If you are anything like me, you love your dogs and want to keep them groomed as best as possible. Unfortunately, crating, packing up the car and then traveling to the nearest groomer can be stressful to both yourself and your dog, not to mention costly. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to provide your dog a top quality grooming experience in the comfort of your own home? I am going to share with you 3 easy steps that will allow you to begin dog grooming on your own.

Step 1: Learn to Brush. Brushing is the foundation of proper pet grooming, not only does brushing help your dog’s skin and coat health, it will also create a strong bond between you and your dog. Breed standards and coat will determine how often you should be brushing but a basic guideline is to brush daily for silky or long coated dogs and to brush one to two times a week for a short or curly coated dog.

Step 2: Give your dog a bath. Luckily for us, dogs in general tend to be happy to get into water and this makes bathing a snap compared to other home pets. The rule of thumb is that a dog should be bathed every 2 months or so and definitely no more than once per month. The reason for such long periods between bathing is to protect your dog’s natural oils. These oils are what allow dogs to be such great swimmers and also what allows their fur to keep them warm. In the warmest months of the summer, longer haired dogs may require washing as often as every two weeks but if so, it is important to use high quality pet shampoo’s to protect their natural oils and keep their skin from becoming irritated.

Step 3: Dry out your dog’s coat. When drying a dog most people choose to use a towel however it is perfectly fine to use a blow dryer or even a combination of the two. While keeping a calm tone, remove excess water by commanding the dog to shake or by simply petting the dog in long strokes that push out the excess water from the coat. Once excess water is removed, use towels to hand dry the dog from the head to the back and then from the sides to the underside, chest, legs and tail.

In this article I have shared the three basic steps of successful dog grooming: brushing, washing and drying. As always, consult your dog’s breed standard before grooming to ensure the highest level of care. Brushes, combs, clippers, ribbons and bows: what do we know about grooming our dog? A groomed dog is a happy dog, and just like people, your dog will feel better if they are clean and well groomed.

Grooming your dog yourself can easily be done at home with a little practice. Brushing your dog is a good start. With several different brushes available to the consumer, you will have to choose the one that works best for your dogs hair coat. Brushing your dog removes dirt and loose hair and prevents mats from forming. Unfortunately, sometimes those mats are already there and they need to be removed before bathing the dog. Carefully clean your dogs eyes and gently wipe out your dogs ears, noticing if there is any redness or tenderness to the ears. If there is an odor coming from the ears, or your dog seems to be in pain, seek out a veterinarians advice.

Check your dogs teeth, and again check with your veterinarian for instructions on keeping them clean.

Toenails that grow too long can be painful for a dog, so use a toenail clipper made just for dogs to clip them. You can find these clippers at stores where pet products are sold.

Now your dog is ready for the bath. Be careful not to get water in the dogs ears and eyes. Thoroughly wet its coat and apply shampoo made for dogs. Gently lather the dogs hair coat; once lathered be sure to rinse the shampoo out completely. Dry your dogs coat with an absorbent towel, or if you have a long haired dog, consider using a blow dryer. After bathing, your pet needs to be patted down with a designated, super absorbent towel and a quick blow dry. You may even want to invest in a commercial dog blow dryer that comes on a stand that the dog can be strapped into. This is a real aid for long haired dogs and their owners, since drying time can be prolonged. It is important to dry the dog’s coat quickly before it develops tangles and become matted.

Brushes and combs

Brushes and combs are important not only as a beauty aid to provide a silky coat but for maintaining a healthy coat. Even short haired breeds must have regular brushing to remove excess hair that allows the skin to breath. Brushing with a soft brush feels good, calms the dog and makes the coat shine. But using a hard wire brush and/or comb, is the only way to remove debris and tangles. It is also a good way to check for ticks, fleas and other parasites. The brush or comb may be made of metal or hard plastic but must have fine enough to ferret out those invaders and stand up to tangles without breaking.

Dog toenail clippers

Dog toenail clippers are a must have and come in scissor or guillotine style. They should be used biweekly or more often, according to how fast the nails grow. Keeping your pets nails trimmed will prevent nail splitting.

Scissors and trimmers

Scissors and trimmers should be specially designed for your breed of dog. Scissors should be blunt ended to avoid possible injury from a jumpy pet and trimmers must be strong enough to do the job efficiently. Get an electric trimmer with enough power to quickly shave and trim areas of dense fur without clogging and stalling.
