler, whereas large show dogs cover ground in great strides, requiring the handler to work to keep up. In addition, “setting up” a small dog for viewing is a simple physical task, whereas a larger dog can involve much more effort.
As you can see, showing small dogs enjoys a bit of an advantage over showing large dogs. As a result, you may find that showing small dogs makes a very rewarding start to a downright addictive hobby that you and your mini champ can enjoy together for years.

Dog Grooming Table question by Negativ: How much did it cost you to start your own grooming salon?
I just got a job as a bather at the Petsmart grooming salon. They are sending me to their “grooming academy” in February. I was just wondering how much it would cost to start my own grooming salon? Maybe in my house – or maybe if I found the right building to buy, I’d have a business. I live in South Dakota. The groomer that I take my dog to now works out of her house – it’s really clean and nice!
So, the clippers I’d need, dryers, cages, grooming table, etc.
Anyone reading this actually a groomer? Anything you can tell me about the job? I’ve always liked giving my dog baths, giving my parents dogs baths and cutting their hair. I’m really excited to start my new job!
Answer by tankstar1985 Giving a dog a bath is much different then actually grooming. Are youw illing to do the gross stuff? Anal glads, ears so full of stuff you want to die fromt he smell? Dogs pooing peeing on you, throwing up on you? clippers, grooming table, nooses ect are all small things right now, you need to look in the long run for this. going to a school like petsmart is not going to make you a groomer in a few months, it takes YEARS of practice and patentice to et to being your own boss. You need clientele, clippers alone will un you hundreds of bucks, so do scissors, hair dryers. then cages tables ect. are you going to use your own house? water bills, electricity is used SO much while grooming. If you rent out a place, as you willing to pay for any alterations to the place as needed (a all bath tub ect)?, will they cover the bills for water hydro ect? it takes alot and many years to get to where you can run your own place. the lady I work under has been doing grooming for 10 years, on her own only 4 of those years. You need a good mentor. if you are serious about doing this. find a good doggy salaon, get out of petsmart, and get in to a real salon one who will help you learn and not just be funded by a large franchise.

Grooming you dogs paws with clippers
This is me, In my bathroom (its the only room in the house with enough light to actually show you what I’m doing) Shaving the pads of my dog Sora’s feet. He really does not like his feet touched, but he is getting much better. I put my dogs on my lap because they are so small, but if you had a large dog you could sit them on the floor or grooming table and do the same thing. always try to Scoop out the hair you never just jab the clipper straight into the paw or you could cut the dog. I do this usually at least once a month on my dogs. I’m sorry if I sound stupid. The only areas I shave on my poms (unelss there is a disaster) is their pads of their feet, and around their private areas so they dont get mats or pee & poo stuck to them. Clipping Your Dog’s Hair As Part Of Grooming Routine
Article by Richard Perkins
Clipping the hair of your dog is just as essential as it is to wash it. Some dog owners tend to shy away from this task for one reason or other. This may be based on past experiences or an attitude that makes hair clipping simply a peripheral activity. We will look at hair clipping here in general and hopefully, you will benefit from a few tips.
The first step is to get all the equipment and supplies that you will need to carry out an effective procedure. One of such equipment is a grooming table which is designed specifically for these kinds of tasks. The table can be adjusted to a height of your choice and has a leash to fasten the dog and minimize its movements while you clip. Place your dog in the middle of table and let is lie or stand. Once it has been fastened, clipping may start.
Start by clipping the body parts that are less sensitive such as the back or sides. This helps your hand gets used to the clipping while also helping relax the dog. Clip away leaving a narrow layer of hair on the dog’s body. Strive to clip evenly across the whole body. Certain parts will be sensitive and harder to clip such as between legs and so on. These will require the dog to be calmer. Fortunately, the clippers in today’s markets are fairly safe to use and will be adjusted to any height you want.
As you clip, use the opportunity to also conduct a physical examination for any swollen areas or cuts so that you may attend to them. When done well, this massage will help the dog stay calm. If cuts exist, you will need to clean with sterile material and cover it up. Be careful not to clip hair into wounds since these may carry germs.
The size and type of dog has influence on the type of clipper you want to use. A small dog will probably need only a medium duty clipper but a large dog may do well with a heavy duty clipper. Heavy duty clippers have high speeds and are suitable when you want to do a lot of clipping quickly. If you are new to dog clipping you should start with lighter clippers before switching to heavy duty.
Since there will be a lot of hair after you clip, you should determine in advance how you will handle this. Small children should not be nearby when you clip. They might try eating the hair and this can be very dangerous. Work where is easy to collect after you clip. If you are doing it outdoors, you should determine in advance the wind directions to minimize the fur or hair that will be blown into your face or clothes.
Finally, create sufficient time to clip your dog’s hair as part of the grooming routine. If you are hard pressed for time, you can use professional people to do this for you. The best way to create time usually is to have a regular schedule for clipping.
This Professional 48" Grooming Arm with Clamp is a grooming necessity. The sturdy clamp keeps post secure and stable. The adjustable Arm is made from heavy gauge 3/4" aluminum square. Clamp will fit table tops up to 1 1/4" thick. Helps to secure dog on table making the grooming process safer, easier and faster. You will need a Grooming restraint loop (2nd image) to attach to ring at top of arm (purchased separately). 3rd image shows arm and loop in use.

Love your dog and want to know what other people are searching for in dogs?
Article by Bruce Dwyer
DOG’s are loved in America. See the latest dog trends hereThis report is the first in a series of dogs online demand reports. It uses Google data for exact searches in three of the highest dog ownership countries: Australia, America and the UKThe reason that the online market is looked at is that the web is often the first place that people go for information, it provides a complete picture of the dog market/ industry. It can also be resolved weekly / monthly in almost real time. Google data is used because it is the leading search engine and provides the most complete list of terms for which people search. This research helps show how the market for ‘DOG associated’ terms on Google changes throughout the year and how the America compares with the UK / Australia.
Google exact search data is used for ALL languages in each country under analysis. To get a feel for the total dog industry, all of the terms related to DOGS in each country were summed each month. This means that for every month we can get an understanding of how the demand for the total dog associated market changes throughout the year. For instance The USA in 2010 had around 621 dog associated terms, while the UK had 800 (Google’s current maximum data) and Australia had 365 terms.
To visually compare the three countries, Australia and the UK terms needed to be multiplied to reach a similar absolute number of searches to the USA values each month. Australia’s total dog associated searches were multiplied by ten and the UK searches by 2. America clearly has the largest absolute number of ‘dog associated searches’ in the world with a peak near 3.2 million searches a month in Jan and October 2010. USA and the UK have quite a similar trend throughout the year, both starting and finishing on relatively high volumes, with a very pronounced search demand trough in the middle of the year (JUNE). Australia follows almost the reverse trend peaking in August. To get an understanding of the ‘demand shape’ or how important the top terms are, the top fifty searches in each country make up the majority volume of searches. For example in Australia in October 2010, the top 50 volume dog associated terms accounted for 70% of the searches of the top 365 dog associated terms.
From all the data available it appears that there may be a Christmas effect that provides a peak in all countries leading up to the Christmas period – ie purchases of puppies for children and family..
What are people searching for in Dogs? The table below shows the top 10 dog related search terms in Oct 2010. The order is similar for most months.
AMERICA………………VOL…….UK………………..VOL……….AUSTRALIA……….VOL[dogs]…………………246,000…[dogs trust]. ………110,000…..[dog]…………..22,200[dog]……. …………..135,000…[dogs]. ……………..90,500……[dog breeds]…….14,800[dog breeds]…. ……..110,000…[puppies for sale]…..90,500……[dog games] …….12,100[dog names]…………..90,500….[dogs for sale] ……..74,000……[dogs for sale]….9,900[pictures of dogs]…….40,500….[battersea dogs hm]..60,500……[dog names] …….9,900[bernese mountain dog]40,500….[dog breeds]. ………40,500……[dog training] ….4,400[dogs for sale]………..33,100….[dog games]. ……….40,500……[adopt a dog] …..3,600[dog games] ………….33,100….[dog beds]. ………..27,100……[dog grooming]……2,400[female dog names] …..33,100….[dog insurance]……18,100……[bernese (M) dog]…2,400[dog training]………..27,100….[dog rescue]. ………18,100……[female dog names]..2,400
From the table you can see that the term ‘dog’ and ‘dogs’ are overwhelmingly the largest search term in and America (246,000), second in UK (90,500) and top in Australia (22,200). Other common points are the term ‘dog breeds’ (second in Australia, third in America, sixth in UK) and ‘dogs for sale’ (fourth in Australia, seventh in America, fourth in UK).
You will notice that there are also many more searches in people looking for ‘dog breeds’ and ‘dogs for sale’ than there are for ‘dog training’ (Australia sixth, America tenth, UK twenty first). That said, in the UK the top term ‘dog trust’ relates to “The UK’s largest dog welfare charity, outreach programs, education, information, dogs for re-homing, legislation and campaigning.”
The number of search terms in a dog related data set have to do with the terms reaching a consistent minimum volume of searches. In Australia ‘dog related’ terms were 365, America 621 and UK had 800 terms. This can either mean that a country just has a ‘long tail’ or search pattern of many diverse terms, or indicates that the country has a high performing market. In a future article we will see that on a ‘per capita’ basis that the UK leads the world in dog associated searches, and so the maximum rating of 800 terms is well justified (particularly since the UK only has one fifth of the USA’s population).
CONCLUSION
There are very similar dog associated terms that people search for across these three highly developed English speaking countries. America / USA has by far the largest percentage of searches for the generic ‘dogs’ top term. The fact that ‘dog training’ is so low on each populations search priority in the dog world is of concern. A dog purchase should be a ‘one off’ event, but dog training and learning effective boundary setting and discipline should be an on-going quest. Perhaps this plus the absence of ‘dog walking’ queries in the highest search terms suggests why there are so many dogs with behavioral and social interaction issues?
Ironically there are very few ‘bad’ dogs in society, it’s just that some owners don’t seem to have the time or skills set to meet their ownership commitment and appropriately care for their dogs. Since meaningful exercise (dog walking, dog play) is the first part of the equation to a well balanced dog, neglecting this is often the cause of dogs and owners suffering and dogs being given away.
