Why Should You Groom Your Dog?

Article by Richard Perkins

Most people who own dogs always create time to groom them and will give you reasons for doing this. For some, grooming is about making sure the dog looks good, others do it to ensure the dog stays healthy while others are motivated by a desire to bond with the dog. On the opposite extreme are those who do not groom their dogs either because they are busy, or do not see the need for doing it, or any other reason. So, why it is important to groom your dog?

Let us start by defining what dog grooming is. Dog grooming basically refers to the process of cleaning and making the dog tidy. This includes all activities that you do to remove dirt, and improve the appearance of the dog in general. Why is this process important? The most important reason why you should groom your dog is the fact that it helps keep the dog healthy. Ask any veterinarian and you will be told that your dog needs to be bathed regularly to stay healthy. Bathing helps remove dirt but more than that, it prevents the dog from developing skin infection.

When a dog goes without bathing for a while, the dirt will cause it to start itching and scratching which in turn leads to skin abrasions that can become septic. And if a dog has infection such as thrush for instance, it is easier to prevent further infection if it is clean than if it is dirty.

Besides bathing, other grooming activities are also quiet beneficial. Brushing and combing for instance makes a dog look more attractive. This again is not the only reason why you should brush or comb it. When a dog is not brushed especially if it has long hair/fur, the fibers get intertwined, a condition commonly known as matting. Matting would not have been much of an issue had it not been that it creates its own problems. One of such is that it locks dirt in and increase chances of your dog itching. It is also quiet hard to wash a dog when there is matting.

You are probably asking, suppose my dog already has matting, what should I do? Brushing will help if the tangles are not very tight. However, if matting has gone on for a while without remedial action, then you will only hurt the dog as you attempt to brush or comb. The solution in this case is to undertake a different grooming activity: hair clipping.

Hair clipping is the best option when your dog’s hair/ fur is very tightly intertwined. But clipping has other benefits including making it easier to clean the dog and improving the looks of your dog. There are hair clippers specifically designed for dogs. Besides clipping of hair/fur, it is also recommended that you trim the nails. Long nails when unchecked will curve inwards and may result in injury as the dog walks by piercing into its feed pads.

Finally, nothing will bond your dog and you than grooming. The prolonged, massage like touch will increase the faithfulness of your faithful friend!

dog grooming question by jane: what does a blocking blade do for dog grooming ?
I read that its good for “skimming” and what does that for dog grooming ?

Answer by princess_dragon_tears
In grooming, skimming is when you use the clippers almost like scissors. You skim the hair of the dog to get the shape and length you want with no scissor work required. It really does take a lot of practice, skill and a steady hand though. It’s also important if you’re using a blocking blade NOT to clip down to the skin. The teeth are way too wide and you run a high risk of cutting your dog if you aren’t professionally trained. For that I would recommend any #10 blade. What breed are you using this for anyway?

Four Reasons Why You Should Groom Your Dog
dog grooming

Dog grooming is widely practiced by many dog owners for various reasons. How and what kind of grooming people do differs from person to person, some because of time, others because they love their dogs while others are motivated by real benefits. I will outline here four simple reasons why you really need to groom your dog. And just so you know, you will realize that some benefits are for you!

The first and most important reason is the dog’s health. Dog grooming, especially bathing obviously removes dirt which is a direct health benefit. More than just the removal of dirt, washing of dogs reduces conditions such as itching, which results in scratching. When this goes unchecked, the dog may develop skin infections such as thrush. A simple wash with shampoo will prevent this and keep the dog healthy. If you keep your dog clean, you will no longer worry having it inside your house, on your couch, or even your bed.

The second reason for grooming is the prevention of matting. Matting basically refers to the tendency of hair on dogs to get tangled up. This is common in long haired dogs. Simple grooming activities like bathing which involves use of a brush, brushing and combing of a dog on a regular basis will significantly reduce the incidences of matting. If on the other hand you do not groom your dog, the tangling can become so bad that it becomes very painful to try fixing them. This is not to mention the fact that mats form a good habitat for dirt and its associated problems discussed above. Ironically, the only solution to serious matting is another grooming procedure hair clipping.

The third reason for grooming your dog is its general appearance. In the same way that grooming improves how we look, which explains the presence of mirrors in our homes, your dog’s appearance is highly dependent on how well you groom it. Washing, combing, hair and nail clipping all play a key role in giving your dog that shinny attractive look.

The forth and equally important reason for grooming your dog is emotional attachment. The process of grooming requires that you touch your dog for prolonged periods, and bathing even has a massage effect. These procedures will connect your dog with you at deep levels than most people realize. Many people are amazed about stories of dogs saving lives of their owners at times of distress by raising the alarm. Do not be, that dog knows its owner at an emotional level, it can detect distress.

Having a dog, or any pet for that matter, at home comes with a responsibility. It’s like having an additional member of the family. As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to take good care of your pet. If you are new to being a dog owner, you are going to need to need any dog grooming tips you can get. The information above will help you take care of your dog through proper grooming.

How to Sharpen Dog Grooming Thinning Shears

The term thinning’ in the world of hair styling and maintenance is to thin the appearance of hair without altering the initial hairstyle. This term is also applicable to dogs, as some tend to have thick or bushy hair which can be thinned. In order to do this, you will need to use a pair of dog grooming thinning shears, one that looks like a pair of scissors with blades that look like metal combs. Nevertheless, it would require frequent sharpening to keep it sharp.

What you will need to sharpen your thinning shears is a sharpening device, a wand sharpener, honing oil, and a rag.

To sharpen, you will need to lay your shear’s flat blade into the scissors slot, and adjust the slot to clamp onto the blade firmly. Next, turn on the grinding wheel and put it to the sharpening and deburring setting. Allow the device to run, and then turn off when it is completed. After that, you will need to sharpen each comb blade of the dog grooming thinning shears using a wand sharpener, which looks like a long, narrow stick that would fit between each tooth. Using the wand sharpener, slide it between each tooth by sliding it in and out of the slots. This needs to be done for about four to six times for each blade to be able to remove all the burrs and get it well sharpened.

Consecutively, have the shears rinsed with cold water. Make sure it is dried well before applying a thin layer of honing oil onto the blades. Then, use a rag to wipe off any debris as a result of the sharpening process. Last but not least, keep your shears well lubricated, especially after each use. Do pay attention to not only the blades, but the center screw as well so that you will not have much difficulty parting the blades.

Choosing The Right Dog Grooming Salon

Choosing the right dog grooming salon is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. There are many things to take into consideration. You should check reviews of the location, as well as visit the salon and make sure that everything is healthy and comfortable for your pet.

The first thing to check with the salon is the employees. Make sure that they are qualified, trained, and that your pet is comfortable with them. You should also make sure that any trainees are carefully monitored, and do not handle complex tasks like nail trimming.

The next thing you need to consider is the cleanliness of the facility. Nail trimmers and fur clippers should be completely cleaned and sterilized between dogs. If electric nail files are used, the file head should be changed after each pet. It is also important that any messes made by the dogs are cleaned up immediately. This ensures the health of your dog while he is at the salon.

Finally, the right dog grooming salon should offer every service imaginable for your dog. Your dog should enjoy a flea dip, nail trimming, and a hair cut at the minimum. Some salons offer premium services such as conditioning the fur to make it sleeker and shinier. If you have a show dog, you want to be sure that the salon can follow your careful instructions for your pet, so that appearance is not altered in an undesirable way. Additionally, your dog should be treated with care, love and respect throughout its stay.
