Dog Grooming Tools question by Hyacinth: How do I properly clean my grooming tools?
What do you use, how do you do it. explain your exact procedure for blades, shears, combs, brushes, and table. Do you wipe off the residue immediately with paper towel, or let it sit and dry. do you always rinse with water? I only want to know what you actually do all the time.. 5 stars for most precise answer.

I feel like such an idiot because all this time I’ve been cleaning my tools only a little more often as other groomers I work with do. And that’s not often! In grooming school we were hardly taught it and I never saw anyone do it. When I left school I bought Clipercide and Barbacide. The other groomers including the one who was the owner for 10 years had a can of dusty clipercide on a shelf somewhere and I never saw them use it. I cleaned my tools every 3 days or so and every time after a dog with an issue or when I can see grime. Then when I started my new job I decided to get clean and do it everyday. NOW, I had no thought of doing between EVERY DOG! Please teach me. Then I will forever be 100% cleaning between every dog if I learn the correct procedure that other groomers use all the time. Thank you for understanding!

I try to clean my tools after i groom every dog, that way if a dog comes in with a skin infection or something i don’t risk spreading it to other animals through my tools.

Scissors are sprayed with a disinfectant and wiped immediately. Clipper blades are cleaned in a mixture of water and cleaner then blown off with the forced air dryer (especially the blads i use for hygiene trims). At the end of every week i oil blades and scissors and check for wear/tear.

I know some people who don’t do any of that. I always err on the side of caution and i take care of my tools. Even my combs and brushes get sprayed, rinsed, and dried! A groomer is nothing without his/her equipment (or so i was taught) so i strive to keep it clean, working, and disinfected.

That being said, i don’t think there is a “correct” or “incorrect” procedure. It depends on the groomer.

Dog Grooming Tools question by Mary R: Siberian husky grooming tools question.?
I adopted a wonderful Siberian husky back in March and I adore him despite the major shedding issue. I did my research and was aware of what I was getting into and wouldn’t change my decision if given the chance. He’s just such a great dog…there isn’t enough space here to descibe his great qualities. But on to my question, I comb him and also use a deshedding tool on him outside daily as well as vacuum my home up to twice daily (he’s an indoor dog, though we spend a lot of time outside together). His shedding is never ending or so it seams. My question is whether anyone out there knows of any grooming tools that might make life a bit easier for me in terms of time that I have to spend on his grooming? I use a comb instead of a brush because I get a lot more hair with the comb and it’s quite easy because he seems to love getting combed. My shedding tool looks just like the type used on horses and it certainly seems to do a good job. But I am wondering if there are any new grooming tools that I am not aware of. Ones that work well for huskies? Or maybe there are other things I can do? I’ve thought about buying food for him that claim to help shedding but I am doubting that they actually work. Any recommendations for me would be welcomed.

Check out the Furminator, they are kind of pricey but work great on getting the undercoat out.
Also try suplementing with fish oil & make sure you are feeding good quality grain free kibble or raw diet.

Dog Grooming Tools question by Bubbles: Where to find a small trimming grooming tool for small dogs?
I bought the normal size trimmer for my 8 pound dog and it works great on her body but I need a smaller trimmer for her legs. The video that teaches you how to groom showed a smaller pair of clippers to do the dogs legs and paws. I can’t find a smaller trimmer at Petco or Pet Stuff. Any suggestion on where to look?

Answer by lyttleravyn
Here’s a website with a few trimmers, I have the “Lola” (near the bottom): http://www.ryanspet.com/ryanspet/category.asp?categoryCode=111&

When I groom smaller dogs, I will use the clippers on the body and then sweep them gently over the tops of the legs. Then I comb/brush the legs and use shears to just trim the hair to just ‘neaten’ it up. Usually shaving the legs will make the legs look super skinny when compared to the body, if you just trim them it balances the look out. Dog Grooming Tools question by 210sheep: How Much Should I Put In?
At the end of the summer, I will be geting a show – quality puppy. I am starting a bank account to save up for it. How much money sould I put in? These are the factors that need to be considered right now:
cost of pup including shipping
Importation fees
Registration fees with the AKC, Canadian KC, KC, or Austrailian Kennel Council
Food and Water Bowls
Collar and Leash
Crate and dog bed
Ex – pen (playpen)
Grooming Tools
Toys
Dog Food
Grooming Table
What do these things cost? What else needs to be considered?

Dog Grooming Tools best answer:

Answer by abbyful
A lot of that depends on the size/breed of dog you get.

For example, a nice wire crate for a smaller dog will be around $ 50-$ 70 US. If you have a large dog, it could be up to $ 200+ US.

Registration fees are normally included in the purchase price of the dog.

For a show quality dog, you will spend somewhere between $ 1500-$ 5000 (or more, if the dog has very desirable bloodlines).

Shipping is usually around $ 250-300 US if shipping to and from locations are both inside the US.

Food & Water Bowls: $ 15 for both

Collar and leash: $ 15-20 for both (standard nylon collar & leash) I recommend Lupine brand for your day-to-day collar and leash because they are guaranteed; free replacements even if they are chewed up. Of course, if you are showing, you need the appropriate show leash in addition to your day-to-day equipment.

Grooming tools: Depends on the breed what tools you need.

Dog food – Depends on the size of the dog how much it eats. (Go with a quality food though, like one of these: Merrick, Solid Gold, Canidae, Timberwolf, Orijen, Wellness, Chicken Soup brand, Innova/EVO, etc..)

Toys – average $ 2-5 US each

Don’t forget to budget for vet bills, flea preventative, heartworm preventative, etc.. I recommend budgeting at around $ 750 for the first year. (If you are showing your dog, then you won’t be spaying/neutering it, so you can subtract that from the $ 750.)

Dog Grooming Tools question by Lissy: What is the best way to de-mat my dog with these tools?
I have a havanese that gets particularly whiney when I de-groom him, so I would like to make it as comfortable for him as possible. I bought de-tangler and a de-matting brush. I also have a steel comb, scissors and a regular brush.
What’s the best (and most comfortable) way to get these mats o out? Thanks!

Dog Grooming Tools best answer:

Answer by Fetch!
~ Have you ever tried a leave in dog conditioner?

It helps for dogs that have long hair that mats easily. Also, comb through it slowly while holding part of the hair at the top so you don’t pull the skin. I use a big soft plastic brush and then a little comb for little tangles on my Poodles. However, I keep them cut down so this is usually not a problem other than the ears. I would give the conditioner a try, and make sure you only try to brush when the hair is dry as wet hair tangles easier.
