Dog Grooming Supplies question by Angie: Should I bring a long haired dog camping, especially if she’ll get ticks?
We’re going camping somewhere in Northern California for 4 days.I’ve cut her hair to about an inch long and she uses Frontline Plus. She’s a small dog too. Will I be able to see the ticks better if her hair is short? Should I bring her shampoo and other grooming supplies with me?

Dog Grooming Supplies question by : Can you answer these dog grooming questions?
I want a German Shepherd Dog. I know they shed a lot and require a good brushing, but I have some questions.
1. How often do they need to be bathed? I already no it shouldn’t be more than once a month, unless they really need it.
2. What shampoo do I use? I know it should be oatmeal based, but are there any good brands to look for?
3. What supplies will I need? How can I learn how to use them?
On the first question, I meant to say “know”, not “no”.
Thank you so much, everyone! I appreciate all the great answers.
Answer by belindosrad1515 I’m an owner of two german shepards and yes they do shed A LOT usually during the summer. Mine go to a kennel where my sister works to get a bath maybe twice a month. I’m not sure what shampoos to recomend you, but I do use an oatmeal based shampoo for my minature yorkie and shitzu.

Dog Grooming Supplies question by Fur and Fiction: Dog grooming school or grooming training via Petco?
I am a grooming assistant at Petco, a corporation that I am not particularly fond of. I do, however, love my job.
I have been offered training to become a groomer through Petco’s mentor program. There is no cost to me, other than the cost of supplies. There is, however, a contract stating I need to work at Petco for a year following my training. I have never stayed at a job this long, so this intimidates me a bit, but I could see myself working there without any problem.
My issue is the type of experience I will be getting. I am not sure how well a Petco training program could possibly prepare me for the real world of grooming. The focus would be on common breeds, such as Shih Tzu’s and Yorkshire Terriers. Rarer breeds like Bedlington Terriers and Bearded Collie’s, will probably not be covered.
I also have the option of going to a grooming school. I am very privileged in that my parents are willing to pay for the grooming school. This would, however, be taking money out of my college fund, since I have opted to become a groomer before completing college.
I am not sure which here would be the better option for me. Has anyone been to grooming school or trained to groom at a Petco? I know technique will come in time- I just want good advice the first time around, rather than having to start over from scratch when I realize I have learned bad Petco habits. Face it: Petco groomers are not world class.
Answer by miaugh I think you answered your own question. The fact of the 1 year contract or non-compete clause may tie you down to a situation that you may find you don’t enjoy, then you’re stuck. I don’t have my dog groomed, but I have relatives who used Petco/Petsmart groomers once & will never go back. Talk to independent groomers with their own shops for some more insight from the other perspective. Good luck!
(add: not to “knock” good groomers–I’m sure there are some Petco stores with good ones. But I think a really good independent groomer with a loyal following, probably hasn’t gone to Petco groomer training.)

Dog Grooming Supplies question by Lucy : Grooming My Shih Tzu?
What are the groomers that you trust? I’ve had such bad experiences from PetSmart .. She had 3 mats that could easily be cut out, but they said that they REFUSED to cut them out — and she had to be shaved .. for an extra $ 50!
I was stupid and I let them do it. This was back in August ..
Do you know of any trustworthy nationwide dog grooming salons? I really want to give her a good groom.
I used to work at PetSmart, and I’ve been back in the groming salon. They treat the dogs terribly — and give them bad hack jobs!
She won’t let me touch her if I get out the grooming supplies. >_<
Here she is.
Thanks for the great answers, and compliments to my Shih Tzu!

Dog Grooming Supplies question by Julie A M: Want to do dog grooming,Does anyone have comments on online courses. They supply DVDs & books.Practice SPCA?
Answer by SusieQ I used to be a dog groomer. The best thing for you to do is to go to some groom shops and let the groomers know that you would like to be an apprentice groomer and learn how to groom. In all honesty, watching a DVD or reading a book isn’t going to teach you. It takes real live practice. Once you do learn, it would be awesome of you to get practice with the animals at the SPCA and make them look cute so they can get adopted. Best of luck!
