Poodles have been a popular amongst MILLIONS of people around the globe. Poodles are just wonderful dogs. They are glorious dogs with great features. I will state their features and explain more about this great breed of dog. Poodles, wow, are you serious?

Poodles come in three different sizes. They can be toy poodles, miniature poodles or the standard poodles. Poodles are dogs with the non shedding feature. This feature is admired by dog breeders so this feature makes this dog popular in the breeding process. They are usually bred for their non shedding feature. They have an allergen free feature as well which makes them compatible with people who have allergies with dogs. The toy poodles, miniature poodles, and standard poodles look the same, the only difference being, the sizes of these dogs. The poodles have a wiry coat of fur which needs to be groomed daily and the poodle should be bathed after every other day or if they are dirty. The poodle comes in a variety of colors like white, cream, blue, brown, tan, black and some other bright and dark colors. The poodle is known to be one of the world’s most intelligent dog breed there is. This is also a feature which makes it popular.

The toy poodle is the smallest version of the poodle. The toy poodle is really smart and is a popular choice among dog lovers. The appearance is the same like all the other poodles. It can come in a variety of colors. It needs to be groomed daily and bathed as needed. Since it is small it might have to go to the bathroom more. It might be around 13 inches tall. The toy poodle makes an excellent watch dog because it has a high pitched bark. If you live in an apartment this poodle would be an excellent choice but it should be trained not to bark because if it does bark a lot then the people next door will come and complain so Beware. It is still a great dog.

The miniature poodle is the medium sized poodle. The miniature poodle is also really smart and looks the same as the toy poodle and the standard poodle. The miniature might be around 20 inches tall. The miniature poodle makes for an excellent watch dog because it does bark a lot. Also, the owner should groom this dog everyday and give it a bath as needed. The miniature poodle is also a great dog for the apartment life because it is also pretty small. Two words “Great Dog.”

The standard poodle is the biggest of them all. The standard poodle is intelligent and stands around 30 inches. The standard poodle is a popular choice among dog owners. This poodle makes an excellent watch dog as well because it barks a lot. Like the other types of poodles it needs to be groomed daily and bathed as needed.

Here you have it the great features of the toy poodle, miniature poodle, and the standard poodle. Remember that the poodle needs to be groomed daily and that it is a really lovable dog. A simple sentence would describe it, “A great dog with some great features.” The poodle has some admired features and would love to be under the care of a great dog owner.

Best dogs for kids

When choosing a pet the most important consideration is always children. Then one must think of where they live, the time they can spend with the dog, the possibility of allergies, and grooming. Of course, cost also plays a factor in choosing a dog – food, toys, veterinary bills, etc. All of these must be considered. Three breeds of dogs come to mind when children are involved: bloodhounds, poodles, and Maltese. Of course, the best breed is always a mixed-breed adopted from the local shelter.

Bloodhounds are the largest of the three purebred mentioned. They are great with children. Because of the job they have been bred to do, they are practically aggression-free. If a bloodhound ever growls or shows their teeth around children, there are two possible reasons. First check to see if the children are behaving around the dog. The even-keeled bloodhound does have it’s limitations, as does any animal – even the human kind. If the children are being responsible and respectful, there is probably a medical reason. The dog could be sick or in extreme pain. I have worked around animals for over twenty years and the only time I ever heard a bloodhound growl was when I moved a female about to give birth. Bloodhounds do well in small spaces. Although physical exercise is important to all breeds, bloodhounds prefer mental stimulation to physical stimulation. A quick ten minute daily walk is usually enough exercise. Keeping it’s mind stimulated is another matter completely. A great way to keep a bloodhound’s mind active is to have the children play hide and seek with it. This will even work in a small apartment, if the children are willing to be the ones doing all the hiding. Hiding the bloodhound’s toys is another way to keep it’s mind working; they love to search and find things.

Poodles are also great dogs for children. They are extremely smart and catch on to conversations very quickly. Poodles come in different sizes, but demand about the same amount of exercise regardless of the size. As with the bloodhound, the poodle’s mind must be stimulated. They are eager to please, so teaching the dog a few tricks is a great way to keep their quick minds occupied. Grooming a poodle is a serious issue. They need to be groomed regularly. This can be done by the owner at home, if the grooming is done on a regular schedule and the owner is careful. If grooming ever gets off schedule and mats appear, a professional groomer should be used. Poodles

Dog breed: Shed – Part 1

Some dogs may shed less hair, but there are no dogs that are completely allergen-free. My Mum is allergic to dogs so I am speaking from experience. For those who suffer from allergies you will know the discomfort that they can cause. It can make you sneeze, then your eyes may itch, the more you rub them the more they hurt but you need to rub them. Allergies can make you wheeze, all in all they are very unpleasant.

My Dad wanted a dog, my Mum was allergic so what did we do? We borrowed a toy poodle to see if she was allergic. They have wool not hair so they don`t shed. It didn`t seem to cause too many problems so off we went to buy a poodle.

Of course my Dad doesn`t like small dogs so we bought a big dog, a standard poodle. He was around 29 inches and black. Now it is true, poodles don`t shed as they have wool not fur. However the wool grows, it needs clipping. No dog hairs though so no allergies? Not quite true.

The poodle would need clipping about every six weeks. In this time he would need grooming or he would become tangled. Now he wasn`t a show dog, he was a pet. He didn`t have the extravagant coat of the show poodles, he was clipped quite close. He still became tangled if not groomed regularly. My Mum was unable to groom him as this would make her sneeze.

Dust would be the main problem here. Most people who are allergic to dogs are in fact allergic to dust also. When the dog`s wool became longer, he attracted more dust, therefore he was not allergen free. I must say though, it was much better for my Mum to have this dog than one who shed hair, but he still made her sneeze.

The other problem that my Mum had with this dog was his barking. I don`t mean it got on her nerves. What I do mean is, when he barked, his saliva would spray (very minute droplets that no-one could see). This would make my Mum sneeze and would cause irritation making her face itch. So you see, this allergy was nothing to do with shedding hair.

Anyway, my Dad then wanted a lurcher who was going to live outside, then outside at night, then she was allowed in the kitchen, then the whole house. My poor Mum. We picked a short haired lurcher who didn`t shed much. My Mum was still more allergic to the lurcher than the poodle. She would take anti-histamine tablets frequently. Whilst it was not unbearable for her, she did not enjoy it as it did make her suffer.

This short haired lurcher who didn`t shed much was groomed outside most days

Dog breed: Maltese

The Perfect Pet – My Maltese Addiction

Ten years ago I became an empty nester. Children grown and gone, husband ran off with another woman, I wanted some type of companionship, and at the time, I was favoring canine over human. I visited the local dog training school to observe the different breeds in their class. I wasn’t there more than ten minutes when I fell in love with a little Maltese.

What overwhelmed me was the dog’s personality. He was extremely smart and interactive. But what really sold me was the black button nose and the two dark round eyes that shone in contrast to his pure white coat.

I went home and studied on the internet all I could about the breed. On the plus side was that their silky white coat does not shed, and if kept clean hypoallergenic which was great for my allergies. They are playful and easily trained. On the negative side, since their hair does not shed, it will grow to the floor, so frequent grooming would be a necessity.

I found a breeder that was highly recommended and gave a call. The next weekend I drove 90 miles to see the puppies that were ready for homes. At first she brought out a puppy that just didn’t seem to respond the way I had hoped. She went to the back and brought out another and it was love at first sight.

That would be the first of my three Maltese dogs. I had an addiction, and if it weren’t for intervention of my family and friends, there would be more than three.

In the ensuing years, after I brought home the first Maltese, I learned how to groom them myself. They love to be groomed and it also serves as a time of bonding. Once you have the routine down it’s not so terribly hard. I usually keep them all in a “puppy cut” because I never wanted them with top knots and bows or their coat flowing on the floor.

They all have distinct personalities, like most dogs, but I have to say, I’ve owned many dogs of many breeds in my life and the Maltese is just superior in every way. They are little clowns that love to please. Obedient, loyal, loving, lively I could go on and on.

The average height for the breed is 8 to 10 inches, and weight is between 4 and 7 pounds. If socialized as puppies, they are good with children (I think because they consider them “more my size”). They do well in just about any living situation from apartments to huge estates. They love to play and run, are easily taught tricks and very active.

All in all, with those little button eyes and button nose, the perky loving personality, I would recommend a Maltese as a perfect pet and perfect companion.

Grooming your dog – Part 9

When you buy a dog, whether it’s big, small, hairy, or has very little hair, it needs to be groomed.

Not only is grooming essential for keeping the dogs hair healthy but it’s also a chance to bond with your pet.

As a professional pet groomer, i have come across some very dirty and matted pets over the years. Always, the answer has been, try grooming your pet!

Starting from a very young age is always the best way to get your pet used to the process of grooming, but old dogs can be taught as well.

Certain dogs have hair that doesn’t shed, therefore it will need to be clipped every 8 weeks or so. These include; all poodles, bichon frise and the labradoodle.

These breeds are ideal for asthma sufferers or people with mild allergies to dog hair.

Grooming should be an every day occurrence. It should be part of your pets routine. This way they will get used to being groomed thus making the grooming easier and more manageable.

When grooming make sure you brush in all the areas you can’t see. It’s probably easier to teach your pet to lie down, so you can get to it’s tummy and inside of the legs. This is a part that most owners miss. Then if you have your pet professionally groomed, it will also make it easier for the groomer, which in turn helps your pet.

With short haired dogs, using a grooming glove is best for loose hairs. Yes, short haired dogs shed too.

With nails, i would recommend you take your pet to a professional, unless you know what you are doing.

In the long run, grooming is best for everyone, but especially man’s best friend.
