Dog Grooming Tools question by BiGjOe: what grooming tools do you use to groom a beagle?
A beagle is a short haired dog and it uses different brushes then a long haired dog. What brush do I use and what is it called. Also… does a flea comb and a tooth tar tar remover help?

Answer by Dances With Woofs!
A hound glove, steel comb and soft bristled brush are all you need. And nail clippers! Brush the dog’s teeth if he will let you,and clean the ears once a week to prevent ear infections. Vet Solutions makes a good ear cleaner. You can get it from your vet. the flea comb is good if the dog has fleas, but a monthly flea spot on,like Frontline will prevent fleas. And don’t forget monthly heartworm preventative and vaccinations!

How to groom a beagle

5466818444 32564515f4 m How to groom a beagle

Most people believe that when buying a short haired dog they are getting a pet with little maintenance when the reality is that a short haired breed of dog such as the beagle sheds a lot sometimes year round depending on the climate where you and your beagle make your home. So if you do not want your friends and family to think you have a new designer sofa made from fur then you need to follow a consistent routine of brushing and other required grooming tasks.

The Beagle needs to be bathed only every three to four months; however the ears need to be cleaned weekly, this is especially important in a drop-eared type of dog such as the Beagle. The reason for this is that because of the weight of the ear and the fact that the flap covers the whole ear, very little air gets into the ear canal resulting in an ear that is persistently moist; ideal conditions for an ear infection. Your beagle’s ears can be cleaned by using commercially available dog ear cleaner and several clean cotton balls, place a few drops of ear cleaner on the cotton ball and gently wipe out the ear paying special attention to the crevices. Never insert anything into the ear canal itself or pour ear cleaner directly into the ear. Follow with a clean dry cotton ball until you no longer see dirt on it.

Your beagle’s nails should be checked monthly to see if they need clipping. Dogs that spend enough time walking on hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete need less regular nail trims if at all. If you are not comfortable clipping your beagles nails yourself it is easy enough to drop by a grooming salon or have them done when you are at the vet’s office.

The most time-intensive part of grooming your beagle is going to be brushing. Regular brushing will cut down on the amount of shedding your dog does and it also plays a vital role in keeping your beagle in tip-top condition with a healthy, shiny coat. Keep to a regular brushing schedule with your pet, twice weekly is ideal but once a week is certainly sufficient. You will need a rubber tipped brush such as a Zoom Groom to properly brush your beagle’s coat.Starting at the top of your dog’s head and using short firm strokes brush your beagles coat in the direction of the hair growth. Continue brushing in this manner until there is no more dead and flyaway hair coming off. If this is the first time using a rubber tipped brush on your dog you will be amazed at how much hair you pick up. Enough to make another beagle!

As you can see having a short haired dog does not lessen your responsibilities in the grooming department but without the extra expense of regular haircuts that longer haired dog’s owners incur it is certainly less expensive and very manageable.

Basic caring and grooming tips for your puppy

FOR THE PUPPY SEARCHER

My most exciting thrill is connecting a new pet with a new owner! In the last 25 years, I have worked professionally as a pet groomer/shop owner. My customers have become my friends; and if I had any advice I would say,”Do your homework!”.

For example an Old English Sheepdog is one of the fluffiest, cutest pups-in its first 2 months before size, hair, chewing begins. The breed is wonderful, but not for everyone. It seems there is a pattern when a movie portrays a dog that that breed becomes the “popular” breed. A great example is “Shiloh”. Suddenly I was inundated with beagles! Now I love beagles as I have a great appreciation for almost all breeds. I say the average family hasn’t a clue on the training needed for a beagle. This breed is very hyper outdoors: a one-minded dog, especially when he is “on the scent”. There is no reasoning with a beagle who is “on the scent” of anything! And having him return to you before he finds his scent…Good Luck!

Today a popular characteristic in a dog is whether its fur is hypo-allergenic or rather your “non=shedding” type. Breeds such as Maltese, Poodles, Lhasa Apso , Tibetan Terriers, Wheaton Terriers, Portuguese Water Dogs, Shih – tzus , etc are a few examples of non-shedders . Obviously these breeds are popular due to people not having an allergic reaction to their coat.

Now these breeds may not shed (“shed” being defined as having hair fall onto your floor); but they do have a cotton “undercoat” that loosens itself and gets tangled or “matted” in the longer outer coat. Thus you are in for a lifetime of having your pet

groomed every 1-2 months at a cost ranging from $35-$70 or more. If this procedure doesn’t take place, your loving pet with be a walking cast of matts (tangles) that tighten every time they move or get moist.

I can hear some customers say,”I don’t spend that much on my own hair!”. To which my response is like a knee jerk reaction,” When’s the last time your hair dresser expressed your anal glands, cleaned your ears, clipped your nails, brushed all your matts out ‘all’ over your body-as in ..everywhere?!” Think of all the grooming our bodies need (some more than others) ..well so does our furry friends.

It may sound trite, but having a pet is more than food, shelter, and grooming. Most dogs can have an incredible intelligence level, a huge vocabulary, and are a social pack animal -as are we. The responsibility for social interaction with owners is all the more important because dogs are a social animal. This pet’s intelligence is to be compared with a child- some only 1-2 years old; yet some have higher IQ’s than some teenagers I’ve met. So don’t neglect interaction: play, time spent, and acknowledging them.

Alas, pet lovers just need to be aware of what they are getting into before they make the 10-15 year commitment. Let it be known that smaller dogs tend to live the longest. Although my client does have a 19 year old labrador, so you never really know how long the commitment will be.

Please don’t make the decision lightly! Be committed!

Bathtime for pet dogs

Your dog will require bathing from time to time. Dogs do clean themselves to the best of their ability. Regardless of if the pet is kept indoors or outdoors, it will need a bath!

To determine how often to bath your dog, do a little research on the breed. I have a beagle and a redbone. My beagle should have a bath once a month. This in addition to regular brushing and possibly a dry bath. However, my redbone can be bathed less often. His coat is always beautiful, and he smells good, it sounds funny but we call him the ” Pumpkin Pie Puppy”, as he smells sweet, spicy and like pumpkin always.

It is easy to clean a small dog in your kitchen sink. Medium sized dogs can be placed in a bath tub with little effort. Large breeds are a lot more difficult to bath. If you have a large dog, you will want help to safely place your dog in your bath tub. Your dog will be fine, it is the act of getting him in the bath that is difficult. If you are assertive, calm and in control your dog will cooperate with you. If you find the bathing process to be too difficult, enlist the service of a professional groomer.

You must keep in mind that your dog will not need a hot bath. Some breeds can suffer skin damage from hot water. Dog shampoo is fine to use. Don’t use soap on your dog! Soap will dry out the dogs coat. Bubble bath is great as an alternative to soap, as bubble bath does not contain soap. Bubble bath is available in so many fantastic scents, you can have a uniquely scented dog! I love Avon bubble bath for my dogs.

Also pay attention to not get anything in the dogs eyes, and gently clean his ears. As you are finished with the bath, place your dog on a towel, or assist the dog from the bath tub. Make sure you get your dog really dry, and you probably won’t want to go for a walk immediately, as your dog will want to roll around and get dirty again. Chances are after the bath, you will have a happy, frisky dog. Be prepare for lots of running and playing. After your dog has exhausted himself from running around, you might be able to trim the nails easily. You must be careful not to cut the quick, or where the veins in the nail are. You should either pick up the clippers designed for a dogs nail, pay a groomer , or your vet to clip the nails safely. If you cut too far, your dog will bleed from his nail. In some instances, dogs have bled to death from this kind of injury.

If you maintain a regular grooming schedule, your dog will not fight you. Bathtime should be a fun event, not torture.
