I have known about Boston’s most of my life. I knew them as cute small bulldog looking dogs. When I decided that I wanted a dog, I was noticing that one of my nieces had a pair of Boston’s for her kids. I asked why Boston’s. The answer was simple, the vet recommended them. I found that many vets considered the Boston one of their favorites. In fact, one day I was last in the office with my Boston. The vet’s staff commented that it had been a good day because the first patient was a Boston and the last patient was a Boston.

A friend who is a dog groomer also loves the breed and I asked her to find me a Boston puppy. I became like an expectant parent again. First, was the gender. I chose male. Next the name, Thomas Jackson “Jack.” The name is for two of my heroes in history: Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and John F. “Jack” Kennedy. A litter of puppies was found and we went to pick one out. Jack is brindle and white in his coloration.

When he joined the household, there were three cats to whip him into shape. It wasn’t long before the pecking order was established and Jack was at the bottom, but he still tried to be friendly with the cats. Upon discovering that a son and a grandson were extremely allergic to the cats, we had to give them up. Jack became the “top dog.”

Another friend once said, “Can you imagine not having a dog.” The beauty of ownership of a dog and especially a Boston is the companionship. I am convinced that Jack understands every word that I say to him. He is constantly trying to please us and he absolutely adores our grandsons.

I am one who does not think that this truly all-American breed should be called a Boston Bull or Boston Bull Terrier. He is a Boston Terrier, known affectionately by us as “Jack Dogs”. My wife and I will recommend Boston Terriers to almost any family. He should not be kept out side. His short nose makes it difficult to help lower his body temperature, when hot. And maintain heat when it is cold. Care for a Boston is simple. An occasional bath when he gets that doggy odor. Light brushing will take care of some of the shedding which is little. The selection of good quality dog food is important. Treats are a must for good behavior and training. Boston’s need chew toys, if you don’t want to loose shoes and furniture.
