This book was a disappointment: was not about grooming your pet to a certain cut, or which parts to do first, blade differences for paws and ears, but more about how to get your dog into a tub or be brushed. Some nice tips on getting nasty things out of fur, but anything more than that, the book seems to recommend going to ask your local pet groomer to teach you. Not helpful for folks looking to undertake seriously grooming their pet. I did try the Everything Dog Grooming book, which was much more helpful.

This book is supposedly a reference for professional dog groomers. As one, I find it disappointing. The illustration quality is variable, and on one particular clip (the miniature schnauzer, I believe) there is a serious error in the clipping guidelines. Not enough angles of the dog pictures are shown for you to be able to discern the clipping pattern. Also, most dog groomers use modified forms of the show cuts on their customers’ dogs. This book fails to describe or even mention these alternative clipping styles, which I think are not only invaluable to dog groomers but to laypersons as well who choose to groom at home.

If you are looking for a step-by-step grooming procedure on different breeds of dogs, then this is a great book for you. The diagrams are helpful, and the directions are easy to follow. The problem I found with the book, is that it did not provide enough information about the clips. Personally, I want to know the reasons behind the different clipping styles, before I use them.

The author has more of a UK/European-centric view of things, meaning she focuses more on hand-stripping certain breeds than clipping them, as is more the custom in the US. That’s not a bad thing, as there isn’t enough info in US books about hand-stripping and her pattern illustrations are nice and can be adapted to clipping. The breed and step-by-step photos are beautiful. This actually would be a good book to keep in a grooming salon lobby for customers to see.
