Dog Grooming: Behavioral Benefits of a Regular Schedule
Dog Grooming Supplies

Most pet owners know that the way a dog is treated can have a serious impact on the animal’s behavior, and dog grooming is no exception. A regular grooming schedule not only keeps your pet healthy, it can also improve the dog’s temperament. Working to ensure that your dog has positive grooming experiences will help him or her be comfortable in many social situations, and it can also deepen the bond between you and your pet.

The care provided to a dog through dog grooming provides the basic foundation training that your dog needs to become comfortable with being touched. If your pooch is uncomfortable having her paws or ears handled, a regular routine will teach her that she doesn’t have to be afraid. Long-haired breeds can quickly develop painful mats and tangles in their fur if it isn’t brushed regularly, and this can lead to a dog that shies away from being touched because the dog has learned that petting can hurt.

Regular dog grooming can also help you learn to communicate better with your pet. As you learn to respond to Fido’s needs, he also learns acceptable ways of letting you know when he is uncomfortable or in pain. As your dog becomes accustomed to a scheduled routine and around grooming tools you may find that he behaves more calmly in other social situations as well such as when children approach and want to play with the puppy’s ears or tail. If your dog has already learned to be comfortable having her ears handled or being around dog grooming clippers, she can take this in stride and stay calm through the attention.

Eventually, you may find that your pet dozes off during your dog grooming sessions. This provides excellent behavioral conditioning for your pet as well. Some dogs have been known to wake abruptly, and even snap or growl, when they are touched while sleeping. Continuing the dog grooming session while your pet dozes helps the dog learn that being awakened by a touch is nothing to be afraid of.

If you have never groomed a dog before, it is best to find a professional groomer that your dog likes. The groomer can teach you how to care for your dog, and can give you tips and advice on the tools you will need to do the job at home. Some breeds need to be groomed more than others, and some breeds may actually suffer if they are groomed too often. Your groomer and your veterinarian can both provide you with information on your specific dog’s needs, and help make the experience enjoyable for both you and your pet. They can also recommend the proper dog grooming supplies and tools required to get the job done the right way.

The best part about setting a regular grooming routine for your dog is that it makes having a dog more enjoyable. Clean, well-groomed dogs are a pleasure to snuggle and cuddle up with, and the extra attention goes a long way toward establishing a life-long bond between you and your pet. While grooming your dog may be challenging at times, and you may lose your patience sometimes stick with it. The benefits of dog grooming are well worth the effort!

Dog Grooming Supplies question by cnj4ever: Which dog grooming tools should i buy?
Okay I am currently a bather at Petsmart and I am about to go to grooming school here shortly. I just don’t know which clippers/shears/blades to buy. Everyone in my groom shop says Oysters over heat even though they are very fast and powerful. They also need alot of maintenence. And andis are low maintence but not as much power as Oyster. And as far as shears I have no Idea which ones to get. I heard Paw Brothers are nice at first but stiffen up very quickly. I dont know about bladesd either…ceramic or metal? which sizes should I start out with. I am just looking for something that will last me for a while but not break the wallet? I know grooming supplies are expensive but I dont want clippers that cost me like 400 bucks either. so if you have any suggestions on a GREAT starter kit, let me know.

Answer by Rotten Rotts
The school should tell you exactly what you need as far as blades and sizes of sheers .Your clippers have allot to do with which one fits best in your hand, so do your sheers. Oster and Andes are about the same quality, I have used both. I never like Paw Brothers, they just did not fit my hands. I spent a bloody fortune on sheers so before you buy try some out at school before you buy them.
Ask the Pet Smart groomers to let you try theirs out. Remember you will be doing this all day for years to come and you don’t want to end up with carpel tunnel or arthritis like me.

Dog Grooming Tools question by XoXo: What grooming tools do you recommend for a short haired dog?
Ex: Beagle.

Answer by LSZ
I have a boxer and found that most brushes didn’t do the job or just irritated him. I bought him a rubber curry comb used on horses and a dandy brush. You brush with the curry comb in a circular motion and watch the hair fly! Then finish off with the dandy brush to smooth things down. He loves it, (It’s like a massage) and his coat looks amazing.

Dog Grooming Ideas: Top Five Tips on Controlling Your Dog in the Bath

Perhaps one of the greatest misconceptions about dog grooming is that dogs like and actually enjoy bathing as compared to cats. While felines clearly show abhorrence for water, some dogs may feel just exactly the same. Fido, Spot, Bingo, or Rocky may not be up for taking a swim in a little old tub, so if youre a dog lover why not try these fool-proof dog grooming ideas that can help control your little pooches in the bath?

Tip number one:

Remember that by all possible means, your dog will try to weasel its way out of the water. Do not even assume that your pet will cooperate and just sit and roll over as you attempt to douse it with some water and shampoo. This will only make it easier for your pet to escape. A good follow up for this tip is to decrease your dogs anxiety. Forget that youre the boss or master. Show your dog some compassion by joining it in the bath or by bring playthings as reward for being obedient.

Tip number two:

Another excellent dog grooming idea that can help control your dog in the bath is to not over coerce your dog into staying in the tub. This will only bring disastrous results, such as turning your bathroom into an unrecognizable mess and soaking you with water. Look at it this way: you are potty training your little pup and would not want to seem too threatening. Try to convince the dog by giving it the idea that water is fun. Use toys and treats. Use reprimands only in extreme cases— you do not want your dog to have any water-related traumas! The result of this will be rewarding. Your dog will actually stay in the tub. If youre worried about getting too much water around the tub, make sure to lay out towels around it.

Tip number three:

To be able to make the most of your dogs bath, one good thing to consider is the strategic placing of all the necessary bathing tools. This will let you devote your time and attention to your dog and not to looking for shampoo, soap, and towels! This will also allow you to work at a more leisurely pace, making your dog feel at ease. Remember that a seemingly frantic dog groomer will only trigger your pets anxiety.

Tip number four:

If faced with a very stubborn and uncooperative dog, the best dog grooming idea that can help control your dog in the bath is to use a leash. A leash will give you the advantage of having both hands to lather up your dog. It also doesnt seem threatening and coercive, since it is a familiar tool your dog encounters almost every day. Just make sure it isnt too tight.

Tip number five:

Imagine all possible blunders that may happen after giving your pooch a bath. This may include soaking you with water because of shaking and getting out of the bathroom to go to dirty areas with soil. Such incidences will defeat the purpose of your bath. Always remember to have more than one towel ready so that you can dry your dog before you leave the bathroom. Also do not forget to close the door, as your pet might make a mad dash away from the shower. Make sure your dog is mostly dry before you leave the confines of your bathroom.

Hopefully, these dog grooming ideas will help control your dog in the bath. These are just a few tips if how you can maximize bath time with your dogs. You can be creative and come up with other strategic ideas of your own.
